It's a beautiful kit and your breakdown to the actual use-case and study of your sound is spot on. People need to consider their own use-case as to why they pick the set(s) that they pick. Well done.

Its totally make sense after hearing why you choose Pearl for your use. For me, Pearl drum set produce nice high tone for attack and cutting through middle range that other drum set companies are lesser focused on. In the band or studio or SNS situation, low frequency from drum sets are either covered by other instruments such as bass guitar or as you said, can not be heard from phone speaker. So rich middle tones are key to make drum sounds cut through and be heard. I can not wait to hear more of you playing your beautiful kit.

Hey Adam I just wanted to thank you for making these podcasts. You addressed a lot of points here that I think as drummers, we either forget or don't pay attention to at first, only to come back months, even years later with that "Oh yeah why... moment" Really liked when you touched on your content being played on phones rather than huge monitors and how that influenced your choice of drums/mixing. Long story short, great work brother 👌🏾

Good for you man, I like the transparency. I had an experience where I had send a kick back to pearl twice BUT, my experience was so POSITIVE, because they not only worked with me but prioritized me just a lay person by getting me a rep and made it right. Now this is interesting... I thought I'm crazy thinking that something is wrong with my pearl kit. Did you send it back right after delivery or later? I've had my masterworks kit for almost two years now, and I've realised that there is something wrong with my 12" tom. Do you think I can still send it back or is that too late?
@Zachadiddle
@Zachadiddle 2 жыл бұрын
@@bremssdrummer2845 I sent it back right after it was ordered, I noticed some shell separation and really bad damage to the bearing edges. I'm fairly positive that UPS was the cause of my headaches though. I eventually got Sweetwater to send my kick through FedEx with no problem. That said, Pearls warranty should cover shells, finishes, and bearing edges so long as any damage was acquired from normal use or shipping, it might be worth a phone call though if its been a while since you purchased it.

Wow, so many decision! About the company first, and then so many options for each drum! I would probably go for a 22 inch kick drum myself. They sound big, good low end and good punch. I’ve never really tried 20 inch ones though. And I do know I struggle to get a 22 kick through certain door frames. For floor toms, 14 and 16. And probably mahogany on the floor toms too. I have only good things to say about Pearl drums. I own an Export kit, and it sounds absolutely fine for not much money. I really appreciate you talking about the Session Studio Select, that’s a kit i’ve been interested in and you gave it a clear thumbs up!

Maple mahogany blends, thick 6-8 ply shells 8" through to 16" with 20" gong, 22" bass and 14" snare. Your approach to concept, conception and aesthetic choices mirror my thoughts and my order process too. Thanks for sharing the video, I absolutely look forward to watching more going forward.

Hey Adam, I went thru the fun Masterworks ordering process in 2014 and still absolutely love my kit. I wanted to make it 100% unique and take advantage of the options like you did. Pearl even used my kit in the 2015 catalog (red bubinga/gold hardware 2 page spread) which is why I started doing videos back then. And the guys at Pearl are top notch - John, Tom, Derek, Kevin, Al… I also went with the STL lugs like you, and I mixed the mahogany and maple in everything except the snare which is mainly birch. The toms/floors totally growl, love it! and like you, I'm all about the aesthetics and back in 2014 they would still do sizes down to 1/4” depths, so I did across the front - 6x7, 8x7.25, 10x7.75 and 12x8.5 - 1/4", 1/2” and 3/4” apart - and Derek Wolfford told me that I was the last Masterworks kit to have the inside stained the same as the outside finish - very nice visual. Check it out sometime in my vids, I think you’ll dig it. Keep up the great work on here!

@ Adam Tuminaro What a gorgeous and magnificent drum set! Truly, when talking drums, a man after mine own heart! At the risk of sounding critical, and certainly not my intention, (and I really love the breakdown you gave as to why you made your choices) but what I have understood in the past conflicts with your description of the thickness of the shell. I am of the understanding that thicker shells of course having more mass, confines the vibration, giving it more of a high pitch and quicker decay, whereas the thinner shells, having much less mass, allow the vibration to resonate longer in the shell, giving a fundamentally lower pitch and longer resonation resulting in more warmth. Which, birch, being a bright attack wood, thinner shells allow for more warmth than would otherwise. Anyway, no disrespect intended, I love the way your drums sound, and, yes, I am listening to them through my AirPods and they sound fantastic!!! Extra plies of mahogany in the bass and snare drums also was a great choice! All of the aesthetic choices you made, the matte finished natural limba with the black nickel lugs, are top notch in my insignificant opinion. Huge fan! Big fan of your playing as well!

