I was due to clean my window ac units filter ad coils and decided to record it for educational purposes. Because of filming one handed, trying to limit length of recording and hearing thunder I didn't get it as clean as I normally would.
Its important not to forget your coils and cooling fins when you clean your filter. Fine particles and debris do get past the filter and the constant moisture causes mold and mildew.
Some safety precautions, especially if you are sensitive to any of the above and chemicals would be gloves and mask; as well as, keep good ventilation while cleaning your unit.
Models differ so adjust as needed and see your owner manual as well.
Disclaimer: I am not a professional ac specialist but have been cleaning my own units for decades. Anyone using this method described in video does so at their own risk.
This video also shows removal and installation of filter.
Average Lifespan. Most window air conditioners have a service life of about 10 years, but this can vary depending on how often the unit is used and whether or not it is properly maintained.
What this means is people living in areas with short summers will get longer lifespan. In states like Florida, where I live, units are used nearly year round. Which in turn shortens their lifespan. Add to that poor maintenance and it drops even lower. This too effects your health because we are what we breathe. Regular maintenance will also help keep your unit fresh.

You are very resourceful. I repair HVAC and refrigeration for a living and many people think that you cant clean air conditioners with water, not realizing that they stay damp and make ice then defrost the ice, which is water lol. And my favorite tale is that you cant lie a refrigerator down, it has to stay upright or it will be ruined. Anyways, I love this video! I removed mine from the window and hosed it down which was a pain to do. Imma try this, much better way.

Was going to say (not sure) but it looks like a two piece ac, you can remove 1 screw on each side and pop the front cover off....then you can slide the whole unit out leaving only the shell......just got done doing this with two Frigidaires. You can clean the coils this way....I use coil cleaner...let it sit the spray through with a hose.....

For anyone who watched this and wondered if it works, my air conditioner is now blowing out wonderful cold air. For several weeks it was making horrendous noises and cracking sounds could be heard. Well it was frozen in addition to being really dirty since I've never cleaned it. I was so scared it would break before the weather cooled down plus it was barely blowing out air. So I'm praying Huge blessings on this wonderful lady!!!!!!

I had black dry pieces of mold and I did all this to the unit but can't get up the back, but now it's blowing out nice cold air. I have a different brand upstairs and did the same thing but when I went to turn it on, it was not really working. I hope if I let it fully dry, it works(I hope) I have to do this again next week because I haven't washed mine in over 2yrs 😳🤭 it smells so fresh now. I actually used oxyclean and boy it cleaned it great but to upkeep it, I need to use that mold and mildew spray 😊

@@jennifertwigg-garnsey2113 What's happened is your ac is not tilted down enough in the back so the water from humidity leaks out in the back by gravity. If it's not tilted enough the water sits in the ac and created mold and sludge from the dirt, leaves, bugs, etc. The fan also doesn't help if the mold and sludge is sitting in the AC, the fan spits it out all over the place and you could ruin the AC. It's happened to me as the fan spit out all the sludge onto my windows and window tracks. My neighbour told me in time and I had to remove the ac. Took out the cover of the ac by removing all the screws and what I found inside was mud all over the ac and took me 2 hours to clean it out. The lady in the video has to find a way to remove the ac from the wall, remove the cover, and clean it all out. I have the same AC as hers and let me tell you Frigidaire make amazing air conditioners that blow very cold air but you need to clean them inside every 2-3 years to remove bugs, leaves, and whatever else doesn't belong in there.

Honestly, buy another one, or remove your unit from the window and take the entire case off to clean it. Do not mess with mold. This cleaning video cannot clean the mold out of your unit, because its in the blower compartment which you cannot access without removing the case from the AC.

