Excellent tutorial. Anybody who gets this thing will be months if not years ahead of the curve if they take the time to check out all the extensive tips you're sharing. Great playing too, you are a pleasure to listen to. My buddy SwanDog got this HD500 - he's a great player in his own right, but your tips really helped him get past the newbie blues with this Pod. One of the big audio mags did a "tube amp to digi box" ear test. Even producer legends in the biz couldn't always tell the diff.

This is the best comment I have seen for this pedal. I think you nailed it. I try to keep up with the top electronics, and for the money, this is the best pedal for home (non professional) high quality recordings without the noise pollution of the tube amp. I think this sounds better than the ornge, and mesa tube pedals.

Hi, yes it is the same settings for live playing. In fact, I designed these patches to sound good while played through my amp. When playing live, and you plug the POD into your amp, use the clean channel on your amp and set the Bass/Treble/Middle controls in the neutral position (for example, if your controls go from 1 to 10, set the controls at 5). Keep in mind that these settings will sound different in your amp, unless you are also using the same and cabinet as me.

Man, you're really good. I see that you've incorporated the expression pedal with your new patches so that you can leave it in the heel position for rhythm and just move to toe for solo. I came up with that same strategy for delay (mix % and fb time) using my Gmaj2, but never thought abt upping the gain as well. You are appreciated!
@PDXguitarfreak
@PDXguitarfreak 12 жыл бұрын
When using the amp as a monitor, I put the POD straight in the front of the amp, in the clean channel. I set all the clean tone knobs on the amp at the straight up (neutral) position. I haven't tried it in the loop, which is what I would do if I was running it through the amp's high gain channels.

Thanks Tim, the "Dave's Main Tone" patch keeps evolving. The latest version of it (ver 3) is much better than the one in this video. But thank you! As for how I came up with the sound, it wasn't too difficult - I had this thought of having the same amp used twice, but set up differently (one with more mids, but less gain, and panned slightly) and the concept worked. It takes up more DSP when you do two amps (which limits the number of effects at once), but I find it rewarding :)

Hey thanks, glad you like them! I love the HD500, but was also very disappointed in the patches that it came with, from a rock/metal standpoint. Fortunately, there are tons of patches created by players and posted on the Line6 website. That's how I got started making my own patches, by finding those that I thought sounded decent and looking at how they were put together.

Part 1: Yeah I agree with you 100%. For years, it had to be a tube amp and analog pedals for me too, nothing beats that sound and of course, I still got it all. I bought this unit primarily to simplify the recording process, and allow late night recording. Before I was relegated to weekend daytime recording because I didn't want to wake the wife/kids with my cranked 1/2 stack LOL. When I do my direct recording, the only thing that I really miss is the ability to have controlled feedback.

@PDXguitarfreak
@PDXguitarfreak 11 жыл бұрын
Part 2: That said, I think it's important to mention that the direct recording sound (while it works for my KZbin videos) doesn't capture the sound that the unit is capable of when played through a nice warm tube amp with a punchy closed back speaker cab (which is what I use as a monitor when recording) - I wish I could share that sound. Anyway, thanks for the comment man... I should have a new vid up within a few days with some new patches that I think are improvements. Rock on!
@PDXguitarfreak
@PDXguitarfreak 12 жыл бұрын
Part 2: Basically you have to use an amp or powered speakers for listening. I suppose you can use your PC speakers as monitors too by plugging the POD directly into them when creating your patches - maybe I should try that. Still, I'm usually pretty happy with the patches that I create while using the amp as monitor. Also, I consider all of my patches starting points, and typically do a little EQing of the files when I edit my KZbin videos in Sony Vegas.

Great demo - well produced and informative. When going into the front of an amp, I use only the pre-amp modeling and effects on the Pod HD. Going into a PA or recording rig, its best to add full amps and cab modeling, keeping the PA as flat as possible. Also, HD tone tends to suffer if you dont ensure sure there is only one guitar input (Variax in my case), otherwise the signal gets doubled. You can get some really outstanding tones from the Pod HD as PDX GF demonstrates.

I really like the idea of assigning the Wah to one of the footswitches instead of the Expression pedal switch. Seems a tad more reliable to engage the Wah.

Hi Eugene, my intent of purchasing the POD was to simplify my direct recording process. However, because I use an amp as a monitor while I'm recording, that is pretty much how the design works. I put it through my clean channel with the tone knobs all around five so it's generally flat.

Great video . However , I am old school, and I believe there is nothing better than the real classic analog pedals sound.Most guitar players now are into the digital modeling.I have a 1978 MXR 117 Flanger and a 74 Script Phase 90 Bud box.I use mostly pedals for my effects sounds, but I do have a Fender Cyber Twin :) ,and Mesa (50/50,& Triaxis) and an old Rocktron Intellifex.....Great sounds thanks for your vids !!!

