This weeks wander was a nostalgic return to a classic route that I've no doubt many people watching will have done... Kinder Scout's western edge from Hayfield. It is such a great walk that I'd have to say is up there in my top 5 Peak District wanders. The route starts at the Bowden Bridge Quarry car park and then climbs up to Kinder via the Kinder Reservoir and William Clough. On my way across to Kinder Low I visit part of the wreckage of 2 Canadian Sabre Jets, A spot held sacred by the Aetherius society and Kinder Downfall. On the way down I visit the notoriously hard to find Kinder Low Cavern before arriving back at the car. This route is jam packed full of great sights and points of interest and its a must for any visitor to the Glorious Peak District.

Dean. Thanks so much from Atlanta for this wonderful video . Will show this to my 87yo dad who, as a boy, lived for a year and half in the house visable at 2:24 (his father tended the reservoir). His memories of endlessly exploring the Kinder Scout area are among his fondest of growing up in England and he will love seeing it again! It's a pity that here in the US such direct public access to lands is not the norm as it is in the UK.

Not hiked to Kinder from Hayfield yet but it certainly looks a great route to take. Definitely on my list to do once lockdown is over. TFS Andy

Thanks Alan, it was such a great feeling to be up on the moors again and breathing in that fresh cold air. I sat for a while having lunch at Sandy Heys and just took it all while breathing deeply, it was good to be back :-)

Great video again Dean. Was up kinder over Easter with truly spectacular weather. Wondered about on the moor and managed to find the true summit of Kinder. We looked at heading down Crowden brook but it looked proper dangerous (going up maybe easier) so headed up Grindslow knoll and down Sheepfold which is a great way down with good views. Next trip out will be Hayfield as I love water falls. Cheers.

Hello, I completed the Hayfield route today after watching your excellent video.. William Clough was a challenge.. Weather was abysmal as far as mist and fog goes.. But it was a great 18km.. Found the actual summit of kinder scout and startled a couple of black grouse... You were correct, in poor weather and visibility as it was today you need a map and compass, also to find your way back out.. Great day.. Cheers..

Thanks for watching Dave, it's a fantastic route isn't it. One of my favourites in the Peaks that for sure. The walk to find the official summit is pretty tricky without good navigation skills when the weather turns bad. All the best, Dean.

Thanks for this video - not been to the Peak District since the early 70s and often think about the school hike to Kinder Scout, visiting Edale, Tideswell, Bakewell, Castleton etc. I loved it annd maybe one day will be able to go back. I live near Dartmoor which is the next best place apart from Grizedale and surrounding areas!! Will be watching your other videos when I can. Thanks again

Great video! I'm going to watch your others too (this is my first one!). I visited Hayfield and the surrounding area three times between 2006 - 2008 and I've wanted to go back ever since, but for various reasons I haven't been able to do so. It's such a special place. Last night we booked a 4 night break in the Peak District, so I'll be heading back very soon! Can't wait to walk in this stunning landscape again.

Well watching your video inspired me to give it a go and have an overnight wild camp up there. Looking forward to getting through your other videos. Its good to see how much emphasis you put on the landscape you're in and not so much on gear and cooking like some other videos out there tend to over do.

Hi Matt, there is a great website / app called "Meet Up". There are lots of groups going out walking on there with different interests, photography group etc etc. Or I have friends who have gone on walk weekends in the Peaks with a company called "Large Outdoors" they have walk leaders who do all the hard work for you with navigation and I believe they offer navigation courses too. Hope that helps Matt. Atb Dean

Hello Dean. Excellent video. Would this be the Pack Horse Way that you are walking on? I kept horses at Tunstead Farm in the late 60's and we did a trek on the Pack Horse Way from where you started this walk. Apparently we were the first horses (about 6 of us) to do this for many years at the time. ( a newspaper was interested in us doing this and took our photo but I dont remember which newspaper it was : ( ) I sadly didnt manage to make the whole journey on my horse (she was slipping dreadfully around William Clough) so its very interesting to see what I missed. I have been watching your other Peak District videos too and find them fascinating as they show places I went on my treks on horse back when I was a young girl. We hit many a boggy area on our treks. I remember once going across a bog on one of those narrow wooden footpath thingys and mine and another horse slid off! Thankfully we got out ok but we and the horses where stained orange for awhile. I will be watching more of your journeys to other places too now as they are fascinating! Thank you for sharing. Sherry Gorman-Rickard from Malvern, beautiful Hills here too of course but not quite so high!
@DeanRead
@DeanRead 8 жыл бұрын
+Steve R Thanks for watching the videos Sherry. I'd love to do some horse riding around that area too, we haven't been out riding for around a year or so. I don't think my daughter would be very interested in tackling any hills with me but I'm sure she'd change her mind if it was on horse back :-) I've never visited the Malvern Hills, i've seen them from the motorway but I must make a point of stopping off soon.

Great route Dean. Walked this last Sunday with some top weather... the steep bit at Kinder Low was a killer but fun! lol! Going to try and get across Kinder scout bogs again soon... last time I tried it was wet and boggy and my walking pole was going in a good third in places... decided to retreat! I got across once before, more through luck though... do you have a particular route from grinds brook to kinder falls to avoid having to scramble up and down some of the bigger groughs?
@DeanRead
@DeanRead 7 жыл бұрын
+Ian Bagley Thanks for watching Ian. Sadly I don't think there are any easy routes across, it's either boggy or you are climbing out of the groughs. It's even wetter up there since Moors for the Future have done some work to retain the moisture up there. All the best, Dean
