CORRECTIONS: there were two errors in the tabs. 1) In section two, I played it correctly, but tabbed/explained it wrong. The final note is played at fret 8 of the A string, not fret 10. Thanks to Michael Easter for noticing and informing me! 2) In section ten, I also played it correctly, but tabbed it wrong. The final note is played at the 22 fret of the high E string, not fret 20. Thanks to stevesheroan4131 for noticing and informing me! On another note (pun intended) what do you think about my analysis of the final note of the entire solo? I'm talking about playing it as a regular note versus a harmonic? Agree or disagree?😊
@diverdown1982
@diverdown1982 Жыл бұрын
100% spot on. I tried doing the last note with a harmonic and there is no way. Plus you are right that Eddie always had his bridges set so you could not pull up on the bar. Leave it to PDX to settle the debate once again!
@michaeleddington5125
@michaeleddington5125 Жыл бұрын
Def not a harmonic for the last note. True that Eddie set up his bridges not to pull back, but he did use a steinberger on the 5150 album that would pull up with whammy bar.

interesting approach to the ending...absolutely nothing like it online anywhere which is amazing as this sounds as close to the record as I've heard. I've watched countless hours of Ed playing & can't believe I have yet to see him do something like this. Seems like Ed usually had so much coke, alcohol & god knows what else in him that he probably wouldn't even remember doing this. Ed's like Charlie "Bird" Parker in his playing...in the moment, high as a kite & see what happens.

Absolutely amazing solo lesson! One of the most underrated Eddie solos. Very tastefully put together! Thank you. Any chance of an Unchained The Night solo lesson reboot? Since there has been more lessons and more footage out since you recorded your lesson I think you may change your mind about some things. There's a lot of weird licks I just can't seem to make sound correct. Or even a lesson on the outro solo would be so cool!

Last couple, three months, I've spent hours with ya, daily, watching the vids-well, my dumbass got an electric piano, so it has me sidetracked, relearning Charlie Brown music. My guitars are pissed. Anyway. Man, even if you needed to get a studio player to do the parts, it would be AWESOME if you'd do a few similar style vids with at least the Van Halen keyboard parts, broken down piece by piece. Haven't looked much, but I don't think that's available. I'd just want the lessons with your presentation, it really is making stuff a lot easier on me. Regardless, Thanks, for real. You are tops.

I agree, Ed would have had to moved that note up in some way to get the final pitch up to that A. Are you doing it the way he did? Dunno but it is certainly more accurate to my ears that's for sure and after watching the many VH solos you have posted here I am inclined to think you are right on with your way of thinking about how he actually done that section...

I'd never heard the point about this solo being played on a different guitar (strat). Where is that knowledge from? Also, given that, is it possible that it (tremolo) was just setup differently than normal or that the nut didn't have locking for the strings and, for that last whammy part, that he might have just pushed down on the string behind the nut to get the pitch up to an A if played via a harmonic vs fretting? (I have my strat disassembled to replace the pickups at the moment so I'm not able to test that push-behind-nut thought to see if pressing there can raise the pitch enough) Another possibility is that it was simply a tapped harmonic A. Regardless, killer job on this!
@PDXguitarfreak
@PDXguitarfreak 5 ай бұрын
Thanks! Regarding the Strat, I just remember hearing that years ago... plus it has a very Strat like round tone to it (neck pickup perhaps). As for that final whammy part, your theory is a very interesting one... clever approach if that is how it happened! :)

I never knew that about the guitar tunings with the keyboard songs. Is there a reason for this? 🤘🏽
@PDXguitarfreak
@PDXguitarfreak Жыл бұрын
My assumption is that when Eddie wrote songs on the keyboard/piano, he's primarily in keys that he was more comfortable in on the keyboard/piano, which happen to be in non-flat keys. Jump is in C... Right Now is in F... I'll Wait is in Dm... Cradle Will Rock is in Am. Therefore, when picking up his guitar to solo, he is playing in those keys too, and likely he found it easier to pick up a guitar in standard tuning to play along. That's my assumption . I hope that makes sense :)

@PDX Guitar Freak's Tabs & Lessons man you are a master at this stuff. Must have dedicated a lot of time to studying Ed's playing. I appreciate how you teach it breaking it down into 2 bars at a time and playing it slow then normal. Thank you! Can I get some clarification on the last part. The harmonic note and then bar dip slide. When you slide after the harmonic , you aren't touching any of the strings right? Or else the harmonic would not ring out?

That's how most people try to do it, and certainly Eddie was known for using natural harmonics and then going wild with the vibrato bar. However, I explain in the video at 21:36 that it's highly improbable that Eddie did that. Listen to my explanation in the video, as I go into more detail 🎸