I plug into the effects Return on my amp. That bypasses all the preamp controls on the amplifier and goes straight into the power amp section, so the amp doesn't colour the sound from the Pod, it just amplifies it. I then set the Pod to Combo Power Amp, which disables the microphone models and tunes the output to a combo. Try the other Pod output modes though, you may prefer the other modes. If you also want to use the amps own tones then look for details on the 4 cable method on the L6 site

Part 1: Let me see if I can answer this. The guitar goes into the POD, and then running out of the POD are two signals. One signal goes to the computer and the other goes to the amp. The amp is used as the monitor for listening, and the computer is used for editing (editing on the PC is so much easier than trying to use the little dials on the POD). Ideally, I would prefer to use the computer (and its speakers) for both editing and as a monitor, but I'm told that you can't do that.
@BingBangBoomMusic

Sorry, I should have also added that you may need to plug something into the amp input if you're using the effects return method. Some amps will require this to enable the power amp. Just a jack plug adapter will do.

Hey thanks man. I was really excited about the new Soldano, but now that I have it downloaded, I think I need to spend some time trying to really tweak it. It's very smooth sounding, but almost too smooth LOL. The chunk in the low end gets lost, unlike the Boogie (CaliTread) or the Engl (Angl Fireball) amps.

Hey there, I run the POD into the clean channel of my Peavey JSX amp, and keep all amp tone knobs (mid, treble, bass) on 5 to keep the amp from coloring the signal that much. I have heard of other running it directly into the power amp section of their amp and then others running it through effects loop, but I have not tried that yet. I'll probably try the former, but not the latter... I just need to make sure it's safe first. I would like to think it is, but I want to be safe.

Part 2... The only time I ever run out of DSP is when I have two amp models in use at once, and then I add too many effects. I've never had the problem when using just one amp model, but then again I'm not the type that uses 10 effects at once. :)

If you are using the HD 500 edit software on your computer, you will get a warning in red letters on the screen that says that you have max'd out on DSP and it won't let you add whatever additional effect you are trying to add. I'm not sure how to tell if you are getting close to the max though... I just wait until it tells me I have maxed out, and then if I really want to add the additional effect, I then go back and figure out what I can remove from the chain. I hope that helps.

Sounds great, I am looking in to purchasing one in the next week or two. I do have some questions for you, I noticed you mentioned that you get different sounds out of your PC versus running through an amp. Is there any way to edit your presets using a PC but listen to it through an amp at the same time? Or does editing through a PC only allow you to use the PC speakers? How does that process work? Thanks

I have a Carvin V3 100 watt tube combo (4 12ax7 preamp tubes and 4 EL4 power tubes. the amp has a set of series and parallel effects loop. Should I plug in the HD500X to the series effects loop to bypass the preamp tubes? I'm new at playing 6 string guitar (I've played bass since 1971) and all I know is that a 100 watt amp is a scary thing for a new guitar player! Your patches are great and you sound like you know how to adjust amps. I'm 61 and stupidly bought this amp not really thinking about the fact it weighs over 80 lbs. the young guy I bought it from loaded in my car trunk(he did tell me it was heavy. It will stay home and I'll get a lighter, smaller amp to drive to practice with.

+Donna Brusch ... Hi Donna, I did this video almost 4 years ago, and at the time, I would simply plug the HD500 into the main input of the amp, and run it through the clean channel. That worked for me, but it wasn't used for gigging (I haven't played in a live band since the early 90s)... it was simply at lower volumes to use as a monitor for the HD500 while I was recording in my den. These days, I'm not running it through my half stack... I'm running it into some little powered studio monitors while recording. If you are going to use it live through an amp with ample volume, you will probably want to experiment with different setups to see what works best. The effects loop will probably sound better, especially if your clean channel tends to clip at higher volumes. However, I recommend doing a Google search for "POD HD500 four cable method," as I know that some people use that approach to setup and really like it. I hope that helps!

Dave, I just bought the Pod HD500X,and I have the Peavey JSX Combo.. What and How do you think is the best way to connect the Pod to the JSX ? Do you use the 4 cable method( which im not familiar with) or just connecting through the front of the amp? Thanks in advance for your help bro..
@PDXguitarfreak
@PDXguitarfreak 7 жыл бұрын
Hey man, I currently don't run my HD500 into my JSX (for the last few years, I run it through some powered studio monitors, as I believe that it better replicates the sound you hear when you go direct into the PC, and therefore when I create patches for my KZbin videos or recording, it will sound more consistent). That said, it definitely sounded amazing in my opinion through the JSX. I have done it both ways as you describe - using the four cable method and going straight into the amp (in both cases using the clean channel with the amp tone knobs all set at 12 o'clock). I thought the 4 cable method sounded better. I hope that helps. Using the 4 cable method seemed a little complex at first, so I had to draw a diagram of how to connect all of the cables so I would not forget LOL
