I was first introduced to the donut peach sometime in the mid-90s. The lady at the store recommended submerging them in a bowl of half & half (or milk, as a poorer substitute), and using a spoon to slice off chunks of the peach. She was absolutely right. The peach juice blends so well with the dairy.

I think the spherical peaches, if you get a good ripe one, are significantly better than the flat ones. Much juicier in my opinion. Of course, a lot of the regular peaches you get in the supermarket are picked unripe, while the flat ones are picked riper and treated more expediently than the standard peach

I bought a property that has two mature peach trees. One is the flat donut peach, the other is a standard round peach. I find both have excellent flavor. I like that they ripen at different times. The donut peaches ripen first. By the time they finish, the round peaches are just starting. Gives me a longer window for fresh-eating. And it’s less overwhelming to preserve fruit from one tree at a time.

Ever since you pointed out that the name of your channel is Weird Explorer and said that's what it's always been I actually felt weird every time I got a notification. I still watched all your videos and enjoyed them but I also had this really uncomfortable nagging feeling. I wondered how my brain could've been so wrong, because I truly believed your channel nome had been Weird Fruit Explorer. I KNEW that I'd seen that name, in print, for this channel. I usually have a very good memory. My mind doesn't usually make up false memories. So the other night I couldn't sleep so II went back and was watching videos that you'd posted years ago and I discovered that while your channel name is now Weird Explorer if you look at the title of much older videos Weird Fruit Explprer is in the title of the video's you posted. For example look at Top 10 Most Delicious Fruits - Weird Fruit Explorer It's ep 102 posted on August 30, 2015. Aha, the words Weird Fruit Explorer are there!!! See? Those of us that remembered your channel name as Weird Fruit Explorer weren't crazy or experiencing the Mandella effect after all. It could be that we were remembering Weird FRUIT Explorer from the video title descriptions or your channel name may have been changed and you were just messing with us telling us it never had. At any rate, whichever is the case, I'm just glad to know my universe hasn't glitched, I haven't shifted dimensions, my memory didn't totally fail me. The foreboding I'd experience each time I received a notification from Weird Explorer is gone and I can once again enjoy your awesome content with zero trepidation. Yippee!!!

My favourite fruit that I have tried so far is a papple. A papple is a hybrid between a pear and an Asian pear. They have the sweetness of a packham pear with the crunch and crispness of an apple. If you haven't tried one yet I would strongly recommend you do, they are delicious

Most of what is called a pear apple or apple pear is not actually a hybrid , it is Pyrus Pyrifolia (a pear species)
@erikjohnson9223
@erikjohnson9223 Жыл бұрын
That is just a pear, not a hybrid. Specifically an Asian pear, probably Pyrus pyrifolia. They lack the aroma of European/soft pears. A few (Hosui?, Yakumo?) have their own aromas, but most are just great substitutes for water chestnuts: snappy/crunchy and sweet, but lacking flavor. Maybe they should be poached, so that they could at least get flavor from the syrup. Or just use them as a crunchy vegetable in a savory stir fry. As desert fruit, they are quite bad IMHO.
@markiangooley
@markiangooley Жыл бұрын
Hybrid between a hybrid European pear and a hybrid Asian pear, I think. No apple ancestry but looks somewhat more like an apple than a pear.
@erikjohnson9223
@erikjohnson9223 Жыл бұрын
@@markiangooley That might be worthwhile. "Oriental pears" grown in the Southern USA used Asian ancestors to try to get firelight resistance into European pears. Their fruit is usually pretty terrible except for canning/cooking (we called them "potato trees"), though some newer varieties have likely improved. The Xinjiang pear is a cross between pyrifolia, European pears, and a little bit of a Xinjiang native (Pyrus armeniacifolia?) and is supposed to be remarkably good though not widely available (unless in western China maybe; its Mandarin name translates and "fragrant pear" [xiang li?, sorry don't speak that language]; Uyghur probably call it by "pear" (/armut/?) plus the name of the oasis whence it came, but speaking a "splittist" language like Uyghur will probably send you to a concentration camp these days).

I think that if a peach is crisp it is not ripe. They will ripen but not really increase in flavour. You want peaches to be soft, luscious and messy for the best peaches experience. One of the main flavour determinants, apart from variety, is growing conditions. Commercial growers want to maximise appearance, achieve a uniform ideal size and get the best possible yield. This means they need to irrigate their trees to get optimal yield. As a grower of peaches at home I have found that the best flavour is achieved by reducing watering when the peaches are ripening. This concentrates flavours and sweetness.

The white donut peach seem to be more common in both the grocery store and the trees. I can pretty easily find somewhere willing to ship a white donut peach tree. Very few places that have yellow donut peaches ship to me. I ended up buying 4 gold donut peaches from Stark Bros but all the trees were eaten by animals. I love donut peaches when you get lucky and actually find ripe ones available (they always seem to be underripe for some reason). So much easier to eat, and that mild sweet flavour of white peaches is to die for. I'm considering grafting some peach onto a big 'ol plum rootstock that popped up, but unfortunately peaches in the PNW are a nightmare and only a handful of cultivars stand a chance. A local nursery seems to have a decent variety of donut peach, so perhaps one day I'll be growing some. I would totally try that peach pie one and the nectarine too if I could, but generally by default its best to assume that they're not going to work here...

I think the flat peach vs. normal peach difference is (as you mention) mainly because they are sort of "dwarf" varieties. A bit smaller, but same sugar content "concentrated" in it. Also, as some others mentioned, I think they tend to be picked more ripe, and handled a bit more carefully therefore. But I honestly prefer classic peaches, but they *have to* be ripe. I do think flat nectarines taste better than flat peaches, somehow, and I lat white nectarines are what I see most. Best is bought from a stand at the side of a country road, right beside the orchard. Even more classic, on a hot summer August day (southern Ontario here), and you just gorge on peaches in the shade. Oh man. HOWEVER, as you noted... those peaches were not ripe. A crunchy peach is not ripe, not edible. I am sort of surprised how many people do not realize this. I mean, I've seen loads of people eat unripe peaches and then when I ask about how good it tastes, kinda report ho-hum. Well, no duh! Haven't tried the yellow peaches yet, but will keep my eyes open.

I'd heard that the donut varieties of peaches and nectarines were the "original" ones and that the larger ones were cultivated for their size and not for their flavor.

Nope, just a cultivated mutation! They are quite nice, even if I prefer normal peaches.

Same here. I like the round ones but love the flat ones. (gigidi)
