Join me for a solo overnight wild camp in the Peak District using a British Army Basha and British Army Bivi (or Bivvy if you prefer!). My chosen rucksack for the trip was the Osprey Rook 65, whuch easily swallows everything needed and is also a very comfortable pack.
if you want to check out pricing for this pack:
Osprey Rook 65 - amzn.to/3kjV6vv
The British Army Basha & Bivi are easily available from army surplus suppliers on e-Bay.
If you want a bit more info on this Basha setup, take a look at my earlier setup video: • British Army Basha Wil...

As always, many thanks for watching!

I have always used a tent on camp sites paying £12 to £18 a night and having to pre book as well. Bivi and Basha camping really appeal to me. Cannot wait to try it, you inspired me.

Definitely a Marathon! and the basha's a good job except when the midges attack, especially the man eating Scottish Midge.
@DesGreene

Yes, the midges can be a problem (not usually as bad down here). I've also got a Dutch Army bivi that has a net built in, but still wouldn't be much fun hiding away from midges in such a small space 😁 Thanks for watching👍

Thanks Doug. I've not used a DD tarp as yet, but they seem really popular. I'd imagine you could get a bit more headroom if needed as it's larger than the basha. Cheers for watching!

Beautiful set up Des, think you are right re condensation it’s just the way it is. These Iron Age dudes knew their stuff, good fort. Lovely sunrise. It’s a shame you don’t have the free right to roam in England.

Oh that was a great little outing! 😁 I think I used the British Army bivi on that one. But wasn't forecast for rain, and not too many midges about. None of this army kit is really light, but it works and will last forever with a bit of care. Look forward to seeing what adventures you have planned Taff! 👍👍

Cracking wild camp , stunning spot as well, regarding condensation, I've done camps when you think it'll be a issue,and it hasn't, then other times, dripping off the inside when it shouldn't be, just one of them things sometimes, I get it more on coastal camps, dips in the surrounding landscape etc, really enjoying your videos, good health and safe travels my friend, cheers craig

Hi Craig! Yes, I suppose there's so many variables.....moisture level, ground and air temperature, wind, and the tarp setup itself. I was quite surprised on this one as the setup is so open to the front and sides. Was still a memorable camp though! Amazing sunrise! 😁 Cheers for watching. Will check out some of your vids asap👍

Hello Des I'm a Yank from over the pond and I watched your video to see how you packed your Rook. We look to be about the same age and I enjoyed your video, very nice. I am heading out in the morning for a spot called Savage Gulf natural area in Tennessee to have my first go at hammocking on an overnight. I've been a tenter backpacking since I was a kid but my back is not a good as old so trying to sleep in the air. That would not have worked well where you were of course. Why do these packs feel so much heavier than when I was a kid? LOL!
@DesGreene
@DesGreene 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, thanks for looking in! Not sure if this video showed how I pack the Rook very well. I usually pack my shelter (tent or tarp/bivi) in the bottom compartment. Main compartment I have a large dry sack with sleeping bag and sleeping mat at the bottom. Lighter stuff like clothes and a down jacket above. In the top compartment I put stuff I need easy access to - 1st aid kit, snacks etc. I've got video that I'm just editing at the moment with my initial thoughts on the Rook. I'd be interested to hear what you think. Hope your trip goes well and your back holds up OK! 👍

Been practicing in the garden with a tarp like the idea. When there is moisture in the air it does collect on the tarp. Saving up for a lightweight bivvy. Just throwing a tent footprint over my bag and moisture collects on that two. Would not chance it away from home though. Did your bag stay dry 🔥
@DesGreene
@DesGreene 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kenneth. If the air temperature is cold, I do find you get some condensation on the inside of the tarp. I suppose it's a bit like single skin tent in that regard. But if you are also using a bivvy, that keeps any moisture from getting your sleeping bag wet. Put a bin liner or cover over your backpack & boots and you're fine in Spring/Summer. Thanks for watching! All the best👍

Hi there! I see from your other comments that you found my video "what is a British Army Basha?" so hopefully you have the dimensions now? I'm not sure on availability in the US. They are widely available on Ebay in the UK, but I imagine postage costs would be quite high due to the weight.
