I’m surprised you haven’t seen any other field mice staying out like you are. Soak some cotton balls in peppermint oil and just placed them strategically around the corners and that the entry points. They don’t like it. We use that for our camper. It works pretty good and of course, still up any entering points.

Lars is precious and he will keep mice down and out of your vehicle. Chances are the thing just got in for a short time and he caught attention of it. Which is why when you opened the door it wanted out as fast as it could. Look under your rig for any entrance points because that's how they crawl up into the vehicle when you're in grassy areas. There's a really good Mouse blocker that's a spray foam and that should block any entrance points when it hardens.

Mateo, the best things to deter rats, mice, and shrews is dryer sheets...smelly ones, and Irish Spring soap (the original green) you can put dryer sheets and pieces of soap under your hood around hoses, in places in undercarriage, and in hidden places within. I even put Ithe soap in the pockets in the door, and storage area. Doesn't smell bad either. I have used that in my vehicle when I was on the west coast and helped folks in their homes, big and small. It deters them, not kill them.

You can try peppermint essential oil to keep mice away, and it work for ants too. One downside may be Lars may not like the smell 🤷‍♀️

I think putting in some type of door screen on your side van door or back door will be nice- whenever you venture out of your van the door screen can help keep mice from entering when your leaving your doors open for ventilation. Putting moth balls under your hood helps with mice. Please check all hidden places in your van. Some people tie and string the month balls under the hood. I would not put the moth balls inside.
