Thank you for the well detailed video. The PCT is dryer and dustier than the Appalachian, so one additional wear item that is well worth its scant weight is a pair of Summer gaiters. They keep socks cleaner and eliminate the need to remove shoes to extract pebbles/twigs/etc.

I spent a month doing the Camino de Santiago in Spain, never walked or hiked before, just did it cos I met a dude wearing a backpack who told me to. Did it with a 37lb pack in flip flops without hassle haha. Definitely want to do the PCT though, even shaving the pack down to 15-20lbs would make a world of difference + room for a couple of extra luxury items. Thanks for the video Red Beard, lots of useful tips

Did Whitney Portal thru to echo lake, 22 days (2 rest days). Could have gone a lot lighter however. Going to try to do a complete pct- thru hike 2016. I'm shooting for 25 pounds tops (w/food & water) When I started at Whitney portal I was carrying 31 lbs gross. One long carry to my Vermilion lake resort drop pick up (GREAT Spot to shower, do laundry, some food stuffs and alcohol for stove), My next drop was in Tuolumne meadows, Yosemite N.P. another LONG 100 miles or so (4 days) and I finished at Echo, Lake (Lake Tahoe area).

Best of luck to you on your PCT adventure. I look forward to it. We are still in a drought out here and it is very dry throughout California. They like to steal your food too.

Hey Redbeard! Would you please consider doing some videos on how you gameplan, or how much actual strategic planning you do before hitting the trails. Like how you decide when and where you'll expect to bounce gear forward or send it home, how you plan the amount of miles you expect to do at certain points or choose where to stop, plus any tips and advice on the mental side of things going in would be a lot of help. Love your channel homie!
@RedBeard09249 жыл бұрын
This is so easy for me it would be a short video. I do as little planning as possible for my hikes. I take the right gear and then I resupply from the trail. This is possible on the AT and PCT not so much the CDT. So for me, I enjoy doing it this way! Honestly, people really try to plan out everything from home but you just never know what will happen out there on the trail. I enjoy each and every day on the trail and for me it's best with zero plans, just hike. Happy Hiking!
@booksRbad9 жыл бұрын
Will Wood It's really cool that you responded. I genuinely love your entire AT series, but your post-thru hike emotions video is very inspiring and my favorite. With that said, I get your points. I tend to over analyze things. You're approach is really smart, meaning that as long as the bases are covered gear-wise and safety-wise, maybe my researching every mile of the trail actually takes away from the experience and not adds to it. I've done some 3-4 day trips, but nothing where I had to bounce gear or re-supply, I think I'm just nervous that a dumb mistake could take me off the trail this spring. You're awesome, thank you for this channel and anything else you have to say.

Bring a back up water purification system, aqua mira, I wouldn't rely on steri pens alone... You know what you're doing though you're a pro, you could probably get away with no filtration, my Sawyer threads stripped out second day on JMT, I just chose my water selectively and I was fine. Happy Trails, loved the AT hike and all your gear vids, looking forward to the PCT, good luck and happy trials. Wish I could afford all that Zpacks gear.

should try the renovo trio for water filter it goes to .05 micron and weighs i think 4 ounces and can be used in more ways than the sawyer..the steripen is great till they stop working.. the renov trio can all come apart and be cleaned out and used again..so pretty much trailproof..igot mine for like 37$ i think..ilike to use it in the stra configuration and drink right from streams and it screws onto saywer or platpus bags or can be hookedinline with hydration bag mouth tube..or hangstyle..so more useful than the sawyer..

Check out the iPhone 6+ for your vids. The image stabilization is amazing and you would eliminate a lot of weight by dropping the extra chargers and batteries. Also you might consider keeping your long sleeve shirt through the Sierras. At the higher elevations the UV exposure is much greater, and you will be more susceptible to sun burns. The shirt will also help with the mosquitoes which may be early this year due to the low snow pack and early melt. I'd carry a head net too. ;)
@RedBeard09249 жыл бұрын
Awesome thanks for the info! Love the iPhone for sure and filmed with it for earlier videos but the quality of the Sony is much higher allowing for 1080P 60P not to mention micro sd card capability. When you hike in the Cap 4 how do you keep warm in camp? Only one pair of pants/underwear? What do you wear when doing laundry? You must sleep in the buff? I cant figure out how you get by with so few clothes. Maybe you can explain how you use you clothing system hiking, around camp, sleeping. I could use your assistance to lighten my load some. Thanks.
@RedBeard09249 жыл бұрын
I wear the down jacket at camp. I sleep in my undies nice and smelly. When you live on the trail for 6 months your gonna smell it's just how it is. When I do laundry I wear my rain suit 😉 It actually works great. When I carried 2 undies last thru hike I never put the second pair on. Ever. The last thing you want to do every night is strip down naked and change clothes. I hike till its bed time then I take my hiking clothes off wipe myself down with wet wipes and climb into my tent and go to bed. It works for me.

Love the channel. Thank you for your reviews and trip updates. Question: why both a rain jacket and a wind shell? I get that 2 oz is really not much, but why both from a function perspective.

