Wow! The music, at least before the game starts, sounds better then the arcade cab! So does the digitized speech.
@yohkom.79887 жыл бұрын
lol and, "wow", once in-game you deal with hucard music and some laughable sound effects. Actually a lot of PC Engine CD games have bad sound effects which drag down the whole experience, especially some shooters such as Sapphire or Hellfire.

There are more to graphics than colors on screen. Plus on a very technical level the TG-16 had limits in how those colors were applied compared to the MD/Genesis. The MD/Genesis simply had more overall power. All you need do is play the games from each platform and it becomes apparent quickly. The PC Engine simply looks more "flat" compared to the Genesis, and I don't know if it's lack of ram or CPU...but the levels do not contain as much graphic data or complexity either.

PC engine games did not support more than one background layer or any sort of parallax scrolling without some programming tricks, which is why they appear flatter. With that said, this version features scaling effects and animations more closely resembling the arcade than even the Genesis version. It's a mixed bag. Look at World Heroes 2 or Art of Fighting for the PC Engine and compare those to the Genesis versions.
@imapisces16 жыл бұрын
tightlypackedcoil It had multiple scrolling backgrounds on many games, just not this one.

Gotta say, after watching this side by side with your Mega Drive play through, I gotta give my nod to the MD/Genesis version. While the sound wasn't as good, and the stages were much much shorter, I actually liked the character design better, the transformation close ups were done better, and it had more enemies. I notice the PCE version was missing the unicorns and the rhino type things on the last stage. And I like the ability to punch and hit the credits at the end too. That was a nice touch in the MD/Genesis version as well. Cool to see them side by side though.
@yohkom.79887 жыл бұрын
I prefer the sound on Mega Drive. This PC Engine CD version still has the same music as the the regular PC Engine (Hucard) version which is lame and the sound effects are weak. The only improvement is the added voices which were lacking with the Hucard version.
@CapeWearingSchmuck7 жыл бұрын
Not quite correct. The CD version does have enhanced sound effects, beyond the just the voices.
@yohkom.79887 жыл бұрын
Enhanced?! They sound terrible, the hit sound effects are weak and the sound when enemies die is laughable ("piouu"). Beside the PC Engine CD version lacks co-op play. Also I noticed that both PC Engine Hucard and CD versions lack two kinds of enemies: the flying imp at stage 4 and the sort of human boar at stage 5. And since PC Engine controller has limited amount of action buttons now you have to press up for jump, not as handy, especially since these versions have stiff controls, the Hucard version in particular which is painful to play. The Mega Drive port is not perfect either but overall is a more enjoyable experience and it's quite revealing since it was a very early release, only one month after the system launch, while both PC Engine versions were released more than two years after the system launch and one with CD support and despite all this none of them top the Mega Drive version! So imagine if Sega had released the Mega Drive port a bit later, with more development time and bigger cart size? The gap would have been even larger... But Sega needed a flagship title for their new console and Altered Beast was quite a nice choice at the time.

Makes me glad I grew up on the Genesis and the Arcade versions. This was horrible. The only thing it has going for it is their semi ported graphics. Even then it still manages to mess that up as well. They just felt like they slept through the transformations which was one of the best things about this game at the time. The entire transformation of the wolf was missing like they phoned it in. The game feels like a cheap subpar port of the genesis version. Sure the genesis scaled down the graphics but they tried as hard as they good to keep everything as close to the arcade as possible given their limitations with the console.

What's this? You say you had to buy a CD just to see the intro?! I mean, the intro is awesome and very well produced, I liked it a lot, but in the actual game the sounds come from the PC Engine's internal sound chip! Why would someone spend an extra buck just to see an intro while expecting new CD quality sounds just to be disappointed by getting the exact same HuCard version instead? By the way, I've always wondered, how is it that the arcade ending never made it to any of the home ports...

The Sega Genesis(/Mega Drive) was not the kind of success in Japan that it was in the US and Europe -- although people in the west associate Sega with a brief period of great success in the early 90's, it was paired with dismal Japanese sales and overly-expensive western ads. Sega was never really wealthy enough to do what they did (which is why I respect them so much), but here they're desperately cannibalizing their first-party market to make some dough prior to their western console success.