Hey Adam, so I believe you made a brilliant choice on your kit. A great man once said "There's nothing to fear but fear itself" in regards to your choice of sizes. As far as how they sound, in short they sound incredibly organic. If that makes sense. I liken them to being in a forest and there they were, growing outa the ground. Beautiful wood tone my friend. It's as far away from an electronic drum set sound as you can get in my humble opinion. I'm not against electronic kits, it's never gonna be the same. As it shouldn't. I have a first Gen Masterworks Carbon fiber kit and I love them. Congrats on our new kit my friend. Well played!!🙏

I would like to get a Masterworks kit myself, for my church... as far as the concept, I want mahogany on the interior of all my drums, with the maple reinforcement rings, making the toms thin-shelled, except for the bass drum. For that I'd like an 8-ply for the low-end boom. I like shallow rack toms, 8, 10 and 12, in front of me... on my left side I'd like a 14X12 tom... in honor of my daughter's birthday (12/14), and on my right side I'd like a 12X15 tom, in memory of my father... when he passed away, the official time of his passing was at 12:15PM. I wouldn't do a matching snare drum though... I don't particularly like matching snare drums. I have 8 snare drums, all of them Pearl, and 6 of them are 13" snare drums, plus a 12" and a 10" snare drum. I've always preferred snare drums size 13" and smaller. So depending on the church service, I'll use one of those snare drums. The color I'm interested in is a red color, chrome hardware or perhaps black nickel, small lugs for the resonance, and die-cast hoops. If you like, I can definitely tell you about my 8 Pearl snare drums! I'm a huge fan of Pearl Drums... being that I'm a church drummer, to me Pearl is the ultimate "church kit!"

I deleted my original comment because I have found this podcast to be one of your most interesting. I knew Pearl had a stellar reputation among amateurs and professionals alike and people are always loyal to the way they are treated. Gear specifics, tonewoods, and the manufacturers themselves have always interested me. I have always found Pearl to sound almost as clinical and clean as Yamaha whereas TAMA is an earthier version of both. All three have incredibly sturdy hardware and their QC is borderline OCD. My Starclassic was packaged with a rubber seal around the bearing edges of the drums. That is a touch of class and attention to detail that keeps one coming back. I’m sure the others do it as well. Bearing in mind what you discussed about endorsements and how they work, it seems to me one is imprinted with a brand at an early age or one is chasing a sound regardless of the badge on the shells. One stays within that brand for that sound or one is looking for the best available treatment in their quest. But I do agree, reputation matters. And so does image. With TAMA, you go from Erskine to Lombardo to Copeland to Cobham. With Pearl, Luzier to Chambers to the late Porcaro and Jordison. All of the cool kids seem to have joined the DW club and some stayed behind in the ones they originally joined. We are judged by the company we keep and we should not pretend that it doesn’t matter. Sonor is like MIT: small and brilliant, but not the one the girl is impressed with… Pearl has that quality of cool and style. It’s always well-dressed and well-received no matter how ubiquitous, and it knows how to throw a party’. TAMA? You’re a little more intense, the preppy girl may not like you at first, but you’re never boring, know how to fix things, you’re terribly OCD, and loyal in all things. You’ll also use profanity when it simply isn’t necessary. Pearl won’t do that unless it’s partying or getting another tatt.

Casey is a not a multimillionaire. I think you’ve got the wrong idea about how KZbin pays revenue to creators. He is an incredibly hard worker, and has done well for himself. But the “multimillionaire drummers” are limited to those in extremely famous bands, and commercial drummers like Questlove, Barker, or others who have reached celebrity status. I’ve known Casey for nearly a decade. My wife and I stayed with his family 2 weeks ago, and their kids come visit our farm several times per year. While he’s been tremendously helpful in helping me learn about Pearl, and we’ve done tons of projects together over the years, it was actually Chris Brewer, my meinl rep, who made the connection to Pearl.

Mostly just speaking with knowledgeable friends. The rounded 45 provides the “truest” tone. There are advantages to other degree cuts, but round 45 allows for optimal contact, which translates to organic tones from the shell. If you *really* want to hear the shell, go with rounded 45.