I don't really like to hike in my rain suite if I don't have too. Plus like you said the wind shell is just 2 oz so why not. So many people rave about wind shells so I figured it was time for me to try one out.

RB, what are your plans for a bear can in the Sierras? just curious. Im planning on buying the arc blast but am wondering how it handles a bear can.
@ColoradoCamper9 жыл бұрын
You look to be well outfitted! Also, good plan to have the ability to carry extra water. My brother hiked the PCT last year during the bad drought, and if things keep going the way they have been, your hike will also be during a bad drought. He said he occasionally had to carry 6L at a time. But water caches in the desert sections were plentiful, though he didn't want to become overly dependent on them. Also, what size fuel canisters do you carry and about how many days/meals does one last for you?
@RedBeard09249 жыл бұрын
I carry the bigger of the two fuel canisters and it last a long time. I'm not even sure how many meals, it probably lasts me a week and I cook maybe 2 times a day. Might last longer too. I just didn't pay attention.
@JoshuaDavidBaughman9 жыл бұрын
Will Wood you'll be at a much higher altitude, pressure will be lower as well as temperature will hurt the pressure... Take that into account, man. You might want to look at something like the whisper light as you don't have to worry about pressure because it is hand pumped... ;) the international version is the best deal (it works on kerosene)

RedBeard your info is awesome. I am wanting to do the Arizona Trail next season...I wanted to ask your two pair of socks are heavy weight do you carry lighter weight socks for when it is hot? Is there a reason why you had one pair while you were hiking and another pair while you were resting in camp? When you washed one pair would it be dry by the next morning? Thanks for any guidance/insight you have :)
@RedBeard09249 жыл бұрын
Yeah the socks in the video are not the socks I use. I just hadn't purchased the ones I will be using. I am taking 2 pair of Darn Tough socks, I am trying out the ankle height socks for this hike, typically I used ones that came up to just below my calf. Also on the AT I carried a third pair of heavy weight socks for camp when sleeping, but they were overkill and my feet never got cold when in my sleeping bag. So this year I'm just carrying the two darn tough ankle socks. I switch at camp only because the socks i hike in smell terrible so i switch to a clean pair when getting in my sleeping bag to keep the bag from smelling terrible! I only wash the socks in town in laundry mats.

I'm very interested to know two things. 1. How the pitching of the Duplex will workout for you in the Sierras. Looking for stones at the end of the day might be tiring. (I ordered a triplex for my JMT). Also, how you gonna fit a bear canister and food for 9 days on the longest stretch over the Sierra in that pack? I'm doing this next year.. so I'm hoping to learn from your experiences!
@RedBeard09249 жыл бұрын
Good questions for sure. I feel very confident I won't have any issues with staking the tent on the PCT. I have stakes made for loose dirt and mud. Also Joe from ZPacks did the entire trail with same style tent and never had issues. I trust his recommendations. Also my 60 liter pack should provide plenty of room for the canister when it is required. Joe did the PCT with the 52L pack and had no problems. But you do have to make sure your pack is light and compact which mine is. Hope this helps some. Definitely will do post hike reviews on ALL my gear. Happy Hiking!

Yeah I send to a post office if it's months away I'll send home and have someone send it to a post office later. I put please hold for thru hiker and my name. Works great the post offices are used to it.

Im looking to get the same pack, maybe stick with a 52L. I saw there were a lot of add-ons that you can put in your cart along with the pack like shoulder strap lifters. Did you add anything other than shoulder pouch pocket and hip belt pockets? Would you recommend any add ons?
@RedBeard09249 жыл бұрын
I would highly recommend the arc haul as well. I added hip belts, side pouches and one should pouch

Did u ever use a second smaller pack to carry things
@RedBeard09249 жыл бұрын
No I didn't. Just my backpack. On occasion like in Yosemite or town I left all my stuff out of my pack and used it like a day pack since it only weighs about 20oz

Shane DeKin Campo to Kennedy meadows? that's 700 miles I hope you're thinking of another place. please,please research the pct water report and keep up to date on water caches and sources. the most I carried at a time was 8 liters for 42 miles on my thru hike this year.

Whens your trip? If its soon i can safely say you won't need any of your winter gear until you start getting into central/nothern california
@RedBeard09249 жыл бұрын
Good to know. I will probably send it forward if that's the case on the trail. Will cut my pack weight down to around 9 lbs. would love that! 😄
@ReesFamilyGarden9 жыл бұрын
i couldn't see a scenario where youll need anything more than a rain jacket (probably not even that) until maybe Yosemite. Been a very dry winter in Southern California. Its 70 degrees right now.
@RedBeard09249 жыл бұрын
Awesome. Yeah I heard record low snow season for California. Good and bad I guess. No snow up high but no water and crazier fire situations. I used to live in LA so I understand how it is even though I hardly got to explore the mountains when I lived there do to work! I'm so pumped about seeing California outside of the LA basin.
@ReesFamilyGarden9 жыл бұрын
Nice, yeah its been brutal for the drought with no real sign of recovery. El Nino was supposed to help but that never came. Theres a lot of beautiful land in California. Wish I could get away from life for a thru hike or even just the JMT but I do get to make it to Yosemite in July for a 3 night trip.

