I've was of the "ultralight" mentality long before it even had a name...40+ years. I've seen some really miraculous developments, and some not so positive. Your load out is very good and you should have a great trip. Just started using the Sawyer Mini and I love it. I have it rigged so I attach a Platy to the output. Each time I fill I give the clean bag a little squeeze. That way I'm back flushing almost constantly and don't carry the syringe. I use a Gigapower Titanium for group affairs. For solo or duo trips I use fuel tablet stoves exclusively. I'm a "boil water" trail chef and I've never found anything better than fuel tabs. I've been called a "gram counting freak" but there's three areas where I never skimp: packs, water, and medical gear. You alluded to pack vulnerability in your vid and I don't use an ultralight pack. I have medical training and a graduate degree in a medical field and my med gear reflects that. More than once I went off trail in the Mojave and I loved it. I took my water prep seriously (yeah, it was heavy) and I still do. I never carry my water load in one container. I don't want to lose all my water WHEN my bottle leaks. I use several Platypus bags and spread the load. Good luck!

I bought the patagoochie cap 4 hoodie last month before my AT roan mtn section hike. Temps were from near 10 at night with a high near 30. This is by far my favorite piece of gear to date! Just as u stated worked awesomely. The hood was perfect while hiking as I get to hot with a Beenie. I wore it for 3 days without taking off! Too comfortable and didn't even stink!

cool idea with the little cup to scoop water when it's low. I used to carry a Pump until I got the Sawyer Filter. That thing is one of my favorite pieces of gear. Light, small and as convenient as it gets. Good video and best of luck on your trip.
@RedBeard092411 жыл бұрын
Steve, I do not believe that would be necessary. This filter is pretty impressive. In fact it filters more things out of the water then most other filters making it impossible for harmful bacteria, protozoa, or cysts like E. coli, Giardia, Vibrio cholerae and Salmonella typhi (which cause Cholera and Typhoid) to pass through the filter.

Micheal, I have used the bag and tent in cold weather. The tent is pretty wind resistant about the same as a normal tent. The sleeping bag is not as warm as I was hoping for. It definitely isn't a true 15 degree bag and for a women I definitely would recommend something warmer or a synthetic bag.
@davidkovachi282711 жыл бұрын
I sleep cold. I tried the Enlightened Equipment Prodigy 20. I found it wasnt comfortable to 20 though. It was good to about 29 degrees. I trick I found though was taking my sythetic jacket inside my quilt and cinching the guilt around my neck. This added the warmth needed to comfortably reach 10 degrees. Putting the jacket hood over my head wearing a head over to.
@davidkovachi282711 жыл бұрын
David Kovachi Doing this I found there was enough warmth to not need to wear booties to keep my feet warm. A big plus. Normally I would wear some sort of sock at 10 degrees. But with this set up no need. Oh. I cant wait to see your videos of your journey. I will be watching.
@Tadpolehikes10 жыл бұрын
Speaking from experience of over 5000 miles on the AT, I like your setup. I have seen many a hiker suffer miserably using such equipment. Ultralight back backing is a technique, learned over many year s and miles. We each have our own comfort levels, what we consider acceptable to our needs for the conditions we expect to experience. Unless I was on a 30+ mile per day hike or had serious physical limitations, I personally would not recommend going ultralight. But for you, please be prepared to replace if even temporarily, nearly all of your equipment. Although light, I consider ultralight being in the 12 pound range for summer, 25 pounds for winter. I've seen like I said, hikers unprepared for the conditions to be expected along the trail using "ultralight gear. Using a cup to cook a decent real meal is not realistic, requiring 2 or sometimes 3 go rounds of cooking. And yes, when you are laying shivering at night I will offer you my spare fleece(my pillow)so you can get some good rest. I will let you use my water water filter too, as you will soon tire of the "pastry bag" method. I wish you the best of luck, and a most enjoyable hike , Tadpole GAME 1997, Tadpole +Twinkletoes GAME 2003. Twinkletoes perhaps being the smallest dog to do a thru-hike at less than 3.5 pounds, was made a member of the ATC at Hapers Ferry, Virginia. I believe we were the number 5 and 6 hikers to reach there in 2003, see our photo in the register that year. Just be prepared to make changes as we all do regardless of what gear we choose and you will do fine. Nobody ends their hike with the same gear they started with. Ultralight works best for experienced hikers on a limited schedule.

