Now that's putting a new tent to the test. Great demo video. Other pluses: looks like it has good head room for a solo tent, and the bright yellow interior certainly adds a cheery ambiance even in such foul weather. The vestibule looks like it proved well protected and convenient for cooking, too. BTW, I came to this video from my YT recommendation list, probably because of all the Dean Reed videos of the PD that I've watched. So howdy from da (Wi)sconsin Nort' Woods.

Pat, I will suggest you check out the Delta Ground Anchors. Their stainless steel ones are crazy heavy but the yellow ones from plastic work very well even in extreme windy conditions and due to their shape it's not so much about their length as much as the angle at which it's being pulled. They're cheap too! They are a pain to carry because they are so big!

The Hilleberg Soulo looks like a very good tent! If it can keep the midges out I'd recommend it to my chums. I pitched camp on the slopes of Mullach Nan Corrian (Mamores) one evening only to have a few sheep for company. They used the tent as a shelter from the wind. However they provided some stability and warmth. They had a fright in the morning though...

What a brilliant video Pat. Fair play to you, I had a Soulo previously but swapped it for a Unna as it is 10cm longer and with me being 6'4" the extra length is most welcome. Got your self a bombproof tent there mate. I put the shorter pole in first then the 2 longer poles over the top. Stops you getting the ridge in the umbrella piece. Also pull the umbrella piece as tight as possible via the 4 straps, stops it flapping about in the wind. Hope you longer out of your XL Y pegs, used mine once and bent 4 of them. Maybe I was too rough lol. ATB Mark.

Heya Patrick love your vids. I watch a lot of your escapades. And as I live in Australia (but born a Brummy) its interesting to see the differences. Lol. I was looking at your corner guys, and was wondering why you tie them to the poles and the tent. I was thinking (without instructions) that i would only have tied them to the tent, and let the shock cord poles do their work. As this setup appears to rigidly tie the tent to the poles at the guy connections. Rather than allow some flex for the wind. Just wondering. Cheers and keep up your amazing adventures. And i always get hungry watching you cook,

I don't think you should unstake the guy lines until you fully de-clip the poles during high wind.
@geraldhenrickson74724 жыл бұрын
The main guy lines wrap the pole and ARE the "clips" for much of the tent body. No choice other than to release the downwind side/end first. when its this windy, there sometimes is no good method to take it down.
@StevenMannSlioch9 жыл бұрын
Hilleberg instructions say insert the short pole last which I take to mean on the outside. However, on their own pitching instructions video, they put the short pole on the underside. This is very confusing. I would like to know for sure which is correct and why. There seems to be two considerations, strength and the support of the canopy. I used to have a Caravan Keb back in the late 80s and early 90s which was designed by Bo Hilleberg. It was a good tent until the flysheet degraded and tore. I tend not to leave my tents pitched for days on end these days - usually just an overnight pitch so UV degredation is less of an issue. Great video - probably the best on I have seen on the Soulo. Thank you for sharing.
@patrickdickinson64929 жыл бұрын
Steven Mann Hi Steven,glad you enjoyed the video must admit when i first put soulo up I followed the instructions and put the short pole up last, I did,nt realise untill you mentioned it that hilleberg,s video did it the otherway round. I emailed hilleberg this afternoon and they replied straight away saying people put the poles up either way as if there is no definate way. CHEBSOOT further up my log prefers putting shorter pole in first and with Hillebergs video doing it this way might be way to go. I,am going to try both methods and see which I prefere,Thanks for watching and for the info, Pat

Hi Pat, what are your thoughts on this tent, 4 years later? I have a Hilleberg Enan, which is a superbly made (and lightweight) tent, which is ideal due to general weight of all of my camera kit, etc. Only issue is it's single pole, so it's flappy in windy weather.

