I love your attitude to cooking. Nothing that isn't necessary. Use proper ingredients. No insistence on "equal sized bits". My kind of soup. Thanks so much. I see the last comment prior to mine was two years ago. I certainly hope you have some other recipes to offer. Really enjoyed this one. Thanks!

Top recipe and well explained. One thing is about giving a dog a cooked bone as it can shatter into splinters when crunch on. My wife had this belief. Somehow in 1983, our dog was hospitalised with the Vet for a week with a stuck chicken bone splinter. Not us. Sandy on coming home would/could not drink water. The Vet said nothing else he could do, I had to put Sandy down which still cuts me up when I think of it.

I think I’ll try this. I like basic recipes. They’ve been around for forever because they’re so good! If a person needed to speed the process up a bit they could cook the ham hock in an instant pot or regular pressure cooker.

One of my favorites! You made it perfect with just pepper. Have you ever rinsed the peas first? I slosh it around in a bowl like panning for gold and all kinds of junk comes out that's not pea dust. We have dirty peas in the U.S. :)

dictare I normally keep my yellow split peas in a large storage container but these are clean from the packet. I normally buy 10 LBS at a time. Is a family favorite in our house. My 80 year old Mother in law will phone in advance to make sure I have it when she gets here.

This recipe is so elegantly simple, for such a fantastic taste experience! Especially mid-winter. And thoroughly enjoyed for several days after, adding whatever vegetable is nearing its use-by or best-before date from the fridge. When/if I get bored(?) I even experiment with Indian/Thai curry, green, yellow, red spice pastes, coriander, cumin, turmeric, galangal, ginger, garlic, capsicums, cucumbers, carrots, swede, parsnip. dill, parsley, bay-leaf, curry leaf, etc etc. We have FEASTED!!! Hint - go easy at first, but experiment!

This is more like I make this soup. Only real difference is that I use bacon bones instead of ham hock or bone and add a roughly chopped onion into the pot at the beginning. I don't remove the bones part way but leave in. When the kids were little I would remove the bones at the end of cooking, remove the meat which is then returned to the pot. Bones are discarded after hubby had a chew to make sure there was no meat left. Now, a bit of meaty bone is added to the soup plate. And I don't add pepper. I rinse the peas before hand to remove any loose skins and dirt etc. If I am good, I will soak overnight to cut down on cooking time for them. Used to cook on the stove top until I got comfortable using a pressure cooker and now that is what I use. I don't give any cooked bones to my dogs. And like you I prefer the yellow peas. Hubby couldn't tell the difference in taste between the yellow and green, but I find the yellow have a nicer flavour. Don't know where you are from but I buy the McKenzie brand as well. Look forward to seeing more of your videos.

I love split pea & ham soup. I’m prepping to make your potato, leek & bacon soup. I’m putting it in my insta pot. I’m thinking I’ll slow cook it. You are rubbing off on me. Can I just use ham, not ham hock. Being from the south we use it, I just don’t want to because of the little bones when it starts breaking up. Suggestions! This is next, after the lasagna and I make yellow rice & Mexican corn casserole.

@SavannahVu19854 жыл бұрын
Going Half and half with the different types of peas is ok but the cream or sour cream is unnecessary. The peas make it quite creamy already, trust me I love creamy soups but this recipe really doesn’t call for it, if you really want then maybe add the sour cream to your own bowl at the end if you want extra creaminess. Hope that helps. Good luck!

1. Never has green split pea soup tasting bitter, and I've had it's soup 100s of times. 2. Not sure about a smoked ham instead of a normal ham, but I guess it's fine. It doesn't seem to fall off the bone very quickly here though… 3. Agreeing with another commenter, washing the split peas is really recommended. There's Always some dust and dirt and sometimes little stones in a packet of dried stuff like that. 4. You say there's no rush in cooking this soup, but then you start crushing it with potatoe masher. Just let it cook for another hour, I say (or perhaps pre soak the peas, as some take much longer than others). And in general I would say, a respect you recreating your family recipe, but this soup defenately would improve very very much with some flavouring veggies. It defenately needs some leeks and celeriac. That's really basic cooking, and it's recommended to improve on things from the past . :)
