I knew they were lucky to have him when he told the camera that disneyland story where he took his wife and kids to see some attractions and was planning to go through with his divorce right after. But when he took Claire and Mitchell to some show about former US presidents, they preached a lesson about perseverance and he decided to tough it out with his wife a while longer, for the sake of his kids. So that they wouldn't have to go through the pain of being children of a broken household. He pushed off the divorce until they were older and better equipped to cope and understand the issue, just so that they could have a happier childhood. That's number 1 dad material, imo. I may have gotten some of the details a bit off, since I'm reciting from memory and it's been a while since I saw that particular episode, but the gist of the story should be mostly correct. The details might be a little off, though.