This video was very informative. I watched it twice to make sure I had all the supplies I needed and got to work. There was so much gunk inside I couldn't believe my eyes. The only thing I did different was use a garden hose to spray the back of the unit and sprayed until I didn't see anymore gunk. Now it blows super cold and doesn't have that odd smell it had before. I watched many videos on how to clean out a window unit and yours was the best! I cant remove mine and was having leaking under the unit that was coming inside the house. Down the window sill and dripping onto the carpet. After following what you did on the video my window unit has never looked so clean! The leaking has stopped(must have been clogged somewhere) and the air coming out is much colder and fresher.

Thanks for a great video! Our unit is like yours, and so we did a deep clean yesterday after seeing your video. We discovered something and wanted to share it in case you had not noticed it on yours. My daughter bent down and looked up behind the digital panel and found the fins extend up about two inches behind there. The dirt was an inch thick up in that area! We used a brush to grab as much as we could, and will vacuum today with those micro attachments to clean that area more thoroughly. Couldn't spray it as it would have made mud. Thanks again.

Click on the circular cog next to CC, click on speed and change to 1.5 or even 2. This speeds up the video, which was very informative. I do much of the same to clean my a/c. My hint is to use liquid fabric softener on the filter when you're done washing it. Just pour a little onto the filter while it's still wet. I just use my hand to coat the mesh and use a towel to dry it off. It provides a coating of light wax and a nice smell. Makes it a little easier to clean next time due to anti-static effect. And smells good.

Your video is fantastic! Just wanted to let you know, you do not need a special tool to revome the front casing on your model. There are two screws holding it in. Remove the screws, you can then release each bottom corner by gentle pushing outward ( i do 1 side at a time) after thats done gently lift towards you while pulling up (like a hinge) until it releases. It does make a snapping noise at that point, which made me jump and think I broke it the first time i did it. (I didn't). I leave the electric wire connect and just clean carefully around it.

But after watching your video I think I can accomplish much the same thing ! I have the exact same model in my mobile home in Fl. The only challenge I have is that there is a protective cage around mine on the outside that can't be removed. But i think with a lot of cleaning spray and my garden hose set on "shower" ( so I don't bend the fins ) I think I can get it done. Or at the very lest much cleaner than it is now ! Bijou Yes! I put some towels down around the window sill and took the front part off like in the video. I mixed bleach and water and sprayed the top where I saw the black build up. Sprayed it until it was all gone. Then I sprayed the bottom vents with regular soap and water. The towel caught any drainage that might happen inside. And since the AC is leveled the rest of the water drained outside. Every removable part I washed in the bathroom. I turned it on after putting it back together and I was like brand new....minus the bleach smell. I’d say it’s better to use soap and water and avoid the bleach if the smell might bother you.

Hi, I also live in a mobile home and I had to install a window unit and the instructions said put an awning over the top if the unit will mostly be in the sun. I put it in 3 years ago and this is the first year I have had to clean it,and I did it more or Less the way you did it and it works. Thanks for the reassurance. God Bless.

Thanks for your video. I have a very heavy one in the kitchen , and even though I clean the filter EVERY day...seriously , and in addition to this , I use dryer sheets, that I put in front to catch more dust, which seem to not restrict air flow, but help keep it cleaner(and make the house smell good) , but with having tons of dirt and dust and a unit running 24/7 in Texas, this brand new unit froze after a little less than 2 months . I did a light clean this morning, but will do a really good clean tonight, after the temps are only in the 80ies at night ..hahaha. I have pulled out smaller units and hosed them down before, but I wanted a way to keep it in the window, at least for a whole season, we might be able to pull it in the winter . So, thank you

+Regina Roberts You're most welcome! Other than humidity Texas and Florida are the same heat and dust wise. It's such a nightmare on ac units! Another big help with dust is adding a cut to size AC filter. The one I use is Duck brand and its 24" X 15'" and 1\4" thick. I cut it to the size of the grill cover, not the filter, so it completely fills any gaps. The neighbors dog had shredded it when I had cleaned it few days before I filmed this. lol I have 2 of those now so I can swap them out quickly and I don't have to do heavy cleaning as often. Thanks for watching!

