Bluejays habe quickly become my favorite bird. They’re criminally underrated in intelligence. I’ve found them to be smarter than crows, honestly. They almost always understand when you’re trying to feed them, and the second you do, they never forget it. Within the first time of me tossing my bluejay friend a peanut, he became unafraid of me, but not in a stubborn way. He’s still a cautious bird, but he knows I’m tossing the peanuts FOR him, not at him. And he hops right over to me. He’s the first bird to take them directly from me. I also think he’d be the first bird to never trust me again if I ever did try to grab him etc (which is NEVER try to grab a wild bird). My point is, he’s not foolishly trusting. He’s calculated trusting. He observes, and thinks, ans makes his move while taking in my body language the entire time. And he learned quickly… i wasn’t luring him to a trap. Whereas the crows, they sometimes mistake a thrown peanut as an aggressive sign, or get spooked by even the most gentle of arm movements while tossing. I’ve noticed with crows, they do seem to use turning my back as a sign of respect/trust much quicker. If I turn my back to a crow it’s usually gonna take that as a “oh, they trust us, we are good” sign. Whereas a bluejay seems to not take as much weight to back turning.

What is the best way to get birds to use these? I have a black peanut wreath outside and I have only had squirrels use it. I moved it to a place where the squirrels can’t reach it because I don’t want to feed them yard rats. I have blue jays and downy woodpeckers visit other feeders in my yard, but now that the squirrels can’t get to it, it is just existing as a yard ornament. Any tips to gets blue jays and other birds to use it?
@denniswebb74733 жыл бұрын
When I bought one of these about six months ago, I couldn't get any jays to use it. But over time they learned how to land on it (which seemed to be the problem) and now when I fill it up, it is empty within a few hours. Do your jays come to your other feeders? If so, take those down part time for a while to get the jays to explore the wreath feeder.
@nickpaarlberg733 жыл бұрын
@@denniswebb7473 Thank you! Unfortunately I gave up on it after a few weeks. I returned it to Amazon. Now I use a clear suction window feeder. The squirrels and blue jays love the peanuts in it!
