i would recommend that you put a big washer under the head of the bolt. it applies pressure on plastic, and is a good idea to distribute the pressure on larger surface.

Fantastic! An elegant solution to a frustrating, perplexing problem. I used your bolt solution on my 2014 Tacoma. I live in Phoenix, so my only variant was to avoid using tape, as it would only melt and fall apart in the desert heat. Instead, I drilled three holes along the edge of the plastic clamshell and used zip ties to hold it together. I positioned the zip tie connection on the closed side of the visor so you don’t see the little bumps in the fabric most of the time. I then sewed the fabric back in place. It looks like Dr Frankenstein did the repair, but it’s not bad. Thank you for posting a very helpful video

Could you explain in a bit of detail how this was possible? Did you put the washer and nut on the outside of the visor? Does the visor still close flush to the roof? Thanks for the video. I followed your instructions and it worked great for me. I haven't yet tried to use the visors a lot, but they flip up and down like they should. The one difference in my approach is that I decided to completely remove the foam/cloth covers. If it turns out the halves don't want to hold together on their own, a bit of duct tape should fix that. The foam covers themselves are only aesthetic and I don't mind the exposed black plastic. So what, as long as the visors work. Thanks again!
@TSGEnt11 ай бұрын
You are so welcome. Glad it's working for you. I have thought about just using some scrap material and sewing a "sock" like cover to slip over the visor. But black plastic isn't a problem either. Best to you.
@DragonsTaco5 жыл бұрын
Thumbs up. I tried a similar fix using a bolt through the entire visor. Looks like yours is a better solution since it isn't dependent upon any of the plastic. I've been sporting an old junk 4-Runner visor, but may have to try this fix again since the 4-Runner isn't an exact match and is missing the slider. BTW, should you have to try to wrap it again, the bezel around the mirror pops off so that you don't have to tuck the fabric. Oh, and don't bother with the hot-glue. I found even the "high temp" stuff gets soft and useless in the truck. (although mine is black)
@TSGEnt5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have hot glue experience in your vehicle. ;) The only plastic to worry about is the body of the visor. Great tip about the bezel. I pulled on it but was afraid to break it off. When it's time to repair the passenger side visor, I'll give it a try.

Thanks, worked for me on a 2013 Mazda CX-9, very similar. I cut the seam of the fabric with an X-acto and used super glue to close the seam when finished. Like another person I too removed the trim for the mirror to make it a lot easier to reseat the fabric. All works except that the mirror light does not work, I think I forced the contacts out of place and I should have tested it before gluing the fabric but it's all out back together. Happy to have a working visor but this did take me about 1.5hrs so in reality it would have been cheaper in relative terms to buy the OEM part :) but always fun to fix things.
@TSGEnt3 жыл бұрын
glad it worked out for you! Well, all but the light. You can always take it apart and troubleshoot it.
@jamesnobles1Күн бұрын
I just removed the cheap plastic bracket, drilled a hole thru the metal inner piece attached to the flip bracket, to the outside of the foam & laminating plastic pocket on the opposite side. Then I attached a flat washer with no sharp edges and used a pop rivet gun to secure both the flat washer and inner metal piece together. No need to worry about a screw loosening over time and it will last longer than my car will now. If rivets are good enough for airplanes, I’m good with them. Then you can turn the fabric inside out to sew seams on all sides but the top, slide in the repaired visor and attach some double sided tape to hold fabric in place while using fabric glue , the repair is permanent)to finish the top seam. Then snap the mirror plastic border in place with fabric edges neatly under it and viola…looks like factory but WAY stronger. No need to worry about sun melting plastic bracket with a new visor which will happen…I replaced a few years back with same problem. I gave the fabric a good scrubbing with dawn and a magic eraser…it worked better than upholstery fabric cleaner or stream (if used correct fabric glue) since hand oils are best removed with a degreaser. Then screwed back into car headliner…snaps wonderfully & is tight fitting. I’ll wait for my other to break then will do the same to that side for my 2005 Scion tC made by Toyota. The repair was well worth my time since I’ll never have to repair them again and replacements are not always easy to find for older model cars. So its the price of one pop rivet, one flat washer, some thread, double sided tape (not the foam kind) & fabric glue. I had just finished washing dishes so the dawn and magic eraser were borrowed and then returned to the kitchen. Total cost was under $2.00 to repair and is a permanent fix for a broken plastic inner securing bracket. Oh and for anybody thinking about plastic welding the bracket in to sandwich the metal piece…it wont hold. I fused that bracket plastic so well but because its so thin, it will snap in other places after being degraded from uv exposure. The plastic melts fine in fusing but forms cracks everywhere as it cools and hardens. Each crack is just another break about to happen. Go with pinching the metal piece to a nice flat washer and burn the plastic bracket since recycling is useless.

Do this work on Auris?
@TSGEnt2 ай бұрын
I have not tried on one. There are only a couple of makers of the visor. They share the same visor across different models.

My sun visors is broken off from the metal strap its attached to. Where can I take it for repair? Thank you!
@TSGEnt4 жыл бұрын
The metal strap in the visor itself? I'm pretty sure Toyota would be happy to take all your money, but if you have an auto wrecking yard, you might find a preplacement there. Good luck to you.

Will it work on 2002 toyota hightlander
@TSGEnt3 жыл бұрын
I don't have a 2002 Highlander so can't verify for sure, but I'm reasonably confident that the sun visor concept, where sizes may vary, is the same across the board. And judging by the fact you as a 2002 HL owner is asking, the problem is the same, so the fix should be similar.

Damn, I just spent $90 AU ordering a new visor on EBay for my Toyota Prado.

Well, no problem. Sometimes you just gotta get the job done. Now when the other one goes out, you can try this repair. Just save this video to a playlist and rewatch it when you need it. Best to you.

It works... but I can't suffer the taped upholstery. $100 for a new visor oem is not hateful.
@TSGEnt3 жыл бұрын
I hear ya. Since this repair, others have used super glue or stitch witchery to bond the fabric together. I've been told they work well. I've added those to the store- amzn.to/34EeBYq. I have found and OEM part for less than $100! amzn.to/3jlG2i1 Price came down so you might what to check that out.

Have the same issue with a Landcruiser Prado. Don’t understand how Toyota have a reputation for reliability. Reliability extends to all parts, not just the motor running. Some of their components must be so old in the design. There are reports of this thing failing from 20 years ago and still no change. Toyota are crap and living off past glories.

Honda and Toyota quality is going way down from the day theirs cars made in Canada & USA
@TSGEnt5 күн бұрын
I agree. It seems consumers are all beta testers for everything. I still believe Honda and Toyota they are a cut above the rest of the competition though.

we had a mercedes from 1983. The visor never broke. 40 years and nothing. that is the problem with these garbage cars being made now. they are made to break. oh and they charge 200 bucks for this garbage.
