You've got to have the gift and he had it, I remember seeing him play a kidnapper in an episode of the bill in the 90s long before he got dr who and he was so chilling that I remembered his face and knew exactly who he was once he got the doctor. He was and is good at playing mentally deranged characters, this was his first.

Um he is Scottish, that wasn't putting on any accent that's how he naturally used to talk before fame toned it down somewhat. This tv show was a Scottish series starring another well known Scottish actor Ken Stott (the old dwarf in the hobbit) about a guy (Stott) going to work as a radio DJ in a lunatic asylum of which Tennant was one of the patients.

I watched this series when it first aired and thought it was brilliant - and David Tennant was brilliant in it. I had to wait a very long time to see it again - when he became The Doctor - and it had lost nothing in the intervening years. The man is pure gold. As the Doctor he was lovely, as Denis Neilsen he was utterly terrifying, but he makes every role his own. Love him to bits.

Do it in private, film yourself and rewatch it. When you watch it, imagine you're watching someone else and not yourself. It helps with the cringe because you can dissociate it from yourself, and you can critique it more objectively. Then find mistakes, run it again, rinse and repeat
