The Rythm and soul behind most early PJ is Stone. He would throw off these riffs behind the scene that would get stuck in your head for days. It’s why he’s one of my favorite guitarists ever. Especially live from 94-05. His improvisations were second to none. Especially with headphones.

Dave Abbruzzese was a massive asset to Pearl Jam for the two albums he played on (VS and Vitalogy). His playing is very tight, but carries a lot of energy and helps make this song IMO. Mike McCready's solo in this one was a one take, spur of the moment thing. He's stated that he has trouble recreating the solo in live performances, because he just played what he felt at the time. Probably my favorite solo of his.

Nice review. Thanks for calling out everybody including the engineers. One of these days you're going to remember Stone Gossard's name as the rhythm guitarist and CO-FOUNDER of the band with Jeff Ament. He's an amazing musician who really had the reins in the early days. They're all extremely talented dudes actually which is oddly probably one of keys to their longevity. They go out and do their own thing all the time and are successful individually. Glad you found a second for your play list! 😁

Stone plays lots of single line counter melody parts in tons of songs, especially as Eddie started to play guitar on more songs (Eddie does not play guitar on this song). This and "Why Go" and "Deep" from Ten are probably the most "metal" of their songs. "Rearviewmirror" from this album, especially any live version, can be absolutely bonkers, especially by the end.

This is on the harder side of their stuff yeah, but I think "Habit" goes harder. Still this has a brilliant intro. Reminds me of a couple of tracks off of video games I loved the intros of in a similar way ("Little Piggy" by Jug off of one of the Destruction Derby games does a really interesting beat extension before it kicks in that kinda adds a three-roll to two groups-of-five snare smashing and "Tangerine (instrumental version)" by Feeder off of Gran Turismo 1 begins with some threes-over-fours before it clears it up with some hat hits and they both have the same "whoa what was that I'm pumped now" quality that this Pearl Jam track achieves).

This song is the perfect example of groove, and how important it is to have a drummer that understands playing in the pocket. Dave Abbruzzese is the essence of groove, and is by far the best drummer for PJ. When he was in the band, they had a very distinct groove that none of the other bands from that scene had. It was what made PJ worthy of being included in the Seattle big 4 along with Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Nirvana. Without Dave in the band, to me, they’re just average.