Looking back at this and revisiting the hole in the bottom: I realize it was "probably user error", but I would argue that user error should be factored into pack designs/construction. That is my only argument against UL packs made from cuben/tyvek/ripstop (without reinforcing the typical wear areas). I like Brooks running shoes. They were my go-to shoes for road work when I wrestled. I don't know why I didn't seek them out when sourcing my trail shoes. Having said that I adore the Salomons I did get. Glad your through was a success. Hope to meet you out there some day.
@RedBeard09249 жыл бұрын
Yeah they are more delicate for sure, however I then went on to carry the pack for almost 2200 miles and never had any other scuffs and the small scuff that was on there never got worse. But it is something to think about for sure, I do think if I was going to switch from light weight item it would be the backpack but I'm not switching for my PCT hike :) so that says something. Once you go light it's almost impossible to go back, atleast for me to go back. I am switching shoes, not cause I don't like the Brooks but because I can afford to have to buy new shoes every 500 miles, I will be switching to more heavy duty, but still light solomons that hopefully will give me 1,000 miles of use. Happy Hiking!

Hey Will, great vid as always! Have you considered the ZPacks sleeping bags? I'm thinking of going for the 20° one, paired up with the Goose Hood as I'll be hiking for about 9-10 months. Also, just a little recommendation, have you heard of the Geigerrig Hydration Engine? It's a bit heavier than normal bladders, but the features are unbeatable. It has a pump pressure for squirting water (great for showering, washing clothes/pots etc.) and it's super easy to connect the Sawyer filters.

Gave up water filters in the White's (headed south from Maine) at advice of a northbounder. Switched to Aqua Mira instead. Super light. Particulates in the water aren't too much of an issue on the AT (which is why you'd really need a filter system). The chlorine in Aqua Mira kills everything even in super cold temperatures (unlike iodine which loses it's effectiveness as it gets colder and also the longer it is opened). Aqua Mira has no taste either. No crypto, giardia, or anything got me using it. And only used up about 1.5 packs of it from the Whites to the end in GA. Something to consider.

Some good points. I just don't like chemicals in my water. The weight saving is great but drinking chlorine isn't good for anyone IMHO.

Did you not carry a sharp knife or a spoon/fork/ spork? I have done two section hikes, and have gotten my pack weight "down to" 40 lbs. lol. I think I'm doing great 3 days before the hike, but keep adding last minute things. Seeing videos like this helps me see some of the things I don't really need, but I do carry two sleeping pads and can't see myself saving the 12 ounces by eliminating the second 4' ridgerest. The extra cushion under my torso is a comfort I find worth it's weight.

***** The ZPacks gear is worth it in the long run. Cheaper and heavier gear may be okay for day hikes but for thru-hiking you'll really appreciate the weight being low. ZPacks offer a 1 year warranty on every piece of gear, so it's awesome for thru-hikers who are going to be using and abusing the gear every single day. If it gets damaged ZPacks will either repair it, replace it or refund it, and I've heard sometimes they may repair/replace and also give a refund! (BackCountry Nomad: cuben fiber material is anything but flimsy)

Years ago I always used to to do the Smokys in the worst weather. We did it every year to test gear. And at the end of the day we would trade information with others hike on what worked the best. It was a great way to gauge on what really worked. As you know not every company does everything well. Did you mention gloves here? Here is what we found as to what preformed the best as far as gloves.
@davidkovachi282711 жыл бұрын
Now I know not many people dont like Wiggys. Really I get that. He can be a little overbearing. But he makes a pare of killer gloves. They are called Kodiak mittens. They are not waterproof but they are really warm. I guess you already have rain mitts. These are not for rain but really good when its really cold. They have a hell of a lot of Climashield in them. I hope you look them up. REI wont carry nothing like these. For the price they are a real value. You will love the way they feel when you put your hands in them and squish that insulation because they have a lot in them.
@davidkovachi282711 жыл бұрын
David Kovachi These Mittens are really popular in Alaska which should tell you something right there. They are really light compared to their warmth.
@davidkovachi282711 жыл бұрын
David Kovachi Now if you are looking for something more extreme. The best I have seen is the Hestra Primaloft Extreme glove liners. 400 grams of Primaloft in the palms and 600 grams in the backhand. Who would top that? Combined with Hestra Overmitts. Those are waterproof and will last for years and years.
@RedBeard092411 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info on the gloves I'm in the market for a pair before I leave. My hands stay toasty without gloves most of the time. But I'm still going to invest in a pair before I leave.
@davidkovachi282711 жыл бұрын
Will Wood Then the Hestra Mitts would be overkill. They would have to be fairly large. Your hands would sweat in them. The Kodiak Mitts are really great. And they dry really fast.

