Building our new listening room

This video follows the steps in the design and build of our new listening room, in Tienen Belgium. With ever increasing demand from customers to hear our Sibelius loudspeakers, we have built a dedicated listening room that reflects the typical room size of many of our clients. On demo, we have a range of amplifiers that our customers can listen to, to help determine their pairing decisions.

Here's a suggestion for a follow up video - do an interview with the folks at GIK on their process for designing the room treatment layout for your listening room using the REW files you sent them. I'm sure a lot of your viewers would find this very interesting.

A little tip - treat the front wall with diffusion and pull the speakers out from the wall and you'll get better depth and more ambience without sacrificing clarity.

This is the best ad for GIK I've ever seen and I mean that without the slightest irony. Its so clearly demonstrates how big a role the room plays in your system's performance. And most of all - its an attractive room! I could have one at home and everyone would be happy. If I had to build something like a mixing booth or recording studio at home - well forget anyone else, I'd hate it myself!

Very nice room! If I'm ever on my way through Belgium I'll stop by for a listen, or when I start shopping for speakers in that class. Not all the way there yet, but that's what's so nice about this hobby. Things grow along the way. Btw I'm very happy with my own panels from GIK, it has been a great joy tuning my room and finding the sweetspot between liveliness and clarity.

I say Harley, Splendid! Reminds me of my room project 5 years ago. I have a couple of Vicoustic"London" kits scattered around the walls, including the front wall. There are a couple of GIK curved abfusors across the front corners with bass traps behind them. Since I use magnepan LRS, this breaks up the rear reflection nicely. No ceiling damping required with Maggies. They radiate almost entirely horizontally. Good for lower ceilings. Good to hear how your voice became pleasant again with the treatment. Always a good sign! Hi thank you for your comment. Usually, it is considered best not to have anything between the loudspeakers, and in HiFi, there often has to be some kind of compromise, especially in a listening / demo room. Unfortunately, the room is not ‘perfect’ but it’s way better than it was 😉.

Because they often block it. b. because People only hear the sound through their own systems and c. Because KZbin heavily compress the sound quality. But I’ll see what I can do. Thank you. In fact we were surprised too at how close they can go to the rear wall without any apparent loss of image or quality. For decades, our customers have been placing them right up against rear walls and loving them. But also moving them forward is just an option because they do not need boundary walls for bass enhancement

Congratulation on your new room! I noticed in the design some ceiling absorbers, but did not see them in the video. I also notice you have a bare wood floor between speakers and couch, where most people, including myself, would put some sort of carpet/rug down. I certainly noticed the rug (and even a coffee table now moved to the side) when I set up my room. Any comment? In the next 2 years, I have to go to Leiden and Brussels for sure, so pretty close to you. I may try to make an appointment to listen to some different amps. That would be a great opportunity, indeed! Very happy with my PLEvo300-XA25-SG combo, but curious about different amp sounds. I'll bring Swiss chocolates🙂

As for the rug, we decided against a rug because we did not want to over damp the room and to avoid the soundstage coming too far forward. How it is, sounds perfect to us now. Tienen is famous in Belgium for its sugar refinery. Because of its sugar cubes everyone in Belgium has heard of Tienen.

The great story is that while fighting the French, the British cut off the sugar supply to Europe (they had a monopoly on sugar) but a clever Belgian invented a way of refining sugar from beet, and the problem of supply was solved! And all this happened in Tienen, so they say!

Thanks for your comment. They should only put a rug in front if it is needed. In our case, the rooms’ Acoustics are very well balanced so we do not want absorption from the floor in front of us. In real life, there’s no rug between you and the musicians. 😉

hi Harley, I had one question : I don't understand why you put Q7D diffusors behind de listening position.. on the side walls.. To me it seems to make more sense to put the Q7D diffusors front wall behind the speakers and put some diffusion between the speakers (front wall)...for example some panels of the Gotham quadratic diffusor? Hi Nick, thanks for your question. I think you’re going to be disappointed with my answer. When I believe in the Competance and professionalism of a group of people, that work together in a well established company, I tend to give them my challenge and then let them come up with the solution. If the solution does not work, then we discuss. At the time we were building the listening room, I was very busy with recording projects and other stuff, so I let them get on with it. As it happens, it worked out fine. We made a few Tweaks but for the rest, nothing. So all I can suggest is that you reach out to GIK, i am sure they’ll be very happy to give you a scientific explanation. Tell them I suggested this. Hoping that helps? And sorry not to have answered your question directly

