Prince came to do a Charity concert at a hospital for Children not far from where I used to live, many, many years ago. He had two main conditions - the first was that he didn't want anyone to be there, other than the children and their families, because he was doing it for them and no one else. Second was that he didn't want any publicity or anyone to know about it. Because he was doing it for the children and didn't want any press or 'kudos' for it. It was a good many years before the story leaked out. That always impressed me, because Prince never seemed to be someone who hesitated to market himself, but learning that he DID have standards, and would do things for places like that and eschew the fame improved my opinion of him drastically.

Apparently Randy and his band were “on tour” in South America, I forget which country. They were detained by a group of armed men. They were going to try to ransom them and get paid. The band never told them who Randy was, they just said they were a band on tour. If they had found out that he was Michael Jackson’s brother they would have taken him for sure. This was very enlightening! I knew of all those different versions except possibly the Rebbie Jackson version. Wild that she released her cover the same year as Chaka. But so fascinating to learn about how the hook survived through the different iterations as other artists covered the tune over the years. I had forgotten he intended this piece for Patrice Rushen. If you ever circle back to Prince for a future video, it would be really cool if you did a chronology and break down of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U", from his posthumously released demo version, to the original 1985 release by his protege group The Family, to Sinead's world-famous cover and other covers that came years later. Prince was simply phenomenal and GREATLY missed. 🕊 💜🕊