Yes, I used to do that, too, but sadly my new unit has the "pull-out" type of filter, I can`t open the door and put another one in, in addition to the regular one. So, I came up with the idea of the dryer sheets. Once I have the unit running, there is plenty of suction to keep them in place, just by putting them in the front of the grill. I change those 4 times a day, keeps the house smelling good for a bit (got lots of dogs, too) , but nothing prevents the A/C coils from getting dirty . Will be cleaning it tonight or early tomorrow. Those 100 degree temps are really getting a bit annoying. It`s supposed to cool off tomorrow and rain coming :-) -yeah

Thank you so much! This is EXACTLY what I needed today! My 2 window units have been tripping the breakers repeatedly, which is a good way to wear out the breakers. My window units are removable, but one is on the second story and they are so heavy and awkward! It is a major job to get them in or out. You have saved my day!!! God bless you! :D I will try to post a report on whether this solved my breaker-tripping problem, for those who have a similar issue.

Hey (jeanbean1414), I got to thinking about your "Tripping Breaker Issue". You mentioned that you have not 1 but 2 AC Units in your home, is that correct? If so, it may have something to do with your 2 AC Units alone (and if they are running constantly), as in you have to much of a draw on the power...dependng on your homes wattage for your area 210 volts or 120 volts? But hit me back after the cleaning of AC's, just to see if it stops "Tripping the Breaker", I'm interested and a little curious to find out? Diane from Ontario, Canada. Cheers!

Take your water hose with the sprayer, and spray the whole inside of the outside of the unit, once you have hit it with the Clorox, and it will run like brand new for quite a bit longer between cleanings, also take a wire hanger and Rheem that drain opening as it drains, all of the slime and water will come out, I do this with my unit, wich happens to be the same as yours, it is also a Frigidaire..I believe we have the 8000 btu unit, and it lasts usually about two months between cleanings, you absolutely have the right idea just need to add those steps and it will make your life a little easier, great video!

"Thank you" does not convey my sincere appreciation for your taking the time and trouble to make this video. I have watched so many videos where some guy pulls a window unit out and takes it apart to clean. Mine is in there good and as a single older woman I can't do any of this heavy stuff. I live way out in the middle of freaking nowhere and the bugs and the mold and the vegetation takes over at every turn. I am out here on my own and you saved me having to pay some service guy who knows how much money to come and take it apart and clean it, after which it would probably be clean for maybe three weeks tops. For those who have a mold problem inside the upper louvers where the air comes out, thanks to another commenter I learned you can pop the louvers out (in this particular model) and clean them and have access to the styrofoam area to spray and wipe. I was also able to remove the directional fins at the same time, although they are pretty flimsy plastic so you will need to be careful. Thank you again for posting this!

