Ok so the tensions. The Shelby family are Irish/Romani (they speak both Rokka and Shelta). They have settled and are no longer nomadic so the Lee family (nomadic gypsies) no longer see them as real gypsies and call them didicoy. But every other British people will see them as second-class citizens because they are gypsies. At this time the Irish are also seen as second-class citizens because they are fighting a geurilla war against The British Empire for independence. Italians are hated by everyone, including Irish and Gypsies, and often called wops. Italy was originally on the side of Germany and Austria-Hungary in the First World War but later changed sides. Then you have class distinctions. Winston Churchill is upper-class, his family were Dukes of Marlborough and at this time he was Secretary of State for War, a cabinet minister in the government. Campbell and Grace are middle-class, likely land-owning Irish planters or gentry. Everyone else is working-class. The Class System in Britain is based on birth and not money like in The US, so the class you are born as cannot be changed and will affect you your whole life, even moreso in 1919. The idea of someone like Tommy even speaking to Winston Churchill would be unheard of. Even if they met somewhere.

The Irish Gypsies stuff is so interesting, because they do have roots that coalesce with the Romani like being travelers but they arent actually Romani so they speak Shelta (which is english and irish gaelic mixed together) instead of the Romani language.

A soldier's experience from WWI was horrific. Search for shell shock WWI, and you can see some real footage of it. Thomas was in a group which digged a tunnel underneath the battlefield, and over to the enemy line. When they were right under the German trenches, they were supposed to put explosives, light on the fuse and crawl back to safety. Sometimes Germans and Brits did dig to each other by misstake, and horrible and claustrofobic battles took place, underground. Now you have some context.

The Romani, or the Romani Gyspy, or “Travellers” have been present in Great Britain and Ireland since the 1500’s and many British and Irish people have Romani blood. The Shelby’s in this show, although from Birmingham (England) are supposed to be Romani and Irish descended, as were many working class people both today and at that time. I think all you need to know regarding the Romani in this show is that they are considered "outsiders" and do have a reputation for criminality and being superstitious. In the show that reputation seems to be generally well earned. They tend to look more like the populations of the places where they live (more so than looking Indian, despite their origins being in India...more than a millennia ago). They'd have been in the UK for centuries and they do occasionally mix with the locals. The Shelbys are themselves blood related to the Romani, but not full blooded (hence the Lee's making a crack about Thomas's mother). And, by the way, good as it is, this show gets SO much better. It's a real treat getting to relive it with this channel.

The show is set in a period of history that doesn't get nearly as much attention as it deserves, there was *so* much going on. A gang of Brummies (folk from Birmingham) with a little Traveler heritage to get the prejudices stirring, navigating post-war turmoil with the English dominion over Ireland boiling over (IRA Fenians struggling for Irish independence being a chief suspect in the theft of arms), the vitality of socialist, communist, anarchist, and fascist politics on the continent and the British Isles (a political fervour that would result in the Spanish Civil War 1936-39 would draw volunteers from all over the world sympathetic to the political leanings of the various factions involved), the huge changes going on in Russia (the White Russians will play a part in the series going forward), and the indelible mark left by The Great War on all of Europe and its peoples. It's an absolute powderkeg, and as much as it tends to get overshadowed by the Great War and the Second World War that bookend it, for dramatic tension and opportunity you would struggle to find more fertile soil than the interwar period