Everything that needs to be kept dry will be in dry sacks by ZPacks and the backpack itself is a dry sack, waterproof.

I'm really loving your videos! Would love to see how you load your bag and wonder how the bear can is going to fit once you get to the Sierras? That bag looked awfully full in the beginning of the vid. On a side note: Check out a book called HikerTrash. Excellent and descriptive read about a PCT trip from 2013.
@RedBeard09249 жыл бұрын
Yeah the clip was a bit misleading the bag has a roll top and I had it rolled down pretty far. Plus I just threw stuff in there not organized. It will be more then enough for everything I need to carry, at least I hope 😉

No Steripen, would just got with a pump style filter most likely. Lots of times its small pools of water. You could also use the Sawyer squeeze. Also I ditched the sun shirt since I chose to use my umbrella instead. Everything else was great.

Will Wood Great, thanks, one final question, was the 60L enough, considering the bear cannister? I'm planning to take a 48L prophet or the 52L of this one, haven't decided yet, and just 'deal' with the cannister later

What do you think of the bottom layering setup you brought for the PCT? I will likely be on the JMT next year in August and I wanted to figure out my lower leg situation. I usually bring a UL long underwear bottom, both for sleeping and for if it gets cold, mostly at night. I was thinking I would use the zpacks rain kilt instead of rain pants for weight savings, a set of gaiters, and 2 pairs of shorts - 1 worn, one extra. I figured I could always wear the long underwear bottom if it gets too cold, under the shorts... the idea being that I wouldn't bring any pants. Do you think that would work out, or do you think its smarter to have a pair of pants and a pair of shorts? I hate convertible pants, and don't carry them... did you end up buying shorts along the way or what? Thanks for the help.
@RedBeard09248 жыл бұрын
I did not purchase any shorts in fact I rarely turned my convertible pants into shorts because the sun is so intense that I received bad burns the one day I hiked in shorts. I am fair skinned though. Your setup should be fine, my only concern would be if you ran into heavy rain at elevation as it could get cold quickly and the kilt would not provide much warmth and the long underwear would get wet. But you could always pitch real fast and jump into sleeping bag to warm up. But still I think your setup would work fine.
@aklags8 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks for the comments, that's a good point. Maybe I can get away with some 3/4 length pants like the RAB torque capris that I own, with the gaiters on they would be like pants. And then I'd still keep the long underwear bottom in there. I am also fair skinned, so the sun is going to be an issue for me too.

@rogernuffer9 жыл бұрын
Oh I forgot to mention. The snowpack in Oregon is only 18%. This means spotty water sources and wildfire re-routes. So be ready to improvise. This also menas less snow in the high Sierras which is good for you. Right now the snowpack starts above 4000'. Should be way lower.
@RedBeard09249 жыл бұрын
Wow that's really crazy. I already know of one fire reroute in southern cal. Hope there is too many!
@amargnwalkr9 жыл бұрын
Just wondering why you made the switch to the camo tent. More stealthy? Also, Is it less see-thru than the regular version?
@RedBeard09249 жыл бұрын
Exactly I stealth camp and I saw other with camo tents and it blew my mind how well it blended in. I don't know how the pattern will do on the west coast but on the east coast it is amazing. And your second question is the 2 reason I went to the camo it is much less see through which should help in the sun on the PCT. But the camo tent does weigh more but only a few onces more. So I think it's worth it.
@amargnwalkr9 жыл бұрын
Will Wood Good info, I'm about to get one of these. The see-thru aspect was a concern for me with the sun and having a light on at night. All things considered (even at a few more ounces it's still much lighter than anything comparable) I think it will be camo. Sorry for the barrage of comments/questions- I'm starting the AT beginning of April and have been neck deep in gear considerations. Thanks for all your videos and answers, it's been a big help. Can't wait for my trip and to see yours.

Hey one more question for you Will, how do you feel about that rainjacket in terms of breathability and durability? I've had one of the old RAB drillium jackets (a demo from the first run in the NE USA a bunch of years back) and it is finally breaking down after many many seasons of hard use. It was extremely breathable eVent fabric, I'm assuming breathability of this fabric is a little bit lower because it's cuben instead of some kind of UL gridded nylon? Wondering if I should replace mine with one of these before my hike as well.

+Will "Red Beard" Wood Hey, let me start off with that I love your videos a lot. And I know you are going on your PCT Thru hike soon but I have an amazing recommendation for you that would really help you on this hike. This would be looking and possibly purchasing the Merrell Mix Master Move shoes. I use these and I absolutely Love these for any hot hike - which would be the desert and other bare parts on your PCT hike. They are really breathable and have amazing traction. Just really wanted to wish you good luck on your hike and try and check these out not only for the PCT but for future times. Cheers.
