Just got mine in the mail today. What a cool little console. I think I like it a little better than the NES or SNES classic. I love the UI. So freaking cool with the Hu card and CD animation. It's much more satisfying than I could have ever imagined. The game selection is pretty damn good too, with only a handful of games that weren't included that should have been. Absolutely love the controller. It's the first time I've ever held a PC-Engine controller and I love it just as much as I always thought I would. The d-pad is excellent and rolls really nice.

They touched on this in their Genesis mini overview, but they said don't be too set on hacking these things. They've found that the emulator inside them is really optimized to run those specific games that it comes with and adding other titles can cause problems in the games you add like lag, audio issues, and more.

The issues that some of these 'mini' revival systems suffer from really mystifies me. I feel like in some cases emulators from almost 25 years ago running on 200mhz single core Pentiums work with less audio lag than these brand new systems. I'm not here to trash M2 or anything, I just don't understand why at this point, in this day and age, these games that can be emulated on extremely modest hardware aren't completely perfect.
@Fattydeposit
@Fattydeposit 4 жыл бұрын
It's called capitalism. M2 were tasked to build the software for a cheap $100 novelty toy and presumably they did everything possible within their time constraints and budget. Konami could feasibly have settled on the system sporting beefier specs than something less powerful than a Raspberry Pi 2 - but obviously this wouldn't have been anywhere near as commercially viable / profitable.
@Jucelegario
@Jucelegario 4 жыл бұрын
Because they want to sell you revised versions of them. Like a 4K one with a couple of extra games and so on (now you can do this, you can do that). Also, I think M2 is overwhelmed with everyone telling them to do their emulation compilation of retro games, not only for mini consoles, but for pc, current gen consoles, ps5 and xbox series x.
@jenniferlynn3579
@jenniferlynn3579 4 жыл бұрын
Modest hardware and "completely perfect" are miles away from eachother. To this day, you can play very nearly completely perfect accuracy SNES games using Higan/BSNES but you need much more than "modest" hardware. And i get that maybe your wording was inaccurate to what your actual point was, but even then, the reason the pc-engine mini doesnt have better sound, display options, and accuracy/compatability is due to the cost of diminishing returns. The better they fine tuned the system the more time and money sunk into R&D, and since they are on a deadline from Konami, (definitely not a company you want to be on the bad side of) there's a cut-off point where it becomes "good enough" and must be shipped before you start losing money on the venture. Nintendo, on the other hand, is a toy and game company. They have tons of experience with this kind of thing, and are willing to put a lot of effort into delivering the best presentation of their brand. The NES classic was on-par or better than most higher end mini consoles to date, but still suffered the usual complaints, so they went back and improved up the existing hardware as much as possible rather than creating something completely new or different, and thats how we got the SNES classic. The pinnacle of mini consoles. With input latency so low it is actually faster than dedicated Windows, Linux, and Pi emulation machines. Outstanding.
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming 4 жыл бұрын
I feel like you're letting the developers off the hook, here. I didn't misspeak when I said 'modest hardware,' I was referring to old single core, pentium computers from over 25 years ago and how well emulators for older systems like the PCE ran in those early days . A lot of emulators back then, including for systems like the PC Engine and Genesis ran with less sound lag issues than we see on these mini systems being released literally decades later. The mini systems are using hardware that is way more powerful than those old computers, despite having a different architecture (x86 vs ARM). I don't think anyone can make a compelling argument to say that a 1ghz ARM system isn't sufficiently powerful to emulate the PC Engine in particular without sound lag. Therefore the problem lies entirely with the developers of the software. Yes, they may have budgets and time constraints, but M2 has been at this for a long time now so it just seems they think their flawed end product is just fine. I respect your thoughtful reply and appreciate the time you put into it. If you're talking cycle accurate emulation for older systems with unique hardware like the SNES, then yes I agree with you that you need significantly powerful hardware. But just to run games at full speed, with no perceptible issues and without sound lag for even almost all of the SNES library, you don't need cycle accurate emulation. I'll conclude by saying M2 does a lot of interesting work and I like a lot of what they do... the Sega Ages games they've put out and updated on Nintendo platforms have generally been really good. I just don't get why they can't seem to solve the somewhat severe audio lag on the mini consoles they've worked on.
@Jucelegario
@Jucelegario 4 жыл бұрын
@@jenniferlynn3579 They can give us perfect emulation on a more than modest hardware (specially the likes of Nintendo and Konami) and they will still make a profit, albeit not maximizing earnings like all companies mantra these days. I feel like if this mini consoles were released 30 years ago, we would have 101 perfect quality products because I imagine today, their Twitter market research department told them that most of the public feels "good enough emulation" is what they want. These days, we pay the price of normiedom, whether it is with this or with the spreading of the bug.

