Peaking: Coco Nogales

Preparation is important in most walks of life. But in XXL surfing, it’s dire. In Peaking, we explore how the world’s best big wave surfers get physically and mentally prepared to tackle the world’s biggest waves. This episode features the unofficial mayor of Puerto Escondido: Mr. Carlos “Coco” Nogales.
Born in the mountains of Mexico, Coco made his way to the streets then eventually to the beach - which is just where he belongs. He’s since risen to surf fame and is the Mexican ambassador to the XXL community. Today, we watch him get ready to surf the biggest swell of the summer at his favourite stretch of sand. We see the trials, tribulations and eventual triumph of life in the unpredictable sea.

Coco soy de puerto ángel y así como tú tuviste muchas carencias igualmente las tuve yo. Pocas veces tuve la oportunidad de ir a puerto escondido por qué no había cómo hacerlo. Por cuestiones económicas. Pero siempre había oportunidades, un aventon con la banda, llevando turistas y todo eso. No te conozco pero puedo decirte que eres una persona noble y humilde. Ese don muy pocos lo tienen en la vida. Cuídate mucho y me identifico mucho con tu historia de vida . Viví en puerto ángel Oaxaca toda mi vida hasta los 18 años y tuve que partir. Ahora tengo 18 años en Chicago Estados Unidos. Gracias por poner a Oaxaca en alto . Cuídate mucho y que Dios te bendiga a ti, a tu familia y a toda la gente.

If you guys would get an oxygen cartridge, similar to an ordinary CO2 cartridge, to inflate a strap-on bag with a pull cord, you wouldn't drown in a two or three waver hold down. You already wear inflatable vests, so fill them with a breathable oxygen-rich mix. Just attach a tube with a pull cord valve. Even getting rolled, you should be able to reach your chest to yank it and get one good extra breath.

Coco i'm from Puerto Angel and just as you had many shortcomings I had them too. I rarely had the opportunity to go to Puerto escondido because there was no way to do it. For economic reasons. But there were always opportunities, a ride with friends, taking tour with tourists and all that. I don't know you but I can tell you that you are a noble and humble person. That gift very few have in life. Take care of yourself and I identify a lot with your life story. I lived in Puerto Angel Oaxaca all my life until I was 18 and I had to leave. I have 18 years living in Chicago, United States. Thank you for putting Oaxaca up. Take care of yourself and God bless you, your family and all that people around you. Oh come on. He wasn't jealous, just frustrated about the ski. He tries to limit the stress as much as possible but like he said, when you're family is counting on you and surfing is your job, there's always going to be some stress. Amateur surfers like myself don't have to worry about that, although I've certainly been pissed off at the ocean many time. I always come back to her though
