Pearl Jam is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990. Since its inception, the band's line-up has consisted of Eddie Vedder (lead vocals), Mike McCready (lead guitar), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar) and Jeff Ament (bass). The band's fifth member is drummer Matt Cameron (also of Soundgarden), who has been with the band since 1998. Boom Gaspar (piano) has also been a session/touring member with the band since 2002. Drummers Dave Krusen, Matt Chamberlain, Dave Abbruzzese and Jack Irons are former members of the band.

My generations sound track. Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden and The Tea Party led the way for me. Plenty of others as well, but these 4 put out the most iconic and easily recognizable 90's sounds imo. Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, Faith no More.... Nothing fake or filler, just real music that shits on what qualities for music now.

I could name another 15+ bands from this decade easily. Ahh I'm off to hit play on my Spotify Playlist with all of these bands :)

I appreciate your opinion, but hell no. Ten is one of the greatest albums by any band. Vs is awesome, but watered down.... Vitalogy the same diminish. Vs still rocks but it's not Ten IMO.
@nicolasriveros943
@nicolasriveros943 6 жыл бұрын
I disagree. In my opinion Vs. is the full opposite of a "Watered down" Ten. I think is bigger and better in any ways, the production is still fresh, the whole band is tightly jointed and is the only one record that was written by all of the band members, and you can really tell. I get that Ten is the "classic" pic, that maybe has the major number of radiofriendly singles, at least from the Grunge era, but the production is kinda dated, even the band has said that they weren't happy with the mixing, (hence the Remaster version, which i think it sound better) and maybe on a more personall level, i get "used" to the songs. Ten is still an excellent album and i agree with you on Vitalogy being wattered down (is still good, but my least favorite from their Holy Trinity) but i think Vs is a perfect follow up to an album like Ten, and in alot of ways, even better.
@ianmason2003
@ianmason2003 6 жыл бұрын
See now I have always thought Vs's sound quality is bad. It's very soft. I think what they meant when they said they don't like the production of Ten, it could possibly have been some glammy production things happening.
@jasonallen5318
@jasonallen5318 6 жыл бұрын
How is the production dated? Vs has much worse production quality than Ten, but sound quality aside, Ten is one of the best albums ever made and is very memorable...Vs is not really close to that level of epic proportion. It's fine that you prefer Vs over Ten (I guess we all have different opinions) but 99.99% of people will agree that Ten is hands down their best work.

My favorite band, and one of my favorite albums. Thanks for doing this one! Ten, Versus, and Vitalogy is easily one of the greatest trios of albums ever released. And a lot of the more recent stuff is pretty damn good too. And of course the official live bootlegs. PJ is a fantastic live band. It's hard to find fault with much of anything on this album. I admit there's some songs I listen to a hell of a lot more than others, but none of them are really bad, and the performances...man, PJ is a great band. Stone Gossard writes some killer riffs. Sludgy and dirty as hell, but with a lot of melody that makes them easy to hum along with, and able to switch from more tender stuff to almost raging punk fury at any point he wants. Jeff Ament is just one of the best bass players ever. Mike McCready was doing something no one else was doing in Grunge, openly throwing in just pure Stevie Ray Vaughan style blues guitar heroism in at a time when everyone was saying guitar heroics were dead (to be fair...that was kind of a lie. Yes, Grunge as a style never RELIED on solos, nor was it big on the type of insane technicality the Shrapnel guys were doing in the mid-80's, but a lot of those bands still played solos aplenty. It's just the mindset changed from, "You know you can play, so why not show it off?" to, "Not every song NEEDS a solo. If it doesn't work for the song, don't do it. It'll make the ones where a solo works stand out more anyways."), and Eddie Vedder's voice, man....that smooth, rich baritone combined with those occasional piercing screams just does something to you. And people are STILL trying to rip it off today! Personally, my favorite songs on this one are Garden and Black. Both of those are big, dramatic power ballads in the best way, and Black can still make me cry if I haven't listened to it in awhile.

For the longest time, I couldn't get into Pearl Jam. I'd hear songs like Animal, Jeremy, Alive, Better Man, and others on rock stations, and always feel really conflicted. The instrumentation would usually be great, but I couldn't stand Eddie Vedder's voice for the longest time. It always sounded too shaky and off kilter. After watching this video, I decided to give Pearl Jam a full chance and listen to Ten all the way through. The first four songs cemented my opinion (great instrumentation, ehhhh vocals), but once I got to Black, Eddie's voice suddenly clicked with me. At first I wondered if he just sounded good on that song, but I enjoyed his performances for the rest of the album. I gave it another listen, and he sounded good on the first four songs as well. Thanks for convincing me to give them a full chance.

Remember hearing Even Flow or Jeremy on MTV then realizing they were on the same album, I was blown away. It's perfect from beginning to end, and Release ends with that Once's starting chords so I HAD TO LISTEN TO IT AGAIN! Not that much albums have that flow where the track listing is as important as the quality of the songs overall, each one seems to be placed where It should be so you can have a full album listening experience instead of a shuffle and mixed song listening. This is one of the best debut albums (and best albums) of all time. By far!

Classic album. I like Vs. and Vitalogy a little bit more, but Ten is still killer too.

I'm not even a big Pearl Jam fan but this album... and it was their debut! I'm going to have to give this another spin soon then try to get more into the rest of their catalog.

There seems to be a big disparity between how rap-fans rate their albums and how rock-fans rate their albums, as ive noticed that on the 'rate your music' website, classic albums like TEN, score the equivalent of a 72 out of 100, which to me is a 'slightly better than average score'.....or 'grade'....while kendrick lamar's best album scored , basically, a 90 out of 100, and no Beatles album scored higher than a 82 out of a 100. I bought the best-rated kendrick album becuz of a great song called 'king kunta' and i listened to the album maybe 3 times, and im sceptical that it is a drastically better album than anything the beatles or pearl jam ever did, so maybe us rock fans need to be a little more generous with our ratings????

Ten is great. Pearl Jam were kickass until Binaural. Then, not so much. Eddie Vedder got a little, um, repetitive and boring after that. Sorrynotsorry.

This album changed my musical life. I remember seeing those waves at the start of the video for 'Alive' on MTV's Headbanger's Ball. Five minutes later I was hooked. And yeah, MTV did used to play music!

I'm from Utah. I'm sorry you had to go to school in Provo. That area strangely has a strong music scene, you just have to know where to go. But I live in Salt Lake. I loved this album growing up as well. Love your insight on it. Cheers

Pearl jam is fantastic live and their 90’s album are awesome. Yield does not get enough attention. However... Pearl Jams most recent release was unlistenable. Dance of the Clairvoyants was the first single I couldn’t even get through.

The solo for Alive sounds like it's played by Jimi Hendrix on steroids, it's unreal. Then there's Black, possibly the greatest song ever.

9:50 I completely agree with this statement, as many past albums of the '90s and even early 2000s felt complete because many bands didn't want to half-ass a project they were working on; they just wanted to make amazing music all around. Nowadays, you almost never see this since acts of the modern rock/metal days want to release a few good songs, maybe 1 great and call it quits for the album. There have been a few gems over the years that I've spotted, including an album titled The Light Years by Aviations (which you can unfortunately only listen to on KZbin and Bandcamp) which I have as my favorite album of 2018 so far which I think would be an interesting album for your "How Did I Miss This?" series (even though this isn't Patreon requested XD). Main point, bands need to try to make full albums where all the tracks feel like they belong.
