Me right now, my baby girl who is going to be 6 in exactly a week was diagnosed with type 1 yesterday, insulin twice a day. They wanted her to be hospitalized because she had a horrible UTI earlier this week. Decided with outpatient home care. I’m so stressed. She hyperventilates after her injections for about an hour and a half and acts almost dead.

If it gives you gives any hope. I had a dog who sadly just passed away who was diabetic. He died of OLD age at 18. Had diabetes for ten years. I was terrified when they told us but I was determined to make it work. He was my best friend 😢 I did a lot of research -spoke to plenty of vets and it was trial and error at the times. Complicated at times but I managed it. With two small babies at home. I’m not a doctor. Nurse. Vet. Just someone who adored their dog. I had it really under control. And it worked. A few bumps in the road but things that you can handle. Don’t be scared. Do your research. Your heart is in the right place. These dogs can live ajd long and happy and healthy life with this. I had a vet tell me “let’s be real. Most diabetic dogs won’t live that long”. Oh really my dog was 18 and the lifespan for his breed for a healthy dog. 14. He was 18. You all got this. Sending prayers and love ❤️

My dog was diagnosed with diabetes about a month ago. He is currently on insulin and diabetic diet. It had been a bit challenging in the beginning to balance his glucose level but since I have been using Free Style Libre sensor for his glucose measurements, it has been so easy. I can monitor his glucose level at any minute without causing any discomfort to my dog which is amazing. He is doing great despite the fact that he is 13 yo and has heart issues and thyroid.

I know this video is a couple years old but on July 19, 2022 my 12-year-old Chihuahua Macy got diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. Being already disabled myself with autoimmune diseases it’s been very hard to find information that I can print out and I’ve been reading everything I built a finder with 16 dividers and I document everything she does on the chart But being that I am disabled and now she’s disabled it’s so much more on me. Forget the fact that the vet diagnosed her gave us a box with needles and one box insulin and sent us out the door with nothing but the receipt for $1100. Needless to say I’m suing them. Everything I know so far about diabetes and keeping her alive and managed I’ve had to research, Reed., Comprehend and put into practice because I’ve been left to do this alone with no veterinary support.

U actually didn’t because if you did, they wouldn’t get diabetes. The reason why dogs get diabetes is through their diet. You probably feeding your dogs kibbles(processed and loads of sugar) and you giving them treats(also processed and load of sugar) too often.

Question.... when is a good time to take the dog for a walk ... is it after his insulin injection or before... thanks!
@pdsa7 ай бұрын
Hi there, thanks so much for reaching out 😄 The most important thing with a diabetic pet is routine! So our advice would be to set up a daily routine which includes exercising them at the same time each day, alongside giving them their injections and feeding them at the same times each day. This should be something that fits in with your lifestyle and routine too and will help to keep their blood sugars steady. Some dogs will be fine going for a walk before they are fed and have their insulin but some may need to be fed first and walk after. Each diabetic patient is individual and their normal blood sugar level will vary from one diabetic dog to the next so it is important to check with your own vet too as they know your dog best. Our Pet Health Hub has some great advice; www.pdsa.org.uk/pet-help-and-advice/pet-health-hub/conditions/diabetes-in-dogs 🐾

But was wondering what has been recommended giving all that she needs to stay healthy. Thank you very much. Loved your video.

i have a 14 year old dog, who has had diabeties for over 5 years now, and foodwise i am lucky to be very specific. we homemake food that we mix with kibble. Half and half. The food is usually chicken or/and salmon, with a veggie (broccoli, peas, carrots, maybe one or a mix), and a starch (brown rice). The kibble is Taste of the Wild, and its the same hes eaten even before his diabetes. We've kept mainly because kibble provide nutrients we may miss from our homemade mixture, plus its something he knows, and it helps to stretch the homemade mix. We def spend time and groceries to feed our lil dog well but since we have settled into a system its very natural and we are able to find cheaper butcheries who offer chicken scraps or just have coupons. We are very specific, and I always say to call your vet (and see if your vet knows a diabetic dog specialist) before changing their diet. I am lucky to have found a vet i trust. Our first vet did not know how to help our dog once he was diagnosed and we learned the hard way to find a specialist. For the homemade food, me and my family will make a large batch that will last 3-4 months. We freeze most if it. We keep them in containers that are a reasonable size to last about 4-5 days ,since the food typically starts to go bad in that time. My dog is completely blind with full cataracts but he is still so confident to wander around. This is a lot of text, but i promse the homemade food has changed my expectations for my dog's wellbeing. He has grown a more lush coat of fur he's never had before, and while he has typical old dog issues, he certainly has been aging very normally for his condition.
