This video is so powerful on so many levels. I think it's amazing to see kids have so much love for their culture that getting a reprimand and talk about their heritage from their teacher made them cry. The parents and teachers there are doing something right.

Mahūs aren't necessary for Hawaiian culture, as much as they want you to believe it. Also, the little girl in the video supposedly turned away from the Mahū traditions for Jesus Christ. So I guess it would make an interesting episode now that this is the case.

Since I watched KumuHina's beautiful documentary about her own life as Mahu, in which Ho'onani was featured, I have developed a tremendous respect for those who are not experiencing shame at being Mahu, but embrace it. My mainland home was filled with Hawaiian musicians as I was growing up and some of them were Mahu. My mother was a Hawaiian dancer, having been trained by Hawn. Roustabouts during her time with A.G. Barnes circus. They performed in Hotel Showrooms in large cities. My mom also had a lot of Mahu friends who were not Hawaiian. Ho'onani is remarkable & comes from a remarkable family.