@Faith Abounds It looks like there is mold in the vents where the styrofoam is. You should be able to pop those vents outs with a screw driver. Even if you can’t, you can spray the vents and styrofoam with vinegar, peroxide or a product that is all natural - Benefect. A mold specialist told us to spray vinegar and peroxide periodically in that area. Great video.
@snazzz11
@snazzz11 6 жыл бұрын
Would you tell me what strength peroxide, please? Do you mix the vinegar and peroxide?
@MsNora60
@MsNora60 6 жыл бұрын
Harold Ginn I just spray the vinegar straight full strength. I also spray the peroxide straight full strength because it’s already at 3% in the bottle that I buy from Walmart. I sometimes add drops of tea tree, lavender or orange oil to the vinegar but it’s not needed. Once it dries it smells so fresh. I have mixed peroxide and vinegar and it was great. When I mix the two, I usually add 1/4 peroxide to the bottle and 3/4 vinegar but half and half would be great too. It works and keeps the mold out of the styrofoam. I even spray the grid with it.
@snazzz11
@snazzz11 6 жыл бұрын
Ok, thank you. Few more questions, I apologize for the barrage: What kind of vinegar? White or AC? Do you mean 3% peroxide? That is the strongest I can find to buy, anywhere. Do you scrub inside the vents? How do you know it gets the mold that you cannot see? How long do you let all of this dry after cleaning the entire AC before you can turn the AC back on? I am super concerned because ours, only a year old, is full of mold inside the vents where the Styrofoam is. A resident here has copd and she cannot go long with no AC/air circulation with it so hot and humid here. Thanks so much!
@MsNora60
@MsNora60 6 жыл бұрын
Harold Ginn Harold Ginn I just use the white vinegar. Yes, I meant 3% peroxide. Thanks for catching that. We have to spray our AC every couple of months to keep the mold out of the styrofoam and vents. They don’t tell people that but it really is what needs to be done with any window refrigerated AC to keep the mold out. I have asthma and if there is any mold at all, I cough so we keep it cleaned out. Also another good tip, before turning your AC off, run it on fan for a bit to dry it out and that helps keep down the mold also. The Benefect product is very pricey and we have used it. It’s a natural product with no VOC’s in it. However,we use the peroxide and vinegar more. I used the Benefect a few weeks ago and it started smelling of mildew within a few days due to high humidity so I sprayed it with the peroxide straight, then vinegar straight and it’s still clean. 👍🏼 I spray it real good and in the past, have stuck a paper towel back there and moved the fan by hand to wipe off any residue. Now that I spray it consistently, I haven’t had to do that. Oh and my husband went outside and sprayed all the vents outside with peroxide and vinegar also. There wasn’t any mold outside but we just sprayed it anyway. Also...When I clean the removable filter, due to allergies, I don’t tap it, I just turn it backwards and use sprayer to spray it off. Then I use a mixture of 1 cup vinegar, 1 cup dawn and spray it and wash it that way. Then dry with paper towels. I hope it works for you all like it does for us. I’m not a professional so have to make a disclaimer, this is what works for us.
@MsNora60

Harold Ginn I don’t time how long I leave it off. I kind of just know. I let it sit for a good 30 minutes and then turn on fan to dry out and then start the AC on cool.

One of my units has the filter reset, so it took about an hour for it to completely dry and run as normal. +shessosweet88 Cleaning it shouldn't effect the controls. When cleaning your cleaning the fins. Always unplug the unit and turn it off prior to cleaning and stay way from controls. If you haven't already tried this unplug the unit, wait 5 minutes and plug it back in and then set it to cool. The condenser has a built in delay, mines 3 minutes, before it cycles on. That's to prevent over heating. Your controls aren't supposed to reset themselves other than when you unplug it or in some cases turn it off.

Faith Abounds at Melody Acres thanks but I did try that a couple of times, my digital pad is off to the right hand side right next to the opening where you can see the coils and so I did get close to it when cleaning I guess I could have caused some kind of short but during the day when it's hot like today the machine stops moving around the settings and only did it this morning when it was really cool and not working as hard! I don't know. It is a lot cleaner now and stopped dripping tons of water in my house since a ton of slime came out my drain hole in the back. I did leave the unit plugged in when I did it although it was turned off the whole time (mine is plugged in behind my stove and really hard to unplug) next time I will turn off the breaker while I clean it which I wish I would have thought of before

+shessosweet88 Do you by chance have it on economy or energy saver mode? On some settings the display shows room temperature rather than temperature its set at to maintain. I keep mine on cool and when condenser shuts off the fan and ac remain on, circulating air. My neighbor has his on energy saver and his unit shuts on and off and the display changes. It sounds like it could be something like that. It could be also your paying more attention to it noticing things you didn't notice before. I set mine on fan it changes display to actual room temperature. It's hard to say without seeing it but what your describing sounds like it's doing what it's supposed to. With cooler nights they will cycle down. Mine is on 24/7 or else I wake up sweating. In Florida we can get 40 and 50 degree changes in 24 hour period. With ac fan running I don't have to use heat as much because the ac pulls cold damp air out of the house.
