Great video...I walk 6 miles a day. Would love to walk in the snow there at Mackinac Island. I definitely would buy a snowmobile. I like to do that too.

Beauty and quiet... Does this town have a sort of electric or central heating system? I haven't seen any smoke or steam over the roofs...

Most houses now have electric heating. There was a bad, bad fire near downtown in one of the historic homes that was a fireplace fire.

How beautiful! Could only see one car (truck, actually); is that normal for your island? Is hunting allowed there? Lots of skidoos and bicycles, looks like a fun place, and thanks for letting me tag along!

Yes! Vehicles are prohibited on Mackinac Island except for emergency vehicles (ambulance and fire trucks) and in the winter, the police department offers a service for residents over 50 to drive them to the grocery store, ferry, or church. There is no hunting allowed but there is a small population of deer and of course squirrels and rabbits. It's mostly walking, biking, and horse-drawn taxis in the summer and snowmobiles and horse-drawn taxis in the winter! A special place for sure!

Other than Doud's Market...what is really open on the island in the winter? I see lights on in some of the shops and snowmobiles up and down the street, but nobody around?

It's a lot different, that's for sure! In addition to Doud's Market, 2 restaurants are open in the winter, a few places to stay, the library, and the hardware store. There are 500 year round residents as well as the public school so it's pretty darn quiet compared to summer but it's similar to any small town. Things like Bingo at Community Hall on Tuesdays, trivia at the bar on Fridays, Basketball games at the High School. They also have a great XC trail system that is kept up nicely! If you would like to see the Island in a totally different way, enjoy exploring in the cold, and are happy hunkering down with a good book, then it's a ton of fun!

Correct! The exception is emergency vehicles (ambulance and fire truck) and in the winter, the police department offers pick up and drop off service to residents over 50. They will take them to the boat, church, and the grocery store if needed. You don't see vehicles often, but occasionally they are out especially in the winter time.

That was a police truck. There are a few emergency vehicles on the Island including an ambulance, fire trucks, and police trucks which are used mostly in the winter. In the winter the police trucks also provide a transportation service for people over a certain age who don't use snowmobiles anymore. No vehicles in the summer is a good sign!

Hardly any. The main season is May-October. During the winter it's mostly locals and just a few tourists who make the trek over.
