Excellent video, thanks for sharing your time and knowledge

thank you for a wellmade, informative video. Especially appreciate you taking the time to show how you repaired the broken hose(stuff happens). I just bought a 2008 gx 470 with 193k miles on it. Runs smooth, but smoke comes out of exhaust. Thought it might be pcv valve.
@GX470PracticalMaintenance Жыл бұрын
Thank you! What color is the smoke? Does is make smoke all the time or when you are on the accelerator? Blue/Grey, Black/Grey, Whiteish/Steamy? Is the GX consuming fluids - Oil or Coolant?

@@GX470PracticalMaintenance Color is white and steamy. It's been sittin in garage for a week and I just decided to turn it on to run it for a few minutes. That's when I noticed the smoke.

smoke stopped after warming up
@GX470PracticalMaintenance Жыл бұрын
That is not good news. White and steamy indicates that its burning coolant, which is generally an indication of a leaking head gasket. A) Keep an eye on your coolant levels and engine temp, don't let it go dry or overheat B) Have a shop you trust take a look and give you a real diagnosis and quote. You can't ignore this one

So it occurs to me that you may not live in warm TX. Is this just cold exhaust condensation that goes away when the car warms up? More importantly does it smell sweet at all?

Any reason why a regular vent hose wouldn’t work permanently? (One with the correct ID and doesn’t need duct tape to fit, 😜 lol)
@GX470PracticalMaintenance Жыл бұрын
It should work just fine! :D My auto store only had that size, which was not correct, so I went ahead and showed how to "make it work". Now, if the parts store had the right size, would I have just left it, MAYBE! But they didn't so I ordered the oem part.

The valve didn't have an o-ring? I read that you need to be careful removing the old PCV and not let the old brittle seal fall into the case.

Thanks your video, Is this only one side or both side?
@GX470PracticalMaintenance2 жыл бұрын
There is only one. The GX is much like other modern V8s in that crankcase is common, so the whole top of the engine can breath through the single PCV valve.

Would a catch can work better here?
@GX470PracticalMaintenance2 жыл бұрын
No. 1. Illegal, that violates the emission laws. 2. Catch cans are usually reserved for lawn mowers and tractors with burned/stuck rings that create a lot of blow by into the valve cover, resulting in excessive oil being sucked back into combustion and fouling the carb/injections system and plugs, so a catch can captures that mess and keeps it from getting sucked back in, but on modern cars/trucks/suvs. The right answer is the pcv system capturing and burning any normal fumes from the valve cover.

I need to do this on my GX. It's got 500,000 miles. I know the dealer replaced the Valve cover gaskets at 180,000 they may have changed the PCV valve then. But even if they did , it's still got 320,000 miles on the PCV valve. LOL.
@GX470PracticalMaintenance11 ай бұрын
My bet would be they did not replace your PCV valve. It is easily disconnected and just stays with the cover. If you didn't ask for it and they didn't offer then it didn't happen.

Hello. I am getting the PO455 code, with the vac, trac, check engine lights on and it recommends that I change this part. If I replace this part, do you think it will fix the problem? You have a great channel!
@GX470PracticalMaintenance8 ай бұрын
Well, it means you have a vacuum leak somewhere, I would assume that the engine is also running poorly as a result. There are only so many vacuum hoses, you will need to inspect each one, look for one that might have just come off. You can always just buy vacuum hose at the auto parts supply and replace that length with the right size. Keep in mind that it needs to be vacuum rated hose, not just any ole hose will do, vacuum hose doesn't collapse under vacuum. Here is the Lexus diagram for vacuum, hope they help. images.simplepart.com/images/parts/toyotaOEM/fullsize/a1_173514E.jpg images.simplepart.com/images/parts/toyotaOEM/fullsize/a1_174306K.jpg

@@GX470PracticalMaintenance Thankyou very much for your help. I will follow your advice and have a look at the hoses, as a starting point. Also, thankyou for the diagrams. I’m really glad I found your channel. There seems to be some really valuable information on there. On another note, my Gx470 is running fine. There are no issues with the engine. I recently got the check engine light, with the vac off trac lights also. I replaced the gas cap, but that didn’t clear the warning lights. That is when I went to Autozone and got the P0455 code. But, I will have a look at the lines as you recommended!

There is also a vacuum line that runs down to the Transfer Case Actuator. You can check that as well. But if you have a leak bad enough to throw a code this might not be it, it is a small tube. You can see it in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ram4fmyOraeHo7c

Is there only 1 PCV on the GX470 engine? I looked out the part number and it says left.
@GX470PracticalMaintenance Жыл бұрын
There is only one. Check out this snip from another one of my videos for replacing ignition coils. You can see the vent hose on the passenger side, no PCV. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnO9dndsZtl9Y5Y
