It was so interesting to see that I found most of the mentioned romances overhyped except for From Lukov with Love (don’t come for cult MZ romances😂). I especially agree with L.J. Shen, I just don’t understand the popularity behind her books. Her characters are overly crass and pretty much interchangeable… as for “The Hating Game”, I think the hype or excitement I felt definitely stemmed from the illustrated cover, which has now been taking over the romance publishing world. Story-wise it was just so-so. Great video as usual, Jess!

Maybe a controversial take, but I feel like traditionally published romances are for non-romance readers. There. I said it. From my experience, people who are avid romance readers love indie and other readers who like the occasional romance like traditionally published books. There's nothing wrong with falling into either category, I just find this to be the case watching Booktube!

I’ve actually been feeling this way for the past few months! Traditionally published romances have just been so average and boring, but indie romances are what I’ve been LOVING.

I write romance under a pen name. This is absolutely not controversial to romance authors. Most especially big 5 romances target WF readers, which often makes the romance a lackluster B plot. I actively cringe when I see friends get deals by a particular big 5, because I hate almost every romance I’ve seen from them.

Birthday Girl definitely lived up the hype for me, I enjoyed both Emily Henry's books equally-and I agree they are possibly more hyped for the general public, rather than for the genre readers. Probably not at the overhyped level yet, but I'm all right with not reading The Duke and I, watching the show was enough (but I'll probably read the rest of the series).

You hit on exactly why I never even got past the fifth page of Beach Read. The cover and the descriptions I had heard made me think it would be light and fun, but the tone from the very start was too heavy. I don't read dark books at all so I quickly moved on. The Ice Planet Barbarians series is the standard-bearer for me when it comes to alien romance. This is the series that introduced me to the subgenre in 2015. However, I can see why you may have felt bogged down at the midpoint of the series. It did start to feel a little stale, but then the author added some events that shook things up after book 9.

i havent read the third book yet but i definitely dont think the ravenhood series is overhyped! i also didnt think it was boring. the reason this series is so good is because of how much it HURTS. they get you so emotionally invested in what's happening and dont give you the happy ending you wanted. i DO wish that they had stopped with the mystery bs especially once you find out what theyre actually doing like its not all that serious. i didn't really care about the plot just the characters which is good because i think that if you care about plot its pretty lacking.

I'd agree with your LJ shen comment. As someone who reads her books, after her last release (The Monster), I'm pretty much over it. It was absolutely horrible, the twists weren't anything special, and I felt like I was reading her prior books with different characters. PWMOV could've either been shorter (less flashbacks), or longer, showing us how Poppy and Alex's relationship continued to develop. I loved Birthday Girl! And I appreciated that there was no cheating in it. I like Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy as like a trashy read, but her recent release (Freed, told from Christian's point of view) as been so bad, I haven't been able to finish it.

@sassycatz44703 жыл бұрын
I agree. I don't think "Well Met" was some game changer. It was a pleasant romance with a unique setting. I don't know how I feel about Penelope Douglas ... yet. I tried to read Punk 57 and despised it because it was about children -- 17 and 18 year olds -- being abusive to each other with no believable excuse about their lack of parental supervision, which I think was convenient to the author. These children, desperately, needed guidance from some adult. I was especially turned off by the abusiveness. Love should not be abusive. The word bully should not be in the same description as romance. There's no such thing. I hope I like Birthday Girl better because I also have that on my TBR. If I don't like that, I will never read this author again. I loved Beach Read. I have yet to read People We Meet On Vacation. The Hating Game was extremely over-hyped. I've seen that trope done dozens of times before -- and I read slow, so there's probably dozens of more examples -- and so NOTHING UNIQUE. Co-workers who don't like each other, but fall in love? "What a revelation!" What is the deal?! I can barely remember the details as it's the trope that is the only thing ever referenced. Sorry. Very, very over-hyped that's a trope been done a million, million times. In fact, there are 1930s movies with the same trope. I think the Outlander series is an experience every romance lover should at least try. I loved the first four books, but I didn't like number five at all. Too many anecdotal scenes without a cohesive plot. I have no interest in The Bromance Book Club series. There are other "marriage in trouble" romances that readers will love. I can give recommendations. There are dozens. I loved The Deal. But, that's the only book of Elle Kennedy's I've read. The Unhoneymooners was good but not great. It's too hype but still good. I hate so-called Mafia romances because these people are murderers. They are absolute thugs. They are not romantic in the least. I grew up around Philly where there were mafia criminals with shoot outs around the city. They are sick common criminals. Hey, maybe we should have Nazi romances! What do you think?! (The Godfather movies did a real disservice in romanticizing these despicable pieces of crap. Talia Hibbert's Brown sisters series is good, but too over-hyped, in my opinion.

