This post will be a doozy but i will try and sum up a lot of important things that i have learned playing it for the first time recently for anyone who is brand new to frontier who is first experiencing it now. First and foremost make sure to follow the hunter navi which will get you started with the game and start to do key quests (marked with yellow diamond) at the regular quest counter. Once you reach HR5 you unlock the heaven and storm hunting styles which have alternate move sets and after the supremacy monsters in hr6 it skips you to hr7 without an urgent quest and then you can go to the G quest counter to repel shantien and enter G rank and unlock all of the g rank quests from her counter (This also uncaps your hr, which i guess is called GR in this game). From there you can unlock the extreme style (the best hunting style all around since it combines them all and adds the extreme run for more mobility when double tapping your movement stick in a direction and also extreme style exclusive moves) tonfas, magnet spike (by following grahams questline in the rasta bar for which there is a guide on) and unlock the G rank navi tutorials which should be followed as well. pretty much almost everything else in the game can be fought by G rank since there is no more keys afterwards except for stuff restricted to GR100 but for the final monsters that were added late into the games life the zenith monsters you need to get up to GR200 in order to experience them in their earliest difficulty. Make sure after reaching a few higher hunter ranks to recruit a rasta npc partner in the rasta bar after talking with the registration counter (the guy on the right i think) after you are able in a few ranks, the hunting horn rasta is amazing pretty op to have with you. You can have a rasta introduce you to a partner npc as well which you can character customize and give gear to (but you cant get back what you give to them it goes into their exclusive partner equip box for them only after that) and you can have them use all kinda different weapons and help out alongside the rasta and your palico when you are solo. Rastas and partners and palicos also carve extra items you get at the rewards page as well in the 4th tab so they are worth bringing along for the extra rewards. Aside from the good armor that the g rank navi helps you make there is also what is known as Goushu armor sets (can craft starting in HR 5), these are powerful gear sets from an assortment of monsters but most notably the burst and origin species monsters (Zerureusu, Meraginasu, Varusaburosu, Garuba Daora, and Diorekkusu for burst and Voljang, Toa Tesukatora, Yama Kurai, and Gureadomosu for origin) which can be somewhat of a grind to level but become extremely powerful when you put the time in especially if you level the burst and origin species goushu armors because they all have extremely powerful effects in their own right be sure to look up the unique skill effect to find the one you think is right for you before grinding it out because its a long process. Goushu weapons and armor have 6 stages or tiers i guess you can call them which you can check in the red text on the item descriptions. the armor sets have 7 levels of upgrades to get through on each piece of gear in order to rise to the next tier of equipment starting with base goushu , then Tenran (Heavenly storm) , then supremacy , then G supremacy , then Burst , then Origin , with the defence and skill points and slots all increasing drastically to match other highly upgraded gear. Up to first supremacy tier is all low rank and high rank stuff (and supremacy hr 6) you need to grind but starting from G supremacy onwards it starts to become g rank materials along with the supremacy materials. Then in burst and origin tier you need to farm from the G rank burst/origin quest list at the G counter. from tenran armor onwards you will also need sort of rare drops from hardcore mode monsters which is a mode you can turn on when accepting a quest that has a little fire next to it at the bottom of the little tab where you're deciding how many players can come on the hunt and etc. Hardcore gives slight visual changes to the monsters and gives them some new moves to have to handle. Goushu weapons also follow a similar upgrade pattern of goushu through origin but its only one upgrade each tier instead of 7 upgrades per tier like the armor which are much less tedious to upgrade however when wearing goushu armor their attack values are drastically increased up to +110 attack even when wearing 5 pieces of goushu armor that has been upgraded to origin tier so its worth it to max out the armor ontop of all the other crazy skills. evasion +2 is also the meta supposedly so you can put decorations for that into the slots you get. Quick note you can skip the goushu through supremacy step and just straight up craft a G supremacy weapon right off the bat as well which saves on time because for some odd reason to upgrade from supremacy to G supremacy takes the exact same mats as just crafting it so dont waste time like i did. They also have weapon glow the further you go. There is also plenty of craftable BMGX (Blademaster) and GNGX (Gunner) series decorations you can craft (or refine G rank gear you dont want into them as long as it is at upgrade level 7 of the series tier you are refining like to get a GX deco through armor refinery you would have to upgrade a henshu (aka normal species) G rank armor set probably about 21 times per gear piece if im not mistaken cause it works like the goushu with the 7 upgrades per tier) in order to max out your builds because they offer many skills at once and can spice up your sets like with aforementioned evasion +2. Crafting them seems more the way to go though for sure. Keep in mind the skill points work like the older games and must reach a certain total skill point value to activate them. There is also a system known as sigils which you can use parts or tickets similar to melding or talisman generation in world and rise to randomly generate different kinds of sigils that activate different effects like ranging from raw attack boosts to affinity boosts with which you can then brand onto a weapon to equip them and you can put up to 3 onto a weapon and freely remove and swap them out via unbranding. Sorry for the long post and happy hunting.