Pretty disappointing that they still couldn't rectify the sound and input lag issues that were also there on the Genesis Mini. The NES Classic unfortunately has sound lag as well, but it seems like Nintendo figured things out for the SNES Classic. Between the minimal input lag and sound lag, as well as the better-looking 4:3 mode, I'd say the SNES Classic still stands as the gold standard for these mini consoles. I've also been a bit disappointed in M2 recently - it doesn't feel like they're living up to their reputation. I'm not sure if they've even fixed the broken Castlevania revision in Castlevania Anniversary Collection, for example. I honestly don't understand it, because the hardware between all of these systems (NES, Genesis, SNES, PC Engine) are pretty much identical. There shouldn't be a power issue here.

Emulation is the way to go. I have ever so slightly reduced lag (by a frame or two at most) using a Linux computer rather than Windows, but anything outputting over HDMI to an HDTV will have lag. I have an old VGA to component converter I used to use to connect my laptop to my CRT in college (mostly for movies) that might cut lag significantly, but none of my current computers has a VGA port. I do most of my 8 and 16 bit gaming on a Japanese Retro Freak clone console. It's about as high end as they get. Still some lag, but nothing you'd notice unless you're speed running or playing Street Fighter at a high level or something like that. Some minor sound emulation issues with Genesis games, but nothing deal breaking.

There definitely is a frame or two, but after watching this video I checked out Lords of Thunder again and it played just fine. I had no trouble with it. Maybe my TV and its game mode can compensate enough where it isn't a problem for me. In regards to the turbo buttons, I can't tell if they're actually doing anything. No matter which setting or game I have them on, the button seems to always do the same thing. I may be mistaken but I think the 3-5 frames of lag is just from being on an HDTV and is unavoidable. It does suck they didn't trim the lag that the games themselves inherently have though, but that's probably a ton of work since it's all on a game-by-game basis.

Hello, I was the one who was doing the lag tests. The lag is not from being tube vs lcd; there's only 1/2 frame to 1 frame of difference there and I was taking into that account. Even against the Ootake emulator which is 2 frames behind real hardware, the Mini was 2-3 frames behind the emulator, as seen in the second example shown. Lords of Thunder has 3-4 frames of built-in input lag on an actual system and Space Harrier has 4-5 frames!

The reason Sega/M2 released the Genesis/Megadrive Mini with a 3-button controller in the west because they sold off the design to the western 6-button controller years ago. The Japanese 6-button arcade pad had a different design.

I appreciate the point you made here. While I can appreciate that a system like this has faults, the price difference between this mini console and what it would cost to play all those games on original hardware (with a modern TV, properly up-scaled) is something that should be considered here. It's not feasible for many people to legally play these games 'the right way.'

I enjoy it for what it's worth. I am selling my PC Engine Mini because my TG16 mini comes in from Japan today. I own an original tg16 and play on a CRT and PVM and of course that is the better way to play but the mini's do a decent job if you are a fan of the systems and just want to get quick fix on a flat panel tv without all the $ on scalers for original hardware.

And I'm curious why, on my Raspberry Pi running Retropie I've never noticed this with ANY Turbografx-16 games, and I have the screen size the same. Anyone understand this? *Edit* I believe it's due to Interpolation? Maybe these settings can be added in with a Hack/mod?

