It's about homelessness and mental health so your characterization is spot on. Eddie is an excellent songwriter, there's a lot of meaning and poetry in there when you read the lyrics but his vocal style is complex and it can be hard to decipher sometimes. He's one of those vocalists who pays a lot of attention to sound he's making so his rhythms aren't structured in a traditional way. It's all quite deliberate too, you can hear a recorded track and compare it to the live version and a lot of times even the growls, whoops and yeahs are in the same place. He's really one of the best from the grunge era, possibly **the** best when it comes to all around entertainment, lyricism and vocal ability.

Hey I really enjoy your channel, song selections, reactions and analysis! I'm an old fan of Pearl Jam since the Nirvana/ Seattle Grunge 90's, I always thought this was a really catchy, upbeat song with a really sad undertone to it; I had a similar analysis that this song is about a lost man, homeless and maybe unable to get out of his head to reach the world around him. Someday, yeah, he'll begin his life again. :/ On a side note, Eddie Vedder/ Kurt Cobain shaggy "Grunge" hair was pretty much an icon of that particular period of time and the music scene that came out of Seattle with Nirvana and Pearl Jam, and continued with bands like Blind Melon, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, and a host of others including Alice In Chains and Stone Temple Pilots. I'd love to watch your reaction to Hunger Strike by Temple of the Dog feat. Eddie Vedder if you haven't already. I'm sure it's been mentioned but Nirvana Unplugged from MTV is classic, iconic, powerful stuff. If you've ever lived in Seattle, WA its easy to draw a straight line from the characteristics of the region to this particular expression of rock music at that time.

In an interview Eddie Vedder (the singer) mentioned that this song was inspired by a certain homeless man he had befriended also named Eddie, a Vietnam vet that used to live outside the rehearsal studio they used in Seattle during the recording of their first album (this one). When they returned from their album tour the man was gone and learned he had passed.

Yep, it is about a homeless man, and more broadly about homelessness itself. This came out in the early nineties, the decade after mass homelessness became normal like it still is, the 1980s, and there were a few songs about it that became hits: this one from 1992, Crystal Waters's "Gypsy Woman" from 1991, and Arrested Development's "Mr. Wendal" from 1992. Before the eighties, there was only one other period when there was mass homelessness in the US, the Great Depression of the 1930s, and that one didn't last as long as the one that began in the eighties has; we're still in it after forty years.

Yes, it's about a homeless man that Eddie (the lead singer) befriended. He was most likely schizophrenic. Also, this video was culled from three performances I think which is why it doesn't quite work as one live show. The record company was involved so the band had to fight to get this much rather than an overproduced piece of crap video. They sound as good live if not better still to this day. Thanks for the review. 💕