In Britain there are Roma gypsies who originated in the east and migrated to europe in the middle ages. There were also Irish travellers who have a nomadic lifestyle (nowadays they are mostly settled but still identify themselves as Travellers). The Shelbies father was part Roma and part Irish Traveller, their mother was Roma. Family blood and connections are very important to both cultures and feuds between families were/are common. One way to resolve the is through arranged marriages as you'll soon see future episodes. The Shelby family are not long settled, (their grandmother was born in a tent, their mother in a narrow canal barge) they have all known life on the road ( well, maybe not Aida and Finn) and can still speak Shelta, irish traveller slang, ride a horse bare back, hitch a wagon and observe the funeral right to cremate their dead with all their possession in their barrel top wagon Johnny Dog is a good exsmple of an Irish Travellet who is well connected with Roma Gypsies and can speak both languages. The historicdl period was very frought with many men and boys lost in a horrible war and those who survived often suffering from "shell shock" . Those who managed to go back to a workin life suffeted starvation wages and terroble working conditions so working people joined unions or left parties and in the background the Bolshevic revolution ha just happened in Russia and the Irish Republican Army were fighting the British and Ulster loyalist forces for Irish independence. Not to mention all the other criminal gangs that Tommy Shelby haf to deal with: the scottish Billy Boys; the Sabini, Solomons and the Titanics in London; the Black Country Boys closr to home. Yea, no, a lot of people with guns, blades, explosives and military experience to contend with. Just for more contest aunt Polly is the Shelbies father's sisyer and incle Charlie is their mother's brother.

Their mother was a Lee who settled, right ? Hence the dig at his mum being didicoy. I'm not super certain Charlie in all of this. Did he grow up on barges too ? Was that perceived as settled ? Does that mean his parents went from living with the rest of the Lees on the road to living on canals ? We do know from S1E1 that Tommy's grandfather was "a king" so why did he choose to go be on canals ? Or was canal work considered a normal part of Roma nomadisme ? I'm kinda sad we didn't see more Roma/Traveller plotlines in the show. I'm wondering how Esme settling is perceived, or the linguistic heritage of the family, since we don't see them speak Roma or Shelta outside of tension situations where they're used as cryptolects. He does take off with Charles for a bit, but even then I felt like that arc didn't go as far as it could have been.

Gypsy(not a prefered term anymore) in a UK context usually refers to the travelling community that originates in Ireland but as there is free movement between the UK and Eire there is no barrier to them moving back and forth to the UK; at this point in time in the show the UK includes all of Ireland and had for over a century. Travellers are usually Catholic, which also sets them somewhat apart from the meanstream UK society of the time, although Irish immigration into mainland Britain had changed this to a degree by the early 1900s Anti-traveler prejudice is pretty much the only racial prejudice still acceptable in polite society in the UK, so it runs pretty deep.

From context clues it seems like he (Arthur) was boss before the war, but that prior to the start of the series, the brothers agreed Tommy would be boss. I admittedly don't know a lot about Roma history, but one thing I did learn about that kind of stuck with and gave me some context in this show. That was about how, like the Jews, Roma people were an ethnic minority and also victims of mass genocide during the Holocaust of WWII. Similar built up ill will and terrible racism existed towards them in Europe at this time. Because of this show I did go and learn about Birmingham a bit. It, like most of northern England, is considered very working-class with factories being the city's main resource. The BSA factory they keep talking about, where every one works and where the guns were stolen from, was/is a real factory mainly producing munitions and motorcycles. It was actually one of Great Britain's main weapons producers. So much so that Birmingham was targeted a lot by the German bombings in WWII. Which is also why most of this show isn't even shot in Birmingham because all the old streets that looked like that got bombed out of existence there

They are looked down upon as they did not have social security numbers and no history which is big in England as everyone powerful is usually from a old noble family house. Each family has a hierarchy and the world they lived in was different from most of regular society. This series to best describe it would be watching Tommy try to make a name for himself and his family and be more than what most considered "scum" of society. Which yeah, at the time there were armies of millions pitted against each other. World War I started at a time of fervent nationalism and Europe hadn’t been at war for awhile so when it started, ALOT of boys and men enlisted to fight in it for King/Kaiser/Tsar/Emperor and country. They almost saw it as some grand adventure really. So a man choosing not to fight in it would’ve been a rather huge deal for the people of Europe since almost everyone else would’ve. Also the term “gypsy” is considered a slur these days, they prefer Roma or Romani or Travellers in a British context, meaning people that live in camps and not the city . I love how much subtext y’all pick up on, there’s a lot of politics involving the Irish Republican (independence) movement that comes up in the show. In a lot of ways the “red right hand” in the theme song refers to the Ulster Brigade, British loyalists meant to tamp down Irish independence movements. It’s one of the main symbols on their flag. That’s why Tommy threatens to give guns to the Irish if they don’t bow to his demands.

