Pearl is proud to welcome Jim Kilpatrick, the first class leading drummer of the The House of Edgar Shotts & Dykehead, to the strongest team of Pipe drummers and bands in the world. Pearls roster also includes such talents as Eric Ward (Strathclyde Police), Barry Wilson (Scottish Power), Reid Maxwell (Simon Fraser University) and Drew Duthart (Scottish Lion -78th Fraser Highlanders).
Jim Kilpatrick is a true legend who started his pipe band career at the age of 15 by winning the World Drum Corps and World Pipe Band Championships (the first of his 18 World Drum Corps Championships) with the House of Edgar Shotts & Dykehead. In the Pipe and Marching scene his role is enormous, not only as a player, but also as a Worldwide Educator and as a Clinician. Her Majesty The Queen has recognized this and has rewarded Jim for his services to Music by giving him the title "MBE" (Member of the British Empire).

This is how all pipe drummers play.... It's the right way. If this guy was in Phantom Regiment it would be the wrong way, but he's not.

"The thing" with jim's right hand technique is that its heavily based on very small muscle groups within his wrist. Add to that the natural rebound of the sticks when they touch the drum skin and you got it down (the very first moment you do a movement towards the drum, theres a tactile sensation which controls the rebound). Hold the sticks very lightly and you're set to go.

@pr192001 Yes, i play drums. Usually not comment on youtube or any kinda forums online but when i read that Jims right hand is "lazy" its just hard not to :) You should look into scottish drumming. Its very different from american dci style but still just as awsome.

First, I, too, am a percussionist of many different styles. This sort of playing fits with the style of music that he plays. Stop arguing and acting like you know everything about drums.

This technique is totally possible (and very effective! As it saves effort a big deal!) but its use on surfaces with less rebound is limited.

To us corps drummers, we probably think he's not good because of his flimsier & less play-through-the-drum hands. But for a pipe drummer, his technique is probably godly, which we obviously won't see through our eyes.

If I know absolutely nothing about rudimental percussion, how come I made a 1 at Texas state solo on a snare drum solo entitled "And the Kitchen Sink?" Hmm? You knock his sound quality and technique, comparing him to what are DCI champions. What you apparently don't realize is that his style of playing is completely different than DCI. So don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about, when a Texas state judge with a masters degree tells me otherwise...

Yes. Jim Kilpatrick is a waaaaaay better percussionist than Travis Barker. I'm not saying Travis isn't talented. Travis just lacks the technical expertise and cleaning sticking that separates performance art from the showtunes he's so famous for redubbing. Jim is a prodigy as well as a practiced musician. But Jim's level of quality and rhythm bests anything Travis could do.

He probably say the same about you...The so called skirt is a KILT and the people of Scotland pride themselves on their tradition. As so their drummers. You will notice that he does not dance and prance around looking like some over dressed chickens that I can think of....This guy is one of if not the best side drummer in the world.

Jim Kilpatrick cannot be compared to Emmanual Deleon, Casey, or any of the others in any way. Two different sides of the world, two different techniques and styles. @CrazeKillen Just to comment on your comment of a comment, he IS NOT the greatest snare drummer alive. Greatest pipe drummer alive, yes that could be true. (Same in my opinion.) But, he is not the greatest over all. To say so without mentioning the difference between this and corps style drumming, it makes you look like a tool. He is great, but to compare him to corps-style drumming is completely stupid. Sooooo....bye.
