Title: PBIS: Creating Positive School Culture and Improving Student Outcomes
Description:
Join veteran educator Julie and lifelong learner Amber as they dive into the world of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). This video explores how PBIS can transform school environments, improve student behavior, and boost academic performance.
In this comprehensive guide, you'll learn:
What is PBIS? PBIS is a multi-tiered framework for creating effective school environments. It establishes a social culture and behavioral support to improve social, emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes for all students. It is a system that is locally meaningful and culturally relevant.
Why PBIS Matters? PBIS is an approach that helps to improve academic performance, reduce bullying, improve social-emotional competence, and decrease rates of drug and alcohol abuse. It also leads to improved teacher outcomes.
The Core Principles of PBIS: PBIS uses a systems approach and is data-driven, using data to monitor effective implementation. It is based on empirically-supported practices. The goal is to create structure so that learning can take place.
Tiered Support System: PBIS uses a tiered approach. Tier 1 is universal, Tier 2 is targeted, and Tier 3 is intensive and individualized.
Tier 1 (Universal): Supports delivered to all students, emphasizing prosocial skills and behavior expectations. It builds a social culture where students expect, prompt, and reinforce appropriate behavior. Tier 1 should meet the needs of 80% or more of all students. Rewards should be varied and meaningful.
Tier 2 (Targeted): Support for students not successful with Tier 1 alone. It provides additional teaching and practice opportunities. Interventions should be similar across students and can be quickly accessed. Schools monitor fidelity and outcome data to adjust implementation.
Tier 3 (Intensive, Individualized): More intensive and individualized supports, using formal assessments to match interventions to the behavior's function. It creates individualized plans incorporating a student's strengths, deficits, and needs. It often includes wrap-around services.
Classroom Management Strategies:
Use consistent procedures and routines to reinforce expectations.
Recognize student behaviors and provide positive reinforcement.
Employ strategies like clip charts, Class Dojo points, fun Friday rewards, and positive notes home.
Use praise and positive reinforcement. A good rule of thumb is the "2 to 1 rule" - give two positive reinforcements before redirecting a behavior.
Use tools like Padlet, Class DoJo, and Minga Cart for interactive learning.
Utilize a classroom store with a variety of items that motivate students.
School-Wide Initiatives:
PBIS teams that include diverse teachers and staff meet regularly and monitor data.
Monthly meetings, student of the month awards, quarterly celebrations, and PBIS stores.
Involve PTO and community members.
Align PBIS initiatives with discipline data. Rebrand discipline to focus on climate and culture.
Ensure consistency of messaging and incentives.
Consider mobile school stores that pop up to reinforce behavior.
Create fun, engaging events that meet the needs of diverse students.
Use digital tools to meet students where they are.
The Importance of Consistency: Consistency is key to PBIS. Consistency ensures that students hear, see, and feel the reinforcement.
Cost-Effective and Inclusive: PBIS costs nothing to implement, it benefits all students, satisfies tiered instruction, and reinforces school-wide expectations.
This video will give you practical tips and strategies to implement PBIS in your classroom and school. You don't have to do it our way, do it your way!
