I was at the medieval week in Visby (Gotland, Sweden) a couple years ago and my uncle had a big medieval band back then. We sat next to the ocean with the sunset next to the medieval wall around the city (built in the 1200-1300s) under a tree and he played guitar and sang renaissance songs in his historically accurate troubadour outfit. One of my best memories probably and I highly recommend going there sometime.

Very nice music, guitar has many different colors, can be very legato and polyphonic at the same time. For non expert listeners I'd like to give some inputs : 1. The illustration shows a guitar baroque, when most of the pieces are played on a classical guitars. They are VERY DIFFERENT instruments, and obviously not the same sound. I would say as different as a cello and a viola da gamba. 2. JS Bach never composed for guitar. He composed a few suites for Lute (BWV 995, 996, 997 and 1000a) which are all superbe, however he did NOT play lute... he composed it on a weird instrument called "LautenWerk" doted with a... keyboard !! And, trust me, sometimes he forgot that we, lutenists (and guitarists) must play all written notes with 4 fingers only !!! (so did he forgot that a singer must breath from time to time...) LOL. 3. At the renaissance and baroque period, both "baroque" guitar and Lute were played. Lute disappeared in beginning of 18e cent. because it was not loud enough for large modern orchestra, opera, etc. Also because it became more and more an elitist (very demanding), very expensive (same cost per month than a horse !), and therefore "aristocratic" instrument. When guitar ad contrario was adopted as an easy to play popular instrument, becoming again in the mood in 19e cent. Hope it helps ;-)

Another facet of Bach's genius is that anything he composes for one instrument sounds just as good played on any other instrument.
@jean-yvesPrax Жыл бұрын
@@rickmarti77 You are very right, even played with weird instruments (for 17e cent) like accordéon or saxophone it can work very well. I must however confess that I reach my limit when I hear the Chaconne in D minor played on an electric guitar ! LOL
@RadicalCaveman Жыл бұрын
@Jean-Yves Prax Were lutes rented by the month?
@jean-yvesPrax Жыл бұрын
@@RadicalCaveman LOL no, I said "per month" not to confuse with the cost of the lute itself: the strings were in gut and broke frequently, so the cost of strings (and according to the type of lute you can reach 17 strings) was said to be equivalent to the budget for maintaining a horse ! On top of this, the cost of printed score was also very high at that time. So the lutenist negotiated with his "prince" his salary + a monthly sum for the lute and scores and living expenses.

Sadly KZbin Google just changed their policy (in the US, which had already been changed in other countries I believe), that they can place ads every 5 minutes in any video they want. Content providers are not at fault, and there is nothing they can do about it pretty much. KZbin Google is predidictably trying to strong-arm people into paying for their monthly subscription, which I personally would never do under any circumstances. I can't stand them, they are evil.
