One difference you didn't mention - different size. While both are marked as 20L, only the zip model is at this volume at all time. The standard version is smaller and to get to 20L you need to max out the maglatch part of it, and as you also mentioned in your review, it's then not ideal(looks horrible, there are openings for potential lost/thief/rain). So if somebody knows they will most of time use the the full 20L capacity, Zip model is better choice.

Although the 20L standard version packs to 17L it's still larger in size than the 20L zip. I like a smaller bag so I'm stuck with the 15L zip. Anyone have any comments on 'ease of opening' the zip vs standard? Looking for easy access.

there's a piece of very important information you missed out in the video. the everyday backpack comes with 3 dividers, whereas the zip comes with only 2. It's important for anyone with cameras.

Zip is easier to maximize space, both offer quick access from two sides and top. Zip is lighter and a bit more soft and forgiving. I use both but zip is more used. The only thing I wish for zip is that magnet shoulder strap. Zip is function over form, lighter, easier to organize, don’t have so many I forgot where I hide stuff pockets, cheaper and not as fancy as the regular bag. I pack three cameras with lens (including long lens), ND filters and misc. in a 15L zip with quick access to all, I can pack the same in 20L regular but has to reach for the third camera from the top latch risking things falling out. Both bags don’t offer padding at the bottom, so I recommend you buy an additional origami divider place at the bottom not only adds cushion also allows the bag to stand still.

Completely agree regarding strap-magnets. They could have advertised it not as a lite version, but as a lighter (hope it is a nice pun), leaving that neat feature there.

what would you choice if you use them for the school backpack? Zip or another one?

Thanks, this really helped. I like smaller bags and the 20L standard has nice features. the 15L is just narrower and the standard just is so clunky.

At that point you might like the Travel Pack, it's 30L in its most compact form and works great as a camera bag with the camera cubes. Won't be quite as sleek but the additional 15L might come in handy sometimes.

Yes, I know the Travel Pack. Sadly, its laptop compartment shares the same space as your clothes etc. It might be strange in that regard, but I prefer a separate laptop/tech compartment. Otherwise, the Travel Pack would be it. And there are still packing cubes...hmm, I have to reconsider this. And the nice sage green...

@@SandraOrtmann1976 Totally agree, a separate laptop compartment is just so much more relaxing to use. I wouldn't pass on that in a daily carry.

They should make the zip in 30l

Agree. Although a 25L would be perfect for me I think. The Everyday Backpack Zip 20L V2 is already as tall (more or less) as the Everyday Backpack 30L V2. A Zip 30L would just be too tall I think.

Also, you should've mention that the everyday bag is much heavier than the zip (0.5kg difference)

Question for those who owned these... how do you wash or clean these? All of my backpacks so far I can pop in the washing machine inside a washing bag (just to dampen the contact between the metal bits of the bag vs the metal bits inside the washing machine). Can I do that or will I ruin them?

By peak design only makes the 45l travel bag which I already have. I was asking more for short one week trips. I tend to pack all Merino wool. I am trying to decide between the 30l everyday bag and 20l everyday zip.

Weight. I’ll be taking zip exclusively because it’s much lighter. Can’t remember the exact numbers, but even 100g difference without dividers is enough for me to justify.
@liefLeif

Tried both bags in the store, actually didn’t feel the weight difference. The numbers should be 200+ g.

@@liefLeif it's 0.5kg difference, not so small. The everyday bag is a 2.0kg bag. quite heavy.

Seems like the zip bag would be more "waterproof" - if you loaded the one with the maglatch it looks like the sides could push out and let water in? Suppose in rain country might be more of a consideration :-)

That seems almost mean spirited to not include $1 worth of magnets in the other bag to make the straps not flail around. Once again because Peak Design doesn't listen, never forget the most important feature of their bags, for all that money and despite the fact you are going to put thousands of dollars of stuff in it, you can't lock them and secure them properly.

Don't all those magnets wreck the electronics in the bag?

Hey Aaron - so far the magnets on these packs haven't caused any issues with the electronics packed inside, but if anything changes we'll keep you updated on the full reviews. 😊 - Rebecca

Modern electronics are mostly impervious to magnets that are as strong as these. You’d have to get into pretty beefy magnets to wreck say, a hard drive in any meaningful way. Back in the day, it would be problems, but these days, we are blessed to have some pretty robust hardware.

Am I the only one that doesn't like the idea that a bunch of woven in magnets might interact with my camera electronics? If anything a magnet in the vicinity of a memory card doesn't seem brilliant