darlings. the Shelbys are war veterans, they fough in WW1 with the british army in the france front and manage to survive the war and come back to england. in the period post WW1 all the vets who survived were highly respected in England, that's why the burning of the kings pictures by british veterans was so alarming that even churchill got mad at it, because if someone as respected as veterans are mad at you or your goverment, then you know you did something wrong. Also the Romani or gypsies are a minority racial group in europe and in england, many people hate them or fear them out of old stereotipes, like they do black magic and put curses or that they rob and kill and them just move their home anywhere else. During WW2, many european gypsies from the eastern front were sent to concentration and extermination camps alongside with jews and lgbt people of that time.

I don't think anybody is mad at you for not knowing the history or thinking of you being ignorant in a bad way. To be curious and ask questions is a good trait. The gypsies in this series are not Romani gypsies, they're from Irish descent. Despite them being prevalent in Peaky Blinders they in fact make up a very small minority of the country. According to the 2021 census 0.12% of the population of England and Wales identified as gypsies or Irish travellers. Romani travellers do exist in the UK, but usually in media such as in this series and in the film Snatch they tend to be Irish travellers. Although the series references some real historical background to some events of the time, much of the series uses a lot of heavy artistic license. The Peaky Blinders were a real gang, but the timeline of the series is off in respect to the years they operated, which was about 30 years before the events in this first series. Razor blades in the peaked caps, another artistic liberty. I'm not saying nobody did that, someone probably did, but it's a conceit for the show. Billy Kimber's gang was also real and he also controlled racecourses. Tommy Shelby is a fictional character. Although the show creates a great atmosphere to help make you feel what it may have been like from the 1920s and into the 1930s, and does record some of the major historical events of the time, it probably has more in common with the spirit of a story like Robin Hood which is another fictionalised tale within a historical backdrop.

The word "Pikey" is a derogatory term because it originates from "Turnpike" which is a random toll road. The connections are that gypsies would rob you when they crossed you on the road

Loving you guys getting into the show and love history myself so heres my idea of how to explain the major contexts you may enjoy along side, After the First war Britain was still in charge of the while island of Ere and were fighting withe the Marxist IRA who had the support of majority catholic Irish folks, The inspector is from the North of Ireland and a Protestant with a heavy Ulster accent a loyalist to the king and the minority who were fiercely anti Irish emancipation (think imagine fighting the Taliban in Alaska and what that would do to US politics). So Protestant Vs Catholics are a huge theme in this era. Roma peoples like the Lee;s were largely not christian, or Catholics with lots of superstitions and rituals that made them very much othered by the rest of Britain (lower population size at this time meant there was alot more places the Roma could nomadically roam in Uk too). A heavy back drop to the whole series is the Communist revolution in Russia seeing the execution of their King, and so the idea of Red Scare really hit hard the Southern elites in London with the fear of similar things happening in England like mass strikes and the end of the aristocracy. Also a lil geography can be helpful, Birmingham is i the north where as the rich and powerful men in Westminster is in the more affluent south (imagine Washington DC vs Michigan), the Northern cites were the manufacturing base of England with huge docks and factories expanding as well as the coal mines, the poor working conditions and salaries saw large amount of riots and strikes from veterans who felt mistreated by the country the fought and saw first hand friends die for. Hopefully this helps.and in terms of slurs, the one i didn't hear you discuss was Fenians which is a slur for catholic irish, and is still used today. I hope this helps with some context but with that in play most of the actions taken can be mapped onto other gangster stories where its usually people from minorities like Chinese, Italians, Roma and Jews that end up taking up organised crime due to their discrimination forcing them into unsavory industries to survive.

