Great video! Love that you talk in great detail about the actual real things thru hikers may face. I found this video especially helpful. I'm planning either the PCT or AT in April of 17. Thanks again

Thank you for all the videos that you've been making, it's giving me a bunch of ideas and I'm sure many other people also. Thank you for talking about the half-mile app and going into detail. I didn't know I could do that with my phone. I'm going to be doing the J section on the PCT from Stevens past to Snoqualmie Pass this year.

Love your series. You add a lot to the dream. You mention your dad as an inspiration and maybe the only person you could hike with for the whole PCT. Please introduce him to us! It would be awesome to meet your inspiration. I'd love to hear his take on this project. What interests me currently is how you delt with trash and toiletries. Also habits/routines. What habits or routines did you pick up or continue once on the trail. Stretching, meditation, journaling?

I'll film a final Q&A and have my dad do a special guest appearance. Do you have any specific questions for him?
@WillSimpson-Maker8 жыл бұрын
+Away With Ingrid Ask dad about his backpacking aspirations. Would he through hike PCT or CDT or other. Ask is he solo hiker or pack hiker? Ask about his fears for you and how he resolved them. If I think of other questions I'll post them.

Those apps are amazing. Ive never seen anything like that. I just discovered that Guthook has apps for the CDT as well. A trail I'm currently planning to thru in 2017. I'm thinking I might soon regret buying that expensive gps lol! many thanks for bringing this to light. I had no idea.

Thank for sharing your experience. I hope you are not affected by the floods down there. I was wondering if you still hike or multi day hike? If you enjoyed your Pct video experience, can you make some videos on other trails you hiked, to show us the terrain, your gear selection, and thoughts of that trail.
@AwayWithIngrid8 жыл бұрын
I for sure will do that. I am more of a mountaineering type, but since thru-hiking I do feel like I want to find and complete more hikes as I travel! I'll be on the lookout for trails this year :)

Hey Ingrid, I have a couple questions....What was your trail name? how are they chosen? Did you need a passport to get in to Canada? Did you see any "big" people on the trail, did they struggle more? Thanks!

Hey Ingrid! What part of Texas are you in? I'm in DFW. shoutin' out to a fellow Texan. :-) Good video too. great info. I'll be attempting this SOBO in '18 for my 62nd b-day. lots of prep work already done. gear list mostly done and of course there's always going to be last minute changes based on finances and manufacturers updating their gear. Thanks also for the links. very useful stuff.

Can you do one on washing dishes on the trail??? Random but super curious! Also maybe if it's safe to bathe in water sources and keeping your hands clean so you don't get worms. Just what are the different ways to keep from getting sick in general?
@AwayWithIngrid7 жыл бұрын
+melonloveslife great questions! I just used water and my finger to clean my pot. I never bathed in any water source. I just made sure my spork and pot were cleaned as best I could. I used hand sanitizer before every meal and kept my toothbrush pretty well protected. Hope this helps!

Hi Ingrid. Great vids. Do the Guthook apps have alternative trail information, more specifically, for the John Muir Trail?
@AwayWithIngrid8 жыл бұрын
There is a specific Guthook JMT Guide App for purchase if you just search it in the app store!
@cupcakegirl11198 жыл бұрын
So did you always have a signal using the guthook app? Navigation in the sierras is one of my biggest concerns. Also did you need an ice axe?

+Cupcakegirl11 usually! It's hard too difficult when snowfall isn't high. No ice axe needed when I went through

Hi from Sydney Australia!! I loved watching your series it was really great. I'll be coming over in 2018 to hike the pct alone and I realise this is probably crazy but Im worried mostly about bears and mountain lions etc... haha we're you worried about them at all and did you have any issues along the way.?
@AwayWithIngrid8 жыл бұрын
That was never something I worried nor did I have any issues. You will see wildlife, it's part of the trail. :)

I didn't set out with the intention of ever making a youtube series about it. I went out there for the adventure and to just test myself mentally and physically. Carrying extra batteries or memory sticks or a video camera would have hindered my experience in a lot of ways. Although, I do vow to take videos of my next hike :)
@FredOroz8 жыл бұрын
Did you use any kind of Spikes and Ice axe as you went through the Sierra's?

What is the maximum amount of water that you would carry on the driest portion of the trail? Perhaps up to 7 liters?
@AwayWithIngrid8 жыл бұрын
no way never. Maximum capacity was about 5 L!
@mausershooter1008 жыл бұрын
Great video! What did your pack weigh as shown at 15:69?
@AwayWithIngrid8 жыл бұрын
base weight was always about 20.4 pounds. That photo was from the first 10 days of my hike so I'm going to estimate it was pretty heavy due to being in the desert section and also carrying quite a bit of stuff that I got rid of in the next month.

The apps are great help but people should seriously also think what they are going to do if the phone or GPS fails them. It that someone else has been able to hike the whole trail through with their phone doesn't mean that you can do it so what will you do if your phone fails you in situation where the weather is bad and you are relying to your phone just to stay on the trail? There should be back up plan made before that get on trail since search and rescue should not be anyone's back up plan if that happens, that should be absolutely last resort to use.
@PsychoFisho6 жыл бұрын
Its not like that. If you get lost, you retrace your steps to get back to an obvious section of the actual PCT (its a well-defined trail, except for the re-routes). My advice is to pay attention to direction changes and changes in terrain, as which point you turn around and take a moment to study what it would look like if you had to return that way. This habit will save your life. Once back on trail and you don't know which way to go, you can just wait until others with more knowledge appear. There's one to two dozen hikers on any given day of hiking season, passing through any spot. You're never alone for very long.

NO ONE ever talks at length about the paper maps. If they are printed on both sides, how many pages (or how thick or how heavy) are all the pages combined. Yeah, I know, you wouldn't carry them all together, you'd be resupplied with sections, but why does no one talk about the paper maps in detail?
@AwayWithIngrid7 жыл бұрын
+Maximus Meridius can't speak for everyone, but I didn't because I simply didn't buy or carry the maps. I knew people that did and had different sections mailed to them.