I just noticed you have a classroom wishlist. What grade level do you teach? As a high school English and Creative Writing teacher, I have to keep my Goodreads ... ahem .. silent for fear of students discovering just precisely what Mrs. Markov reads.

I teach 10th grade English and yearbook ☺️ all of my students know about my channel! I don’t hide it from them and use it to show them my passion for reading!

I DNF’d Sarah J Mass whatever her first book was. The writing is very pedestrian and borderline below average. Ice Planet Barbarians is fun and worth the hype just for the uniqueness and how fun they are. Cora Reilly is overhyped. All of her books are the same. She just changes the names of her characters. I’m surprised no one mentioned Sophie Lark (Sophie Lark stans don’t come for me).

I don't understand why people are saying LJ Shen book's are overhyped ,I have read some of her books and they are really good .

Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like the 50 Shades series and its copycats (365 Days and so on) gave romance a bad name more than anything else? I'm glad of course that it led some people to discover other (and better) romance writers. That being said, I get so annoyed when I tell people I read romance and they reply "Oh, like 50 Shades?", and you get just the slightest hint of condescension from it, the "poor soul probably doesn't read a lot of books" type. In my case, that is rich given I read a lot of French lit given I almost did my B.A. about that, history biographies in preparation for my Master's - I'm even qualified to work as an editor for a publishing house, but yeah, guess my background is completely invalidated and I don't read "real books" because I read romance novels "like 50 Shades" 🙄 Yeah, I can read Balzac AND Lisa Kleypas, who would have thought... Bonus points if the guy then proceeds to recommend Catcher in the Rye, which in many cases, they haven't even read themselves...

I loved Spoiler Alert and like you, it was the guy. He was so so nice and I could identify with him and his neurosis.... not that I have what he had, but I have known folks with crippling self esteem issues and it's so hard. I can't wait to read Alex's story later this year! The Hating Game? I'm there for that. I have loved her three books 👌🏾👌🏾

"Spoiler Alert" is the only book I have ever given a one-star review on Goodreads. I hate read my way through it after the first couple of chapters.

If you love Sarah j mass, I dont recommend blood & ash. The first one was pretty good and then she just lost the plot. Literally. Like 6 days passes in book 2 and 3 across 1400 pages. It is the most painfully boring series I have suffered through. I won't be finishing it. You can definitely tell it was intended to be a trilogy that she extended across 6 books due to the hype. That decision severely hurt the series IMO.

If you want to read really good motorcycle mc books, read the Signal Bend series by Susan Fanetti or the Dartmoor series by Lauren Gilley both are amazing and so much better than the Fallen men

Didn’t like the Unhoneymooners or any of C. Lauren’s books and I’ve read four. Gosh. Maybe this author and I just don’t click. ☹️ From Blood and Ash was just okay, the next installments are definitely overhyped.

I so agree with Fifty Shades and After being overhyped. I read Fifty Shades and I got bored. I don't understand how likeable Christian Grey was. After is just too stressful like back and forth useless problems. I love the Flock series though. Love Sally Thorne, Colleen Hoover, and Christina Lauren. I didn't enjoy People We Meet On Vacation as much as Beach Read. I enjoyed Talia Hibbert but not Olivia Dade's Spoiler Alert. 😊❤