Why is it that every single scanline filter you see made the whole image dull, looks nothing like a decent crt
@awake4ages
@awake4ages 4 жыл бұрын
It's because as Coury mentioned they're not including any gamma boost, even optionally. When you overlay a lot of dark lines over an image it's only natural it's going to look darker. I don't understand why so many of them don't boost the gamma to compensate for that. Like you said, the image looks basically nothing like a good CRT because of this and I find that disappointing because I'm a huge fan of scanlines myself.
@DenkyManner
@DenkyManner 4 жыл бұрын
Has been the same with emulators for decades. The people who make emulators don't seem to be very aware of what scaliness are or what they look like. Most of the image options that include are all wrong, look objectively ugly and nothing like the real hardware they purport to replicate. It's very strange
@Lightblue2222
@Lightblue2222 4 жыл бұрын
@@DenkyManner they emulate the system well, not the old TV it use to run on. Scanlines aren't actually a part of the games. And on a real CRT I barely actually notice the scanlines.

Thing is, the scanline options on the Analogue FPGA consoles allow for gamma boost and they work really well, making everything customisable. So yeah - why can't every system that has a "filter option" do the same?

I love all these mini consoles especially when once you hack them and put pretty much what you want on there. It's much more convienient than paying over the odds for these old consoles and games which sometimes don't work and most of the time look bad on a modern TV becuase most of us don't have nor have the room for CRTs anymore.

As much as I enjoy learning about the tech behind video games and the hardware side, I'm glad I'm not so tech savvy that I let it ruin my enjoyment of my retro consoles. I still haven't bought any of these mini systems but I have several of the original consoles. I just need a decent CRT tv to play the older ones on and use the light guns. I have been able to play so many arcade and console games through emulation that seems like it's perfect to me.

So I have a couple of questions about these mini consoles...if they output 720p, wouldn't they have really bad input lag because it's being upscaled twice? And secondly, how do these mini systems compare in lag and overall image quality to the Pound Technology/Hyperkin/Level Pike etc adapters?
@mylifeingaming
@mylifeingaming 4 жыл бұрын
[Try4ce] Oh they look WAY better than those HDMI cables. They are very improperly designed. The internal scale shouldn't add any lag, but the emulation itself does. In my experience, 720p doesn't add much/any lag on most 1080p or 4K TVs I've tested. Most progressive resolutions don't. The bigger issue is 480i, or 240p, because 240p is often treated as 480i.

There is almost no information anywhere online about whether we can avoid buying the expansive extra controllers (update: 1 video) and the multitap sold by konami on amazon japan. In other words, will generic usb hub and or 3rd party wired usb controllers work with these 3 minis (PCE or TG16 or CG)? On my TG16 mini, I tried 3 different wired USB controllers (sega genesis mini 6 button and 3 button controllers and playstation classic controller) and they did NOT work. I also tried a targus 4 port usb 2.0 hub with the TG16 mini controller and it also didn't work. It seems konami/hori has done this to force purchase of their expensive peripherals, but it would be helpful to know if some other 3rd party personals (wired, not wireless) would work before ordering expensive peripherals from Konami on amazon Japan. Please try out any peripherals you have and post here or anywhere online and or provide links here to any information on this. I can't believe the units have been reviewed by many and yet nobody has mentioned anything about this. It would be a video that would get lots of views ;) The one video (3 days ago) which tests 4 other controllers is helpful but the hori controller that does work is actually more expensive than buying the Konami pc engine mini controller from amazon Japan, after duty/shipping costs, the difference in price is very little so would prefer to get the pc engine controller. Would be helpful if more other usb controllers were tested. And, we need people testing usb hubs and sharing results please.

The "ownership" of the PC Engine I find a bit intriguing. I guess people who actually had the real hardware back in the day consider it a part of NEC's computer line. I admit to being younger so my main introduction to it was through the Wii Virtual Console, and that was back when Hudson Soft was still around. I've been under the impression that Hudson Soft designed the console and held the rights but it was manufactured and marketed by NEC?
@rickylovesyou
@rickylovesyou 4 жыл бұрын
The TurboGrafx-16 or PC Engine was a collaborative effort between Hudson Soft, who created video game software, and NEC, a company which was dominant in the Japanese personal computer market with their PC-88 and PC-98 platforms. NEC lacked the vital experience in the video gaming industry so approached numerous video game studios for support. By pure coincidence, NEC's interest in entering the lucrative video game market coincided with Hudson's failed attempt to sell designs for then-advanced graphics chips to Nintendo. The two companies successfully joined together to then develop the new system. -wikipedia As for "ownership", that would be NEC. Hudsonsoft would however be classified as a first party developer back in those days.
