For the level 'Mystery of the Monkey Cage' you go up to the very top of the mountain. Theses a monkey up there. The monkey you were grabbing is the one that steals Mario's hat.

The monkey disappears because Mario isn't nearby him. If Mario is far enough away, it teleports the monkey back to its starting position. Mario's player state can't be on Luigi as well, or it'll confuse the game. The hack adds a Luigi model but it can't make Luigi act as Mario unless Mario is dead or nonexistant.

Alright I've got a theory the game does not use Luigi's position for anything including enemy's tracking or item HOLP which is basically where Mario is holding an item (however Luigi did successfully drop the monkey)
