Pearl Midtown Review : Bearded Drums (Season 3, episode 4)

In this week's episode we take a look at Pearl's Midtown compact drum set. This small kit features a "16 kick, "10 rack tom" "13 floor tom, and "13 snare drum. The kit comes with all mounting hardware as well as the kick riser. There are optional bags that can be purchased separately and the kit does not come with stands. This kit runs $479.00 and the optional bags are $113.00. This is a continuation of our series on the ultimate travel rig that can be loaded in one trip.

Welcome back, I’ve had one of these kids now for almost 3 years, it is excellent great for a Covid practice at home with the right type of drum pads and LV A.D. sandals this is a great practice kit and can be used for life performances I have done both again an excellent product and you can’t beat the price, oh yeah you really don’t need those bags

Main kit is a 69' set of Slingerlands that are super versatile! 22" ,16 and 13" toms! Great for anything but bop! I m looking at a Yamaha bop kit that better than the modern compact drums. 14"/18" 12" and 14"/14" toms! Perfect!

Hey Bro! Good to see you back posting videos again! In regards to small kits...I have no problem with the sound of any of the modern "Hip Gig" type kits. With the right heads and tuning you can get great sound out of most of them. I agree the snares are the most suspect with any of them. My problem is merely aesthetic. Being a big guy 6' 3" I always feel like Godzilla behind those little kits! Thus why I'm currently playing a 26" kick! Have you ever done any videos on kit repairs? I think a great series for gigging drummers would be how to care for, repair and give new life into older kits! I'm currently doing my 3rd complete restoration of a kit to gig with. An 80's Pearl Export kit. Getting a new custom wrap that my company is printing for me. Thanks again for posting! Looking forward to seeing the next one! Good to be talking with you again buddy, I haven’t really had to repair anything as of late so that’s why I have not posted that type of content but I’m sure something will come along that was spur that topic. What type of mounting system on yours? I’ve seen ones w a iso mount. And others w L arm straight into shell.

Remo emperor coated on the Tom and pinstripe coated on the floor tom.

You know, I’m not really sure. I’ve always tuned these little drums by ear. I do keep them on the mid to mid low tensions. I do keep the resonant heads a little tighter and just try to space each drum out from the others so they are defined pitch wise. I know that’s not very specific, hope it helps.

What cymbals are you using in this demo? I have this kit in the same finish with LV cymbals. I'm no pro but I think it sounds really good.

Those are Istanbul dry dark “13 hi hats, 18” Sabian artisan crash, and “20 Sabian legacy ride.

I have always used either evans ec2 or evens uv1. I’ve also had good luck with remo pinstripes and emperors.
