We managed to make some good miles and make it to Julian. Unfortunately Sadie's Poison Oak reaction got worse and we needed to seek medical attention but we will be back out in no time.
Thank you to everyone for your support and kind wishes!

Glad to hear that you were able to get her to the necessary medical attention and prevent the issue from spiraling totally out of control. Taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture, there is perhaps a silver lining to this cloud. Given the latest snowfall at San Jacinto and points further north, taking a break may be a wise decision for several reasons. With that in mind and considering that Sadie's complete recovery may be assisted by smaller mileage days at first, this all may turn out to be beneficial given downtrail conditions. Just trying to see the potential positive aspects. I hope Sadie is feeling better and that you are soon on your way again! Wherever the trail may lead -- Be safe; keep at it!

So sorry for your poison oak experience. Wishing you the best. Look forward to seeing you back on trail. Of all the 2024 hikers I'm following, I think you two have a better chance of completing it than some of the others. Your making good miles right from the get go while some of the others are struggling to make 10 per day.

Friendly tip: if you boil water on a table, it might tipp over and cause havoc for anybody in its wake. Much safer to place your stove on the ground or on the bench beside you 😊

Poison oak sucks. I often carry Tecnu wash for it. Generally the PCT is just open chaparral without much poison oak, but you have to be careful near water sources. It's species name is "diversilobum" which is appropriate because it can be a hanging vine, a tree, a crawling shrub, etc.

Your putting in some good mileage. Sounds like she has a mild allergy to it. Calamine lotion works wonders on it Gotta get the hiker lingo down 😊 "hitch" is getting a ride and "Zero day(s)"lets us know your not quitting but just having a, or some non-hiking days usually in one of the small towns😀 great editing thanks for sharing!

Also you can find trail angels and hikers posting on a popular social media site your friends are on listed as trail angels with the name of the general areas you'll be hiking through. Example in far Norcal there is Quincy Burney and Etna trail Angels with their own pages. Probably others closer to you in Southern/ Central Cal. They have the info on, or offer hitches, food and accomodations.

Sorry you got your dash of Poison Oak. PO is super common up to a certain elevations here in California. Get very good at spotting it, you will see a ton of it in Northern California.

Poison Oak. Just like poison ivy but PI doesn’t grow west of the Rockies. Safe travels. More snow dumped in the Sierra and more to come April 5-6

Sorry about the poison oak. I had an ER worthy case last year…it was pretty terrible until I got some shots. Wish you a speedy recovery. I’ll be on the trail in three weeks and will be phobically concerned about poison oak.

Actually, out west, it's poison oak. It's a totally different plant....they look like oak leaves...thus the name. I've experienced the problem a number of times, resulting in visits to a doctor. Very uncomfortable.