On surface level without looking into it just going off my experience in the UK, I always interpreted the gypsy stuff as being fairly face value: the Shelby's are mentioned a few times as having some gypsy heritage, it gets brought up a few times later in the this season I think by Polly. People like Billy Kimber don't care that this makes up only some of their heritage, in a similar way to how racists are in most of the world when it comes to how they treat mixed race people. I hope that explains why when you say "they all seem English" when talking about the Shelbys you are both right and wrong, and just aren't seeing it from the racists perspective - which obviously isn't a bad thing. The Lees still seem to be very much travellers and when they use the term 'black blood' that is referring to the fact they are full/true Romany gypsies. I will say I think that there's also lot of connotations to the term 'black blood' and travellers/gypsies of the New Forrest in particular as that historically is the area where many romani resided though I couldn't help you on the deeper cultural significance of that as I don't know though I am sure many others have deeper insight. Hope that helps.

Added to this, for example paying attention to variables like Catholicism & the black madonna etc.; how there are parallel activities, that sometimes get interwoven and yet often run differently than the "standard" beliefs, practices, verbiage.
@lgrcallum
@lgrcallum Ай бұрын
@@robertjohnson-benYochanan Oh yeah actually I am curious about that, is it more common for Catholicism to be practiced, or is it just as likely that gypsies can be protestant? Obviously parallel to or interwoven with their more traditional practices/beliefs?

Gypsy isn't actually a slur in the UK if used with proper understanding and sensitivity. Of course if you're *using* it in a derogatory context, that can still be offensive and any traveler will pick up on that instantly. "P*key", however, is always offensive regardless of context.

the horse most likely had an infection in its leg and at this point in time it would've been very expensive to treat it if possible as well as its a racehorse so very few would spend even more money trying to cure it when there's a possibility that it might not even work plus most injuries to a horse's leg is practically a death sentence

the romani people in the UK and peaky blinders are more defined by their lifestyle rather than current central/eastern roma people who are usually defined by the color of their skin and called the same way also gypsy is considered a derogatory term now too, i doubt anyone will give you a hard time over it but probably be careful how you use it

**no spoilers but please read** - Y'all are in for a wild ride with this show and it only gets better, now we just gotta get y'all to react to more of these types of shows more quickly lmao. Also PLEASE at least consider reacting to "The Patriot" the TV Series NOT the movie. It is one of the best TV series ever created but is also the most underrated so there's like zero reactions to it on youtube and it will never win any polls because no one knows about it. It's similar to Barry but way funnier yet also sort of more realistic and just much better overall with more action or story depth and less sort of 'filler' drama stuff that seems like it was just thrown in to Barry to take up time and doesn't make sense with the storyline which was my only issue with Barry. Also "The Terminal List" is very underrated and just as good as the patriot but its incredibly realistic because its about a Navy SEAL and the book the show is based on is written by a real Navy SEAL who actually saw combat so he puts an emphasis on realism in the book and obviously the TV series and some of the actors were also former military and they had a bunch of former Special Operations guys on set to guide them into more realism. It's just all around great. Neither of those shows have hardly any reactions to them on KZbin and they almost never win any polls on other channels Patreons solely because people don't know about them and I swear to y'all that if yall just watched the first episode of each of them and released it to youtube as a pilot the comments would be universally asking for more of them. The Patriot has like 3 or 4 seasons but its over now and had a good finale so I would react to it first since The Terminal List has been scheduled for more seasons but with the strikes is still working on its second season Either way thanks for cranking out the reactions, most people don't realise how much work actually goes into making any type of content for youtube and how long and hard it is to learn editing and edit all the footage then upload etc. Also thanks for being genuine, most reaction channels either fake/dramatize their reaction or they only see one side of things or make things political or whatever but y'all rarely do any of that and even then it at least seems genuine so I appreciate it