Thank you Aman. The shelves were ordered and made in a local timber merchant, while the metal feet came from a DIY store. We placed little screws in the shelves that the feet of the pillars sit over, so that it is very sturdy, especially if we accidentally knock one while loading up a big, heavy amplifier.

Very good question! It’s a very sensitive topic, as you know. The short answer is ‘no’. We have a pretty good power supply from the provider and the sockets are fed directly from the main board. We are not against power conditioners but decided that in our listening room the equipment must run on its own merit. Unless a manufacturer stipulates it is required but then they need to provide one. Until now that stipulation has never arisen. My rule of thumb is to reach out to the equipment manufacturers and to ask them specifically: do you recommend the use of a power conditioner with your equipment?

Hi we built this room specifically to demonstrate our Sibelius loudspeakers. However, a well balanced room will bring out the best of all loudspeakers. Some adaptation might be needed for some kinds, like electrostatics or omni-directional. I hope that helps?

The biggest difference is the length of the reverb, more or less cutting back from 450ms to under 150. We had a little drop at around 32Hz but nothing that causes any real concern.

Thank you Andy! Good question about running Room Perfect, and yes we did. Because the room is so good. The difference was minimal and, in fact we prefer it without. But it’s always nice to have. Abd the mono / stereo option is great 😉

@@PearlAcoustics I looked up the Axial modes for your room dimensions and those corner bass traps aren't really going to absorb that much. Do some research on Axial room modes, they are typically along the entire wall surface and they are the most audible. What GIK and other companies do is sell products to treat more oblique modes, which aren't as audible. I have only found one company that sells products to really go after Axial room modes and really go after the lower end frequency problems that plague small room acoustics. Also, I'm surprised you pushed the speakers closer to the front wall and don't have some quadratic defuses against the front wall and rear wall. The rear panels you have don't have as wide of a frequency range as Quadratics. Oh well. Maybe next time you'll try another brand of treatment that's going to elevate the room acoustics further than what GIK did.

Hi @@Oneness100 Thanks for your informative reply. Axial room modes are indeed the most important and, of course GIK is very aware of them and took them into account. They even have a white paper on the topic, they will supply it to you, if you ask, or simply visit their website. Here is a short extract: Calculating Room Modes Since it is exact, we need to know how to calculate room modes. Use the formula below as a room mode calculator for all modes, not just the axial room modes. Room Mode Formula: F = c/2 * sqrt(p^2/L^2 + q^2/W^2 + r^2/H^2) F= Frequency c = speed of sound (1130 feet per second or 344 meters per second) sqrt = Square Root ^2 = squared L = Length of Room W = Width of Room H = Height of Room p, q and r represent the mode we’re solving for in the room mode equation. If you want to know the axial mode for the room length, p=1, q=0, r=0. If you want to know the 2nd axial mode, p=2, q=0, r=0. To find a tangential mode, use 1 in 2 of the variables from the room mode calculator. So, if you want the first tangential of the length and width, p=1, q=1, r=0. Generally, as you go higher into the multiples (harmonics) of the modes, they become slightly less intense, but also occur at more places in the room.

I have a Decware Zen Amp and my listening room is roughly the same size. Being that I’m in the States, I can’t swing by. I’m curious as to what DB levels the Sibelius speakers will comfortably play with the Zen Amp?

Dear Spencer, the Zen amp (as you know) is fantastic, extremely holographic. However, unless your room is very small and not too damped, it runs out of steam if you want to play at reasonably loud levels. I have ordered a Tori 5 from Decware, and hope it will deliver the same magic but with a bit more power.

