We don't stain the specimens. We directly observe or use polarized light.

@@eLapseTime Oh, I see! Thank you for sharing such valuable information. I just got a SWIFT380 this spring and I'm always curious to know more about the microscopic world and technics. There is way more video on DIY telescope and astronomy compare to DIY microscopy, unfortunately. I'm mainly interested in microscopy related to soil and garden health.
