PCT Day 105: Chester to Burney, 1 of 3

In 2023, in spite of record shattering snowfall in the Sierra mountains of California, I am undertaking a thru-hike attempt of the Pacific Crest Trail in an effort to complete my Triple Crown! Follow along as I see just how far the trail will let me go!

Your photography while hiking through the burn zones reminded me of my family who live there. I can't imagine what life would be like living there week after week, month after month, after having escaped and then coming back to nothing. I really appreciate the video record you and other hikers record of those fires. It's important for people to see it -- an important testimony to horrific events that are all to easily forgotten.

Yeah I struggled a little on whether / how to share these sections, but wound up deciding that if my goal is to share the trail, then I should share these parts of the trail too

Big part of thru hiking is the chores, morning and evening. Can't get away from doing them or you hike will suck. So you get into a rhythm, sometimes you're on autopilot. All part of the deal. All the best dude, take care, good vibes, Crackerjack.

Good stuff! Yes sir appreciate all the effort with your videos. Flipping is ok …. likely a decision made by those with the determination, however may lack the exp. or confidence to push on thru the Sierras given the extreme conditions. So, none the less hats off to all of you out there.

in Yosemite the bears are good at getting down food hung in trees. they have been know to take those sacks and carry them off. Or gnaw on them until what is inside is just a mushed jumbled mess. This is mostly the bears in the more popular trail areas. the further you get away from the popular areas the less aggressive the bears are.

I’m impressed with the way you do your homework about various regulations along the trail. I’m guessing the powers that be know the bears in that area aren’t into ursacks, pun intended. Do you remember about the bear at Marcy Dam in the Adirondacks that taught himself and then other bears to open a bear canister? I’m hoping the PCT goes by that large cone of pulverized lava and that you are able to get it on film. I’m also seeing that some evergreen trees seem to have survived the fires. I also read somewhere that some pine cones require high heat to open and disperse their seeds. Keep on hiking!

The balance that nature has found is amazing (re: pinecones). I've heard that about bear opening canisters, too... All you can do is all you can do, I suppose. I think / hope my OPSaks (odor proof bags) help assuage any curiosity from the critters out here!

Love your videos! Is the GoPro your main camera or only one you use? How do you manage transferring and editing footage on trail? Device? Programs?

I do use GoPro primarily, close ups are narrow depth of field shots are with my phone (S23 Ultra). I transfer with a very small MicroSD to USB-C reader that I use to move the files to my phone and then process with the app, PowerDirector. Checkout my PCT load out video for a little more info 😀