+craig paisley Hi Craig must of missed your message or would of replied sooner, yes the low profile tents are good and have there advantages, I liked the Soulo especially if weather is stormy or wet as it gives reasonable living space. Good video, what is your summer tent?
@patrickdickinson64928 жыл бұрын
+Stephen Kennedy Hi Stephen I sometimes use the Soulo in summer as lightweight and roomy enough for one depend on the weather. I tend to camp out using bivi bags a lot more in summer, I have a Rab ridge Raider hooped bivvy very lightweight and comfortable. I also have a basic gortex bivvy bag which I use on long walks when I want a really lightweight and simple overnight camp. Hope useful and thanks for watching Pat

Thanks that was very helpful! I am new to camping and hill walking, and the gear can be expensive, so I don't want to make too many mistakes

IO bought a Tarra which is like a mansion for one person. the extra 5 pounds is worth carrying. IMHO
@patrickdickinson64927 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob sometimes that extra room is invaluable especially in winter when you have all the extra gear and spend a lot of the time in the tent. Hope you enjoy the new tent, all the best Pat

Hi Pat what size stuff sack do you use the pack down the Soulo ?
@patrickdickinson64925 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael it really packs down small. Can,t remember size in lites but about 8 inch diameter by about 8 inch deep with a bit of compacting really goes to a small size, all the best Pat

stick yer head out! lol. I wear earplugs on occasion for the noise but try not to fully block my hearing/safety awareness to much and/or too often. Just the foam type I use

I'm confused about the Hilleberg tent range. Why didnt you get the Akto? Regards.
@patrickdickinson64929 жыл бұрын
PigHandButtah Hi ,i went for the Soulo rather than the Akto as I wanted the tent for winter camping and to be able to take snow loading and stand up to high winds. The akto is a great tent and lighter but I think the Soulo is stronger and more a 5 season tent
@waddewel9 жыл бұрын
Patrick Dickinson confused 5 season ?
@patrickdickinson64929 жыл бұрын
waddewel Hi there, my interpretation of 5 season is that 4 season can be used all year including winter, where 5 season can be used all year but is designed to take high winds and not collapse under from heavy snow fall. The akto is 4 season but I would rather be in the soulo if there is a foot of snow on top. Thanks Pat

Hi Patrick tx I DO know where that is it's a blooming windy spot great place to test a tent as long as the test goes well. Might be a bit miserable if the tent turns out to be no good but that one passed with flying colours. Tx again mate are you having a bit of a lay off? looking forward to more vids.

@patrickdickinson64928 жыл бұрын
+Solo Bikepacker Hi the main camera I have been using is a Sony Alpha 37 DSLT, it takes great video main reason I bought it about 2 years ago. Often get a lot of wind noise from built in microphone so I used a remote mic sometimes on camera or next to me when filming with a muffler fitted cut out most of wind noise. Thanks Pat

@patrickdickinson64927 жыл бұрын
Daniël de Vree Hi Daniel, the Soulo is a good test for one person. I thanks you would be Ok as we rarely sleep straight. but with legs tucked up. If you could try one for size first would be best Hope helpful Pat

Thanks for the quick reply Patrick, I'll try one very soon. Today I tried the new Wild Country Helm 1, terrible tent for a tall (Dutch) person.

Do you permission to camp in the Peak District?
@patrickdickinson64929 жыл бұрын
Lee Stanley Hi Lee As with most wild camping in England you are not supposed to camp in the Peak District without permission. Most people who wild camp are responsible people who camp discreetly and leave no trace when they leave in the morning. it would be difficult to find out who owns a bit of moorland and who would you ask? anyway thats my thoughts and thanks for watching, Pat

Removing a guyline to secure it to your backpack while taking tent down looked dodgy, tent almost got flattened. Id have dropped the top of the tent before touching the guylinez, no need to secure it anyhow as pinned down by the pegs on the groundsheet.
@patrickdickinson649211 ай бұрын
ground round here is very soft would not depend on ground sheet pegs, one secure guyline suits me
