ABOUT ME
I’m 32 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 850 breeding ewes.
I shore over 19,000 sheep this season in the UK and have my own shearing run which lets you see many different farms in the summer months.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on KZbin and decided I could have a go and now here we are!

That copper can be a real bugger! Been on both sides with being short and then over compensating and causing toxicity. It can get really expensive real fast. Just stick in there it always gets better. Great video as usual Cammy!

It was strange that the girls did not want to leave the trailer, usually they run out those girls were like yeah I may go or I may just stay. Hope the ones in lamb do wonderful for Windfold Farm.

Watching this after learning of a very recent article about UK's National Sheep Association, which reported that 70% of farmers have been abused and intimidated by dog walkers. Dog attacks are a constant nuisance where I am (the U.S., not the UK), on myself and others. And, where those sheep farms are in the UK, constant invasions are present to chase and harass the sheep, which in itself causes them injury. This needs attention right away.

Sounds like she needs some copper and feeders like Sandi to force a cycle to raise her numbers. Farmers depending on those lambs and so sad she lost her pup. That takes years to train. Hope and best wishes to a better future. Hugs

If you are having problems understanding what they are saying, do as I do and turn on closed captioning. It isn't perfect but it helps.

For some reason the majority of sheep farmers in North America think that sheep should have no copper! There are a few who realize that some copper is needed but only in tiny amounts. What is the consensus there about what amount sheep can handle and is it breed dependent? Thanks Cammy!

In New Zealand we have to be careful with Texel sheep and copper. The mineral licks suitable for sheep here will have do not give to Texel sheep on them.

I'm new to sheep but from north America. Where I'm from we do have to be careful with copper, I personally use pink salt mineral lick it has trace amounts of copper and so far has been ok.

It depends on the copper levels of the soil the feed is grown in or their grazing is going in. The soil and feed needs to be tested to find out. Some areas are copper deficient others may have excess of copper.

Mary, a Sandy Brock fan too! Yah! Sandy's sheep breed is good for multiples and her goal is for twins plus. What Cam was saying is 'that WindFold breed' --sorry I can't remember the name of it--hardly ever has more than two so triplets is very rare. They were unique looking though. This farm seemed to have an eclectic assortment, but I still can't tell, but they were nothing like Sandy's flock breeds. Cam has scanned multiples elsewhere and he has mentioned he would love to visit Sandy someday. Maybe when he gets to 1M subscribers!

Sandi's had 2 different ewes drop 6 lambs each. Normally, 4 or 5 is the max.

​@@jofarwell9744, Sandi has a mixed-breed flock, both rams & ewes. Some Tunis, some Rideau, some Suffolk, etc. The lambs all get a selenium injection right after birth. (The soil is low in selenium, which makes for low-selenium feed.)

Suffolk, Texel, and Charollais are the breeds most susceptible to copper poisoning. This is due to there being enough already in the ground they are grazing on, supplements would therefore lead to overdose.
