My grandfather actually turned 18 the day we declared war but had polio as a child so could only be enlisted in the merchant marines. But that was a time the nazis were freely sinking our merchant Marine ships but he, like every other man at the time, didn't care, he was going to do whatever he could to help this country prevail over the enemies

Well, it was decisive in the sense that it ensured Japan's total defeat. And that of Germany as well.

vellisvideos6208. your 100% right if Japan had left the U.S. alone. We wouldn't have bothered them........the U.S. never wanted to be in the War from what I understand.....Isoroku Yamamoto was a classic picture of a idiot in action.

I fail to understand any comfort Great Britain or any other nation had from the attack on Pearl Harbor; and I find that particular sentiment to be insensitive at best.
@stargazer578412 күн бұрын
Your failure to understand is because you stopped listening immediately after the statement was made. The British didn't take comfort in the knowledge that there were people who suffered at Pearl Harbor, they took comfort because they knew that soon there would be more than just material support coming from the United States. Churchill knew that the American people would be triggered beyond belief by such a dastardly attack. It would be more accurate to say that the allies gained comfort in the knowledge of what they knew would ensue after such an attack. It was more like what the script writers said that Yamamoto exclaimed after the attack; 'I fear that all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant, and fill him with a terrible resolve.'
@bigk82102 ай бұрын
Every story has a happy ending or a sad ending. It all depends on where the ending is placed. If time had just ended right then and there after the attack it would have been a happy ending for Japan. They would have scored a decisive victory and that would be that. But, unfortunately for Japan, time didn't end right then and there. Time kept going and the outcome of the attack became clearer and clearer and culminated in two (2) of their cities being vaporized under fireballs hotter and brighter than the Sun. Yikes.

The most perplexing mystery of Pearl Harbor is that Isoroku Yamamoto well knew the vast industrial potential of the United States and was deeply pessimistic about Japan's prospects in a war with the US; yet he insisted upon an attack on Pearl Harbor by threatening to resign as the commander of the Combined Fleet unless his plan was approved. A mystery indeed.
@plmokm332 ай бұрын
He didn't want to attack them, but Japan forced him to do so. He threatened to resign if his exact plans weren't approved and followed to the letter.
@stargazer578412 күн бұрын
@@plmokm33Quite true. He didn't want war with the United States, and enjoyed living here for a time. He was also completely against the pact made with the Germans. However, as he said in a letter to his wife if I remember correctly, 'I am my emporor's servant and will do my duty', or something to that effect. He was actually an honorable man, and was just doing his job to the best of his ability.

That's just a rationale for one of the most dishonorable moves by any nation, at any time, ever. Japan was like a conniving jackal all throughout negotiations, talking peace while moving forward to war. Japan always had a choice - stop brutalizing China. Your insensitive remark demonstrates your unwillingness to face the fact that Japan's behavior was that of a bully and coward simultaneously.
@MrNcgy21 күн бұрын
Why would Yamamoto and plenty of other more enlightened people in Japan be against war, if there was no choice? Japan wanted to rule the world, and was pursuing this goal ruthlessly; as if it had the right. It was sneaky and without ANY honor as it went about this.
