If I was going to try that with any of the bands Crash has done one of these one, I'd pick Rush. If that episode of 'Trailer Park Boys' taught me anything, they won't even call the cops if I'm persuasive enough.

Jason Stallings No Code was their first album that I ever owned. Their opening trilogy of albums are, no doubt, amazing; but, No Code was really when they braved out beyond their trademark sound. Sure, it was there in a smattering of songs, from Hail, Hail to Red Mosquito; but, the other songs are undoubtedly good. The album “hangs together” really well. For me, while I love many of the songs, Yield and Bianural are their worst; Riot Act is also super underrated, as it finds them dabbling with other forms of 90s and early 00s rock that had previously been outside of their purview. It wasn’t until their self-titled/avocado album that they “returned to form” from their No Code album.
@jstall20
@jstall20 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree though I think Binaural is a pretty solid album. It's what got me into the band. and generally the song writing is pretty high quality while I do get some people's mixed feelings on the mix of the album. It works for me but not for some people. Avocado only kinda works for me in the first half. the second half is kinda not that great.

I saw the video for "Jeremy" when I was 8 or 9 years old in a "25 Greatest Videos of All Time" countdown. I've listened to Ten, backspacer, Avocado and the rearviewmirror compilation. And I heard No Code was pretty scattershot, but i have to say there is one undeniably masterful moment: "Off he goes". A song about trying to be a better friend, i think from Eddie's point of review. To me it's a song about life reflection, i like playing it on the road on long drives trying to think about my life and how I could live it better, only to find the answers aren't always easy. One of the band's best introspective moments, and very relatable.

I’d say that they’re better than Yield, but definitely not No Code. For me, Yield certainly has a slew of great songs, but the album itself doesn’t hang together very well, imo. No Code, though, is the closest they’ll get to, say, a Sgt Pepper’s or Achtung Baby, I’m being a successful stylistic shift.

A lot of guys my age might look back on this time as MTV's golden age when they played some of these best rock music. While I wouldn't completely disagree, I remember all too well how one can get sick of anything if it's shoved down your earhole 24/7. It wasn't until I got into my teens when I really began to appreciate the music I grew up with. It's so wild thinking back to when rock music was what everyone listened to and easily the most popular genre!

...I like "Bugs". I also like the sound collages on Vitalogy. Sure, it's all very uncharacteristic on the surface, but the anger and unease translates excellently all over that record both in the more conventional songs and the unnerving experiments, and I think skipping them loses some of that necessary bitterness even if they do make the album flow a bit strangely.

hot take: if you can listen to the brendan o'brien mix of ten I recommend that over the original. the original mix is good, it just has way too much of an echo throughout it. the brendan o'brien mix is way tighter, and much more raw. even flow sounds so much better and the solo on alive is just incredible. the drums in why go sound dirtier, and those are just a few examples. it gives it an even edgier presentation and it sounds way less produced and way more real. I recommend it over the original, plus it has some bonus tracks on it as well I believe.

Wish this video was around 6 or 7 years ago when I first dove into Pearl Jam, definitely would've helped. I started going in chronological order and was diggin' each album wanting more and then I got to No Code (and I believe also Yield at the same time) and was turned off from going any further. Like, No Code was so bad that I didn't really give Yield much of a chance and conceded that Pearl Jam's best work was in their beginning and that's all I needed to know. Now I feel like I should try to go back and give their other stuff a listen. Thanks for the great insight (as always).

No Code was really experimental, and Eddie was going through really bad writer's block at the time. Yield was the first album where Eddie let go of the creative reins, and the other members of the band took a greater role in the songwriting process (including writing lyrics, which Eddie had done 100% of up to this point.) The Jack Irons years were... we'll go with "transitional". No fault of Jack's; that's just where the band was at that point. But I do think some strong songs came out of it regardless... "Hail, Hail" off of No Code is a personal favorite, as is "Brain of J" from Yield. In listening to the entire discography back to front, I've learned two things: 1) Ten was a lightning bolt, and cannot -- and SHOULD not -- be recreated, and 2) none of their albums should be compared with any other album they did. They do weird stuff and experiment all the time, moreso as they got older and more confident (and ESPECIALLY after No Code.) So if you go into this looking for the first three albums, or ANY of their albums, you'll be disappointed. Just be open minded. :)

While I do think that Yield is an overall weak album, with a few decent songs on it (e.g., Given To Fly), I love love LOVE No Code, and have always thought that it was horribly underrated. I’ve generally thought that their Bianural album was also fairly weak (again, with a smattering of great songs), but that Riot Act was where they really hit gold again. In it, they dabble in other styles of 90s rock that hadn’t previously been in their purview. Their self-titled/avocado album was where they really played “their sound” again, imo. Their last three, Gigaton included, have all been overall great albums, especially being later in their long career.

It's really funny looking back at your old video ''10 Ten Nu Metal Band'' where young Crash mocks who was once present Crash for his hat, and now even older Crash is doing it.

Hey Crash! This video hit close to home. This was one of the first bands I ever got into! My early childhood was filled with Ten, Backspacer, self titled, and the rest of their early stuff!Question , would you consider doing an episode on Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, or any other punk band from that late 70s early 80s scene?

I remember when Luke made a video about Ten and I said I'd have to do a deeper dive into their discography... still only listened to Ten and Vitalogy at this point, lol. I agree, Vitalogy is really good and worth listening to.

Good stuff as always man! :D Also, since the first part has Soundgarden references in it, HTGI Soundgarden in the future perhaps? (I already know where Superunknown would be, that album's a gad damn classic in my opinion).

Here’s the thing about you dude, and don’t take this the wrong way, you’re obviously nerdy with your style of humor, but your articulation is what gives you the fanbase that you have. And that’s a good thing, it means your audience likes you because you do a good job articulating how you feel without dumb blank statements. Most KZbinrs who are ultra-famous don’t really get by on their actual skills as reviewers as much as comedians who just look good doing it. So props to you for doing well at the most important part of making videos and earning your fanbase the right way!

A little correction. You seem to imply that Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament originally played together in Mother Love Bone when in fact they already played together in Green River with Mark Arm and Steve Turner (later replaced by Bruce Fairweather). Mark Arm and Steve Turner later created Mudhoney while Stone, Jeff and Bruce created Mother Love Bone.

This type of album is what I like to call "The Pinkerton Effect" because it's an album that drastically changed careers for how negatively it was received initially, but in hindsight it's usually not a bad record at all. Other examples of this phenomenon are: One hot minute, pretty odd, warning, adore or machina I depending on who you ask and imho first impressions on earth

To be fair to Riot Act, considering it came out after 9/11 & a majority of people were afraid to be caustic to the government. And I can only imagine what the record company was saying.