Nice first rate setup! What do you estimate the retail cost for someone to duplicate? LOVE the amount of room in the tent, but I am concerned with the amount of space it requires to setup! During my 2011 thur hike i had to do several haste setups in patches of laurel. Also tenting space is sometime a premium in GA during peak thru hiker season. One more thing, take a small compass and know how to use it. Good luck on your thur hike!
@RedBeard092411 жыл бұрын
The cost for everything you see there including the clothing is $2,679 dollars. Of course I have built this gear up over the last few years and received a bunch as gifts, so I didn't spend that. The tent does need a bit more space then a one person but it's not too bad. I really wanted the extra interior space for the trip, hopefully I won't regret purchasing the bigger tent. I have a compass on my watch that wasn't featured in the video because I just received it. I will be doing a review soon on the Casio Protrek 3000-2.

A few days after watching your video, my girlfriend and I hit one of REI's garage sales and picked up ton of equipment that is similar (if not exact) to what you recommend. I will be, along with my girlfriend, thru hiking a small portion of the AT in May for the first time in years, and the hike will account for my girlfriend's first time out. This might be a silly question to ask, but where/how do you typically store your trash while back country camping? Will Wood, Solid gear setup man,we have alot of the same gear. Me and my brother are thru hiking the AT (2014) also. We will be starting a little before you on February 28th. I'm currently using my girlfriends youtube account but look for us on the trail. No trail name yet but my name is Sean and my brother is Dan AKA "U HAUL"... We wish you a safe and life changing journey. Good luck bro!!!

Thank you for the upload. You clearly have the experience, social circle, and money to hike right. I'll be hiking the Pacific Crest Trail and uploading videos as I go also. I hope to gain knowledge and explain it as I go. I'm hoping to lean my pack out as I go. I'm at 320oz (20lbs) at my base weight :\ Constructive criticism: I'm surprised you have such a light first-aide kit while hiking the with luxuries such as a pillow (rather than using a Platypus or a clothes stuff sack as a pillow). No fish hook, matches, medical tape, pocket lint for fires, or iodine tablets? Are these unnecessary? Does the Appalachian Trail not require such securities? Why is a pillow more valuable?
@RedBeard092410 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have a light weight first aid kit. Just bandaids, ibuprofen and moleskin which I have yet to use since I have had no blisters. But if you have blisters tape might be necessary, most people carry it just not me. Fish hook? Never carried one, or matches (I carry mini bic lighter), after first few weeks I stopped building fires, sleep became more important. The guys that want to build them every night usually just use grass and leaves to start a fire. But lent would be worth it since it weighs nothing. I use a sawyer mini water filter so iodine tablets aren't needed for me. My 2 oz luxury is my pillow. I had never carried a pillow backpacking until this trip and Im sleeping so much better with it. Most people carry pillows. Thanks for watching!

Great video, Will and good luck! How do you like your sleeping bag? I am new to backpacking and the one thing I am missing is a good sleeping bag.
@YesCheckYes10 жыл бұрын
Woops! just found your review of the sleeping bag!
@RedBeard092410 жыл бұрын
The sleeping bag is good. But if I had it to do over again I would get a quilt style bag from ZPacks. It's a pound and a half lighter and warmer.
@YesCheckYes10 жыл бұрын
I will take a look at that, thank you!

