I love this episode as it's very loosely based on a real assassination carried out in June 1922, that being the killing of former chief of the Imperial General Staff, Sir Henry Wilson. Wilson was shot dead on the doorstep of his Belgravia home in London by two London-based IRA men. His killing essentially triggered the Irish Civil War as the British government was outraged and forced the pro-Treaty government to deal with the anti-Treaty IRA in Ireland, who they believed were behind the shooting. Obviously, Peaky Blinders went more conspiratorial, which is that the pro-Treaty side was in cahoots with the British intelligence service to carry out a false flag. Also, the Red Right Hand is the emblem of the Ulster Volunteer Force, a unionist paramilitary launched in 1913. The movement faded away during the First World War but was reformed in 1919-20. The show alludes to UVF members having fought at the Somme with the 36th Ulster Division when Tommy asks the UVF men if they served. It's another interesting historical tidbit.

May has had access to the best things in life and now realizes all of that is empty without someone who thrills you to share it with. She isn't afraid of scandal or damaged pride or being dragged through the mud because she has had the unique lesson of learning what is important and what isn't. She lives without fear which is very attractive in anyone but I'd say extraordinary for a woman to have access to that knowledge, especially a woman from such a life of opulence. The wealthy usually travel farther away from enlightenment. When everything comes easy nothing has value.

She brings him peace, or as he says "He can't hear the shovels" when he's with her.

Cause Tommy/Grace didn't have the same chemistry as Tommy/May. I knew he'd pick Grace, too, but I desperately hoped May would win out because shes roughly 1000x more interesting to watch than Grace. Even the writers of season 3 understood that Grace was less interesting...

These are really enjoyable, and I'm grateful for the convo about things my friends/family are tired of discussing with me. :). As for the debate here, I don't think Tommy is even torn at all between the women. His entire energy changes when Grace is around - his face goes soft somehow. He enjoys May, for sure. But even when he first sleeps with May, he is compelled to call Grace right away - a vulnerability that is a step beyond for him. And I think something changes in him regarding his will to live after Grace claims her feelings - it's why he gets so anxious, I think. Suddenly there are stakes that he didn't feel before... I love May, and it's just that you can love lots of people but really for whatever reason being in love is that rare something more.

Hello ladies, I gotta say this is the first time I’ve left a comment for y’all and I’ve spent hours watching y’all’s content here. So from my point of view as a 46 year old man, with 2 children , and a wife of 22 years now, on the Mae and Grace perspective I honestly think that nothing has changed between women and men since that era honestly. As far as what attracts each to the opposite sex, and don’t know if it’ll ever change to be honest , I just think that those certain attributes will always remain the same no matter what era of history we’re in. But just to give my personal opinion in this scenario , you hear Mae say exactly what attracts both of them to Tommy, and she even says it out loud “ to feel alive again, just like you “ Well okay, I can’t speak to a woman’s point of view so I can’t say if that’s the truth or not , but from my pov I absolutely agreed with y’all and could see how Tommy would be going through a conflict over both of them UNTIL…………. He delivered the line, I’m planning on getting married!! From that one line I knew exactly who it was, with no exceptions. And I don’t do spoilers so I’ll leave my 2nd half of my opinion after the next episode ladies. but I do so enjoy this point in the series just because of the conversations that ensue and how each reactor reaches their opinion. @ecxstasy3474 ай бұрын
I think the notion they made about saying “the show is for the girls” is how the romantic dialogues appeal to the female notion of love (transcendental love) or the female gaze, which seemed to me to be more predominant in scenes with May over Grace eg. map scene from previous episode and the afterlife scene in this episode.

I love you guys but I have such a different take. I LOVE Grace. She's the love of Tommy's life despite the history. And the same for Grace. She did her job well but ended up falling in love. He didn't come to New York with her so after time passed she thought it was hopeless and settled for someone else, but she will always love Tommy. Now she's willing to trade a wealthy, respectable, kind banker for seductive gangster Tommy. Do love May, though. I think the love of her life was her husband who died in the war and in Tommy I think she sees an equal on many levels plus he's so damn seductive. I mean, how can she possibly resist him? But he loves Grace.

What you'll notice, without spoiling anything, is that Tommy is very prone to temper tantrums. Specifically when things don't go his way. To my mind, Tommy is extremely intelligent to a degree where there is no one around him who could match him. Using that intellect, he's able to achieve things that no man ever should and navigate the world in an almost god-like, omnipotent fashion to someone looking at him from the outside. However, like at the end of this season, when his plan goes awry and he has to be saved by Winston Churchill's spy. The thought that, throughout all of his planning and despite the fact that he STAYED a step ahead, he still fell short is too much for him to handle and he breaks down. There will be plenty more of that in the future.