My normal listening levels are 70-80db and your video on, how loud does 1 Watt play, was a huge help in understanding what the Sibelius can do with just 1 watt. I also love your approach with the listening room with many respectable products and not just showing what may work best for the room. I hope to own a pair someday. What’s the best way to enquirer and understand lead times?

I was disappointed at the slight-of-hand with the microphones. It really wasn't necessary to not use a lapel mic for the "noisy" introduction to the room and then follow up with a lapel mic in the treated room. I can't unsee it and can't unhear it. I wish you would have been honest. Really, of all customers for any product in the world, how would an audiophile not notice?

Hi Dan, I am not sure what you mean? I used a lapel microphone throughout. No tricky dealings at all. That’s not my style, philosophy or approach at all.

In this video at the 2:31 mark, I can see something that I might assume to be a wireless mic unit in your back pocket, but I don't see a microphone on your shirt or lapel, or anywhere else, and it sounds like a camera microphone might have been used for your dialogue. No doubt the room echo is present, and any microphone would demonstrate the noise problem. Also, there is no doubt the echo is gone after such a superb room treatment. Continuing, at 4:24, the mic is visible and the tone of your voice is certainly different. Perhaps it's a different mic. If I'm wrong, I offer my apology. Frankly, I'm touched that you responded to my comment. Thank you for that. I sincerely enjoy your videos and have watched many of them several times. As a side note, you might link to this video from your VMV A1 review video where, at around the 7 minutes 30 seconds mark, you suggest room treatment for budding audiophiles. That advice connects these two videos nicely, for what it's worth. Thanks again for your reply.

@@danbuffington75 Dear Dan, thank you for your response. I used exactly the same Sennheiser lapel microphone throughout. The reason why you sometimes cannot see it is because I tuck it just behind the flap of my shirt button holes. Depending on the angle it becomes visible or invisible. If you take a group of 10 experts, om any subject and ask them a specific question, likely you’ll get 10 differing opinions. This is never more true when applied to audio. So you took an empty, shell of a room, which is bound to echo/co/co. Paid GIK an undisclosed figure to ‘acoustically correct it and yes, there was a notable reduction in the reverb time. However, back in the real world, many audiophiles, including me, have to make do with their family lounge to accommodate their hifi. In many instances, the carpet, rugs, curtains, sofas, cushions and other soft furnishings are more than sufficient to ensure an acceptable RT level. I wonder, if you had not gone the route of GIK and simply carpeted and furnished that room, how close would the finished product reflect the results achieved by GIK and how much money would you have potentially saved I note you positioned your hifi rack between your speakers. This practice would be frowned by numerous, so say, experts who would proclaim that it would kill the soundstage, and destroy good imaging. I’m not denying that room treatment does change audio performance. Whether that change constitutes an improvement? Must surely be down to personal taste as illustrated when you had to make changes to GIKs work to get the room to sound more to your preference.

Hi, thanks for your comment and contribution to the topic. I have made a video on how to make your own room treatments which maybe you have already seen? As you stated, there is always a compromise. The room is our Belgian listening room, people travel from all over the world (we have even had visitors from the US), so we wanted to make it absolutely as good as possible. Interestingly, the cost was not as big as i thought it would be and certainly less than many people spend on an amplifier. (It cost about the same amount as a PassLabs Int 25. and the result was (with my sincerest respects) way, way more than could be done with some carpets and a few rugs. @@PearlAcoustics thank you for your response. It’s appreciated and respected. I will relate to you a recent experience that guided me to my current opinion. I recently visited multiple ‘bricks and mortar’ hifi retailers with the aim of upgrading my trusty British integrated amplifier. For every audition I took with ne, that trusty amp. I requested that all auditions were performed blind. Easy to do, because I am! Without exception, regardless of electronics further down the chain, the speakers being employed or the acoustical listening environment, literally within 15 seconds of any track commencing, I could unquestionably identify my amp. This must surely indicate that room acoustics aren’t the dominant influencing factor that manufacturers of room treatment claim it to be.
