An outstanding story told through outstanding photography with equally outstanding narration. Although sadness at a mother’s loss of life and the uncertainty of her offspring, it was well told comparing one Cheetah family with another. Despite the loss of life, I was still surprised to see so many cubs survive and the cheetah that brought five cubs to adolescence was astonishing given the many dangers for such a small cat. I enjoyed this episode very much from beginning to the very end. There are a lot of bad things for them out there and their instinct to stay out of the way and live on the edge must be nerve wracking. To bring up your offspring to adolescence only to come into estrous again can't be much fun for a mother. What a terrible way to live. Thank you, PBS, for this often sad but overall successful story, I found most watchable and enjoyable.

I wouldn't want to be a CHEETAH .. You'd have Prides of lions after you and your cubs You'd have Packs of wild dogs or Clans of hyenas always near, to Steal your hard work You'd have large committees of Vultures to take your food A bask of Crocodiles waiting for a Cheetah to drink at the water front Solo Leopards will fight and steal their food. Cheetahs have to stick to an open hunting ground....away from obstacles that can trip them up , while in full speed. Dealing and competing against other Cheetahs, encroaching on their hunting grounds. Being Poached by humans...for their coats. Dealing with the lack of food , during Dry season in hunting grounds. Having many days of hunger, due to the large herds of Buffalo protecting their younge or getting injured in a hunt. Living on small rabbits , and other small game, is the staple food source. No wonder, their population numbers are on the DEcline. Big Respect to the CHEETAH survival skills. 😎👍💯🌟🌟🌟🌟

It's kind of sad that these animals have to work so hard just to keep their young alive let alone feed them. It isn't just a problem for cheetahs! All wildcats and every other wild animal has the same problem. Cats, bears, elephants, antelope, hyena, etc. etc. It's a part of life in the wild. I always wondered what they think or feel when they lose one of their young, and it isn't a one time thing either! They have babies multiple times in life and more than likely lose at least one baby each time. The mama with 5 cubs is amazing! She did a wonderful job.

Very surprised that the cheetah didn’t give up the hunt versus that large-sized gazelle. Her experience should have told her that the target was too large and too vital. Also, it was disappointing to see that only one of her three adolescent cubs really tried to assist. Survival of the fittest, in action. In the postmortem scene, I can’t help but wonder if the surviving cheetah realizes the deceased is a relative - perhaps a daughter, sister, or aunt.

"whether she can recognise if this is one of her own is not known." Do not underestimate big cats' intelligence!! Of course she knew! Just look at her body language! Haven't we seen/know enough to be convinced that those big cats are intelligent, empathetic beings?? Humans, as one kind of animal, always underestimate other animals, seeing them as lesser than. This erroneous assumption causes too much misery for other animals!! That poor cheetah mum... 💔 What happened to her cubs...? 💔

They are not intelligent, empathetic beings. Jeez. I am so sick of this excessive anthropomorphism. They are totally different. They sense, they have instinct, and that's all. They have just enough skill and knowledge to do what they do and that's it.

@@nonenoneonenonenone wrong..
@iMusikkForeva2 жыл бұрын
@@nonenoneonenonenone I understand that animals are subject to anthropomorphism on the daily but concluding that they are not intelligent, empathetic beings is also rather naive. This is because according to science we still do not KNOW whether they are indeed capable of more than we can visibly give them credit for. Sure, these are adjectives to describe humans, but how can we for sure know what goes on in the mind of cheetahs? How can we know whether or not they feel "emotion" in a way that we may perceive the word? We don't. So when someone believes that the cheetah recognized the other cheetah and you think that they didn't, you are both basing it on your perception of the animal's capabilities. No one is right or wrong, we are all just curious beings who are searching for an answer.
@jennhale3171 Жыл бұрын
@@nonenoneonenonenone actually you are wrong, they are empathetic creatures. You can see it in this documentary as the mothers care for their young and the mother who lost her baby was clearly upset about it. Even the sibling was empathetic over the loss. Just because they can’t stick around and mourn like humans do doesn’t mean they don’t have the capability of empathy.
@caterscarrots3407 Жыл бұрын
