Honestly, Australia has to have THE most beautiful wildlife on the planet. These breath-taking peacock spiders, the incredible marsupials (the bilby's my special favorite), the reptiles, insects - and the BIRDS!!! One of my biggest dreams is to go to Australia and explore nature!! And you can put viewing the aurora borealis on that list, too!

This is beautiful, it is so refreshing to see 'real' spider footage, showing how gentle the male is, and the natural behaviour, so people can see they are just animals and rather cute too. not so keen on music choice, sorry :) Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together and show it to us. More please? Was amazed they're so tiny, your filming was inspired and so clear too! :)

Thanks ! I had a fear of flying and then became a pilot ! It takes a bit of courage to deal with ones fears and it requires a gradual desensitisation, conquering that fear is one of the greatest feelings which often results in turning the object of fear into one of obsession. When I was a young boy I was not immune from fear of spiders either, and by keeping a house spider in a glass jar eventually got over it completely. I hope that these videos will have a similar effect

@Peacockspiderman For me, your films have reminded me of the wonder I haven't felt for years, since watching David Attenborough's Best Work. That awareness of marvellous creatures doing marvellous things.. all around us. These tiny little spiders are phenomenally inventive in their costume n their displays.. heart-warmingly so. A bit of Wonder does me a Power of Good!! Thanks again.. these films have Brightened my Day.. n will certainly be sending around to friends.

This is stunningly beautiful to see. I had never heard of these spiders, was simply looking up spider courtship rituals online as we saw some interesting displays over the weekend in the country. No unusual species, just golden orb weavers and sac spiders, but interesting all the same. Thank you for posting these videos, you're right, too many ppl are scared of spiders. I once was, then I chose to educate myself, now I am an enthusiast.

These creatures look so much like they're smiling, that I'm willing to be they actually are!! There's no scientific proof that spiders don't have emotions, is there? I certainly can see by the relationship between spider owners and their pet spiders that they have the capacity to love and bond!

@MissSuicidalCupcake They are all about 4-5 mm long, so yes, quite small. You might be interested to know that I too had some fear of spiders when I was little. The way I overcame that was by catching one of our house spiders (probably the same you have) and keeping it in a glass jar, just watching it, feeding it with some insects etc. Gradually I lost all my fear and eventually managed to hold it in my hand. It takes a little while, but it worked for me.

@AnjulGray That's because it is a jumping spider. The peacock spider is among the many salticids(jumping spiders) in this world. There are still more to be discovered too. I found one that has a pattern that looks like a "five" that you see on dice. But it turned out that it has already been discovered. I looked it up because I had never seen it before. It was a strange looking spider to me, so I recorded it with my camcorder.

Amazing video, I will be telling some of the jumping spider(salticidae) enthusiests I know on youtube about your videos. These peacock spiders have likenesses in their mating ritual while still being very different in their mating ritual from other jumping spiders I have seen. These are the only ones that I know of that use their third legs to wave and move to catch the female's attention as with other jumpers, they use the front legs.

This species was first described in 1874 by Octavius Pickard-Cambridge and named Salticus volans, because he thought the spider would use its flap-like extensions of the abdomen to glide through the air when it jumps. Doubt that the footage is that old ;)
@Peacockspiderman
@Peacockspiderman 10 жыл бұрын
Actually, this species was just described and named by myself and my collaborator David Hill. We named it Maratus tasmanicus. The one you refer to as the one described by Pickard-Cambridge is Maratus volans, a species you can see in my first video "Peacock Spider"

The abdomen and flaps looks almost exactly like the face of a praying mantis - the flaps are the eyes, while the abdomen has stripes that resemble the front face of some species of mantis.
