A former Apple Tech explains what to do when your iPhone won’t charge. There are four main components to the charging process: your iPhone charger, Lightning cable, your iPhone’s Lightning port, and your iPhone’s software.

First, try performing a hard reset. This doesn’t always work, but it can occasionally fix the problem if your iPhone’s software crashed, causing it to appear like it wasn’t charging.
Next, we recommend trying multiple chargers and Lightning cables, inspecting each one for physical damage. If any one of the physical components in the charging process is broken or malfunctioning, then your iPhone won’t charge. Many times, the issue is caused by a cheap, “gas station” Lightning cable that’s not Apple MFi certified.
Also try cleaning out your iPhone’s Lightning port. If there’s any gunk, lint, or debris in the charging port, it can block your Lightning cable from making a clean connection to the Lightning port. We recommend using an anti-static brush, but if you don’t have one, a toothbrush will suffice.

Very useful and informative, but I would like to share my experience. My Iphone was charging, but the camera wouldn't be recognized by quicktime, keynote or OBS. I suspected it was software as their was no wear and tear on either of my apple bought cords and could be found in the finder. I did a reset of all settings in the settings of the iPhone and it did the trick! It was less involved than a DFU reset, but it worked! People trying it should be careful that they are only resetting the settings and and not erasing data, but it was only one click. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the tips I almost wasted a trip to the apple store. Been struggling with charging my iphone for months now and now its good as new. Did a reset then cleaned the port with a tooth pick. it actually can be more complicated than that when these instructions don't work and that you have to go to a repair shop and get someone to remove the dust through their own specific tool used for cleaning the inside of phone ports and then you have to wait it out. the serve is usually free in these cases.

Great video guys, but the only thing you didn't cover was the male end of the charging cord. I had one that got gunk on it and wouldn't charge. I bought a new one, had it a week and the same thing happened. I then noticed in my vehicle if it is not put into a cup holder or some other thing to hold it, it drops to the floor. I'm in the northeast, so during the winter water is on the floor. I now will get a charger that is the one you recommended. I'm just hoping its not a chemical reaction to the cheaper charger.

The main issue is that apple replaced the old charging/usb port wich was with iPhones up to iPhone 4 with a new port, which while compact is flawed and really not up to the job. If I ever decide to switch to android or windows phone, it will most likely be for reliable charging - not for the software or other hardware.

Hard reset worked! iPhone 5s. I plugged it in and held two buttons down. Great!

Thank you so much!!!!!! My old iPhone 5s is getting old and is giving me problems but other wise works fine I wasted 25 minuets trying different things and the hard reset fixed it lol but it works now thanks!

Michele Stone a hard reset was the last thin I did but I also took a q-tip with a plastic handle and cut it at an angle to fit in the charging port then I put isopropyl on the q tip and that fixed it
