Is the output going into something similar (voltage divider / pullup) that it would on a Commodore? The tone issue sounds like maybe a pulse width modulation output without the proper low pass filter on the output.

W4JBM thank you very much! I will look into what you mention, and I also will try the lm386 at 9v as you suggested in the other vid too.
