even the best techs slip up & those DIL socket pins were easy to bend if you weren't careful. Some IC sockets made it much easier but other sockets and crooked pins (because someone dropped the chip!) could cause it. Great fix there Ron!

Those EPROM chip legs do make a difference... probably kept the +5V or grnd from running the chip....surprised that it just showed failed pins on chip. But great Ron that you were able to bend the pins back without them breaking. Thanks for the video.

If i ever learn to program games i am going to make a fixit ron arcade game. Just think about it. Repairing all the games in joe’s classic video games . Running trough the storage , and trying to evade broken pcb boards . And if you pick up bonus items like nes games you can use them as skates and fly . His weapon is an soldering iron that shoots solder blobs. Aaah men fixit ron the arcade game.... retro is the future men! I am telling you. ( or i have to much covid time at home)

Could be worse, at least the pins were bent on _socketed_ ICs, not on factory installed chips soldered to the board! The problem only appeared when some of the optional extras were fitted, when then didn't work.

I've seen some factory soldered stuff curled over, and then the solder barely touched the curled over pin so it still worked!

So much for my theory that it was sketchy repair work (incorrectly installed capacitors, bodge wires, etc.) Instead, it was basically just some "repairman" not paying attention to pin alignment when reinserting the ROM chips. But that was before Ron got his hands on it and got it working again.

Hey this is a weird question. Just out of curiosity, since I have no stake in video arcade games, I was wondering, it seems like you spend several if not 10s of hours to fix one game. How much per hour do you charge for labor? It seems like for an old retro game to pay for the labor and parts to fix it, it would be really expensive and not really worth it? Like a used car that's been totalled. Just curious, and I love what you do!

May be you can help. I have a VS. board with SMB on the right side aka unisystem mode. Boots fine but the image is very dim. My other boards are fine. It does have a Mike's adapter jamma board since I run everything through a super gun setup. Do you know why it could be so dim? At one point it was work fine then the next, issues. thanx
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 3 жыл бұрын
Was it working fine before on the Mike's adapter? Sometimes the video ground going out will make the screen immediately dark... the video ground is usually tied to the ground on the board, theoretically if you have a bad connection on that one ground the whole screen will still be there but be much darker. It looks like it has shadows on it if it loses the video ground...
@piratestation69
@piratestation69 3 жыл бұрын
@@LyonsArcade Yes it was working at one time. Low and behold it was the adapter. Swapped it out with a Pcbjunkie one and bright as can be. If there is a bad ground on the mike's adapter how do you test/fix. Also is there a way to fix the audio? The adapter really over drives the sound. Turning the Vol. Pot down does really nothing.

JOE's CLASSIC, what is the difference between a PPU chip and a PROM chip? the PPU chip has the video color palette code files loaded on it but also PROM chips have the video color palette code files loaded onto it, so I don't understand the differences between a PPU chip and PROM chip in arcade games
@whistler9
@whistler9 3 жыл бұрын
The PPU is the picture processing unit. Basically the GPU of its day. A PROM is just a memory storage device that cannot be written to after it is installed.