Very cool setup no knife? Long spoon ? It wish the very best in your trip may God watch over you and keep you from harm. What a blessing to be able to go and do a hike like that . I have been getting my gear lighter as well slowly . Today I found a great deal I was at a place called cargo largo wife was shopping and behind the counter on top of a shelf I saw hiking poles I made the guy get them I was like hell yes I will take them 29.99 black Diamond ultra distance Z poles brand new I looked them up at rei 170 dollars .couldn't pass them up.
@RedBeard092411 жыл бұрын
Dan, I usually carry a benchmade mini barrage, but havent made up my mind if i will even need it. I have sent it off to Benchmade to be resharpened which is why it doesnt appear in the video. As far as a spoon I use a cheap 2 dollar lightweight spoon from REI & do not now why it wasnt in this video :) Great deal on those hiking poles! Actually unbelievable!
@kcdan111 жыл бұрын
Benchmade are nice knifes . I have had 2 knifes I like to take and both have been stolen one was just a cheep mora but I liked it the one taken last week is very up setting to me a late 60s Case xx boot knife I have had from childhood over 40 years .

Do you have to add purification tabs to the water when using the sawyer mini? Great video.

I am curious about your opinion on hikers who are over 60. I hope to hike two states like Georgia/ Tennessee or Tennessee to Roanoake VIrginia. Most of the hikers I see in your video's are younger. Also how about a segment on food and cost of the hike.
@cminmd00419 жыл бұрын
You see many people over 55 on the trails! You can contact the info@appalachiantrail.org people and they can put you in contact with a bunch of different groups who have all thru hiked the AT. One group is over 55, but they have a bunch- hiked with their dog, veterans, lightweight- you name it. Great place to get really specific advice.

Will you mentioned you have an osprey atmos backpack. Can you compare it with the zpacks in term of comfort? I have an atmos myself and thinking of getting the arc blast as well. Good vid
@RedBeard09249 жыл бұрын
The Osprey is more comfortable for sure but is also designed to carry more weight. If you use the ZPacks at the proper weight less then 30lbs you will find it to be quite comfortable.
@dawnr65778 жыл бұрын
any suggestions for light gear on a budget? right now, my pack weighs almost 30lbs and im super tiny so thats a little heavy.

Hey Will! Great videos man. Was wondering if you wear the Cap4 hoody as a mid layer? Really wanting to get one of these but curious about how to use it in my clothing system. Thanks for all your help!
@RedBeard09246 жыл бұрын
I still love the Cap 4 but dont use it as often. Typically I would wear it in the mornings over my hiking t-shirt but after the AT I switched to a windshell and left the Cap4 at home to save weight and space in my pack. Now Im hiking in a Nike long sleeve breathable hoody called the Nike Breath hoody thats better than both and doesnt weigh much.

I watched your AT videos. I noticed it appeared you had a Spot gps on your pack. You never mention it. Just curious, my 19 year old son is wanting to hike the AT and I worry about him solo. He doesn't have a lot of experience but has good common sense. I'd just like reassurance as to his whereabouts as he travels.
@RedBeard09248 жыл бұрын
He spot is great expensive but great. If anything happens you can always press the button and get rescued from anywhere. Highly recommend.

There are parts of the trail that require Bear Proof Containers. Does the bag you used qulify or no? I'm assuming not; just want to clarify.

hi will im a big fan im going to try the thru hike starting march in springer thinking of a sleep bag how well did yours treat you and do you have any advice im not worried about getting cold hiking just when im sleeping kind of worried about the weather in the mountains
@RedBeard09249 жыл бұрын
I loved the Marmot Plasma 15 and would definitely recommend it to anyone. It kept me plenty warm enough. I would also recommend looking into the ZPacks sleeping bags. That would be the bag I would get if I could right now. They are super light! Good luck on your hike!

hey man nice set up just one thing i would like to add for you i saw you have a toilet roll have you ever used baby wipes or wet wipes before? takes up less space and i find you get a better clean. also i find it take up less space and has more uses. but thats just me
@RedBeard092410 жыл бұрын
I have used wet wipes many times on this thru hike. My issue with wet wipes on thru hikes is that there are only 10 to 20 wipes and when you run out your in trouble. I have found one roll of tp to last much longer.
@stinkyballgazer10 жыл бұрын
Will Wood I get packs of 80 and i haven't found that I have run out YET but one thing I will have to say is i live in Australia and i have found that if you don't close the containers the dry climate will dry the wipes out faster than you can wipe. But yeah was just an idea I thought maybe you haven't thought of.
@charliekendall42889 жыл бұрын
+Braden King FYI. Wipes end up in your trash since they are made of nylon with lotion therefore they do not decompose.
